- I thought of an international basketball championship tournament in which an American wasn’t the best player - the 1980 Moscow Olympics that the US boycotted. 
Seriously though, since we didn’t win Gold in the 88 Olympics, maybe there’s an argument someone from the Soviet Union was the best player in the tournament, but I don’t remember the games well enough to say for sure. Not since then though I don’t think.

You play for wherever you consider home to be unless you're not good enough to make the roster.
You think Andre blatche is played for the Philippines because he thinks that's his home? He wasn't born or raised there. No family from there either.
