Lakers don't even need to be an contender to draw though. They've been in the doldrums for 4 seasons now and still are tops in road attendance and still outdraw the Clippers in LA. They are and will forever be the glamour franchise of the league. A few lean years isn't going to change that. Boston was irrelevant for 20 years and nobody cared. The NBA needs the Lakers to get back to prominence. That's how everyone else eats.

"Need" is a strong term. I would say the league largely benefits from having the Knicks/Celtics/Lakers be good.
