Tf would we tank for? I only posted that because I find SI to be asinine. Same publication that thinks Noah and Rose aren't even top 100 players in the NBA.

eh, he kind of reminds me of kendall marshall. great amateur PG, but he just couldn't quite make an impact in the league.

If OKC kept Harden they would have got there.
Imagine if those guys started in a big market in NYC, they would have never been traded.
Golden State was built all of guys that they drafted. Steph, Klay, Draymond, Barnes, etc.
Spurs built through drafting.
Relying on free agency isn't a foolproof plan. It's pretty inept planning. No one is going to come to NY unless you have something in place that supports what is there. KD went to a place with a foundation that was built from drafting.
You win in free agency if you can convince LeBron to join you. Good luck on that.
Imagine if the Knicks tanked out now, got a bunch of young studs around KP and in a few years they have the cap space to make a run at Anthony Davis?
That is how you go after free agency. No one wants to play with over-the-hill Melo. His window as a lead dog on a Championship sailed long ago.

It's simple market economics. The best players generally coming in the top 5 picks. That's where you can get the players who will win you a chip.
Getitng as many of those is always the best plan.
Its no coincidence the Knicks have been horrible for 1 decade and a half and only had one top 5 pick during that time.
And what did that top 5 pick come out too?

described is what most GM's around the NBA would consider ideal. Seldomly will you ever see teams building purely from a "grassroots" perspective. I can think of maybe 2-3 teams that have built from the "ground up" and have had consistent success.
The NBA is built on a market economy, very much similar to America. But that doesn't necessarily mean you will always bat 1.000 if you've landed a top 5 pick. How many times have we seen guys get drafted later in the draft and have brought a significant contribution to their teams? Now, if you want to consider a market economy structured in a free-agency perspective; i think it's fair to say free agents demanding the highest form of pay will go to a team willing to meet that command. It's really a function of spending capability, but in most economic models we'll see that spending capability doesn't always equate to efficiency. Much to the chagrin of most, if not all NBA GM's
At the end of the day, this is a all a "crap shoot" and luck plays a MAJOR role in the model. You either get lucky and draft undervalued guys in the draft, keep them on your team and find a way to keep them together whole being successful (Golden State), or you get some role players and aim to catch the big fish in free agency (Miami Heat or Boston Celtics). There's really 2 ways to go about this.
At this point in our team's juncture, we don't have the luxury of choosing the former. But that doesn't mean we won't have that option available to us later down the road. Melo has a few years left and most of our signings are considered short-term and/or could be moved. We can easily push the reset button in a year or two and try the Grassroots approach.

i understand your logic... but this New York where we need instant results because the fans/media are too critical... and since melo wont waive his no trade clause because he wants to be here we cant speed up the rebuilding process... and since he is here why not try to win something instead of waste his prime away...

This is the most sensible thing to do. It's best to make due with what you have, rather than completely turning the ship around at the 11th hour.

Tanking means getting a bunch of d leaguers to fill out your roster not trading little contracts for big contracts or signing players past their primes to large contracts. Tanking should result in the loss of draft picks imo....

I don't understand. The NBA draft is based off a lottery system. It's not like they have an NFL draft system, where the team with the worst record automatically gets the 1st overall pick.
How often have we seen teams purposely tank in the NBA to be left short of getting the #1 pick?

But them that opens up a messy drawer of what constitutes as "tanking", because we know how people have say it's subjective. It's like saying someone is faking an automotive injury. How do you know if someone is in pain or not?
