So you're opinion there is zero advantage of speaking the native langue of a country you are doing marketing in?

Shea Webber became the captain of Montreal Canadians and improved his french skills so he could say some stuff in french at the introductory press conference.

why did he do that? was that a waste of time?

sure yes and the biggest talent in 100 years would be an even bigger deal if he could speak english. there is nothing xenophobic about this.

it's literally nothing like this.

Manny would be an even bigger star if he spoke English well.

its common knowledge
that fighters who can speak well, can command bigger audiences that their skills alone warrant.

Floyd Mayweather despite his boring fighting style used his ability to talk to promote his fights and generate and audience.

you know as well as I do that speaking well, and being a good interview helps you sell a fight.

thinking about the marketability of a sport solely within the United States is myopic.. major league sports are becoming more international. pigeonholing themselves to only the US fanbase precludes them from accessing revenue streams from larger countries. Yao Ming created a bridge between China and the NBA that now generates over $200 million a year (at least prior to Daryl Morey's comment). He didn't have to learn fluent English to make this happen.

also, the United States has no official language. English is just accepted as the de facto language. in 50 years, Shohei better learn Spanish to make baseball more marketable.

Don’t think it’s this way with the Angels yet, and I don’t have any data to back this up, but I’d estimate based personal experience/observations that there already as many Dodgers fans who speak Spanish as Dodger fans who don’t.

Do you really feel like SAS comments were xenophobic? A few years back I made comments about MLB players needing to speak English and then having to have translators leading to me thinking less of them. It was a blanket statement to all Latin born players and it was birthed from pure ignorance. It was something I was able to realize, not immediately but eventually and I did/do see the error in my thinking. There’s no excuse or explanation for my stance and comments back then other than, my own ignorance. It was one of the more stupid things I’ve said here or anywhere, but it doesn’t mean more than one thing, I was uneducated and insensitive and more or less an idiot In that instance. That whole situation allowed for growth, personal growth and understanding. Does that situation and those comments make me an awful person at a core level? Does it make the opinions of those who think that I am a **** person and a racist valid? There’s enough opinions to go around I’m sure. Does it give me a “those without Sin should cast the first stone” type of attitude? No. It does give me perspective on this ordeal, and though I don’t particularly care for SAS, I can read the room. Xenophobic wasn’t what came to mind.

At times we all act as if these talking heads or anybody with a voice/platform aren’t with Sin and can’t make mistakes, shouldn’t make mistakes, can’t make mistakes. Without mistakes there can be no growth. I believe that It’s what you do after you’ve ****ed up, that really shows who you are.

I don't know you, but this was dope of you to share.

I thought the same thing of the Racial Nichols situation (shout out to whoever came up with that name).

A lot of people in here, I wonder if they would have the same energy for their boss at work if their job found out some of the views they shared privately from work yet publicly online.

She said some dumb **** on 1 hand... but on the other hand, she has pushed for a lot of Black athletes to be featured on her show too.

And I'm not a Nichols fan. But we ALL have said dumb **** or at the very least have family members or close friends that do/did about other races.

best player in baseball speaks english and does nothing to promote the game

stupid take by screaming a smith

That clip about the Nigerian team :smh:

I really wish people would stop posting his videos in here lol this is the only place I ever come across screaming a smith content.

This is exactly why I said a few pages back to keep dude as far away from the Finals games as possible.

That Nigerian clip was wild condescending.

This is where the discussion at during the nba finals. What a time

Nice to see how NT has progressed from the days of holdentresvant handing out bans and suspensions to any anti-Laker member for "not staying on topic". >D

Said it before, but I really don't understand why a dead *** mlb topic is not a completely separate thread.

If I'm a basketball fan, why do I have to sift through a Stephen A Smith comment on BASEBALL during the NBA playoffs?

The NBA thread is basically the NT General of S&T?

Might as well discuss bitcoin and blockchain now. Smh

I think its important to state that Rachel wasnt simply making a dumb/ignorant comment. She was angling to undercut a peer based on those ignorant views.

Which reminds me since I've scrubbed my internet history of "Rachel Nichols Thick" searches...

Ol boy with Rachel was talking even more greasy. Bron ever handle that? 🤔

Last thing, I really only watch basketball these days. And even I tuned into the homerun derby as well as the ASG just to see Shohei.

It doesn't matter to me that he's not speaking english. Dude is NICE and I wanted to see a show.

He got eliminated in the 1st freaking round and I still kept watching (mainly because I'm a Mets fan and was also checking for Alonso).

So his ability to speak english had zero bearing on my choice to tune in.

Hearing "learn to speak english" almost comes off as "well go back to *insert foreign country here* if you don't like it here in the US!".

What's next? Don't speak english with the accent of the country you're originally from?

Wack

P.S. Good to see old heads like ska, CP, okb, pac, etc, etc still around.

Half of you couldn't stand me. And I couldn't stand half of you.

P.P.S. :wow: @ bricklayer being zo. No way. I think zo would have mentioned the Suns more than Kobe.

If there’s one lesson I’ve learned in my life, it’s never trust short, big titty Jewish women. I seen this coming from Rachel Nichols (ne Jacobs).

(This has nothing to do with being rejected (repeatedly) by my high school crush, who happened to be a 5’ Jewish girl with amazing boobs).

I feel that, but I really think people who are on TV everyday in a professional environment should know better. Yes, I’ve said dumb things, but would I say something, AT WORK, about someone only getting a job because of their race, or mocking their last name, or how someone does, or doesn’t, speak English well? Nah.

People, especially those with large platforms, should be held accountable. I’m sure they know better. Especially SAS who clearly preps for all his segments and still said that ignorant ****.

It's a long break between games and you guys are off-topic so let's get back to the NBA Finals.

NBA Finals history lesson:

In the 2020 NBA Finals, LeBron James shot 50% or better from the field in SIX (6) games. This means that he shot 50% or better in every game during this Finals.

In kobe bryant's NBA Finals career, he played THIRTY-SEVEN (37) games and shot 50% or better in FIVE (5) games.

This means that a 35-year-old LeBron James put up more 50%+ FG games in ONE (1) Finals series than the greatest brick-layer of them all put up in a combined SEVEN (7) Finals series.

LeBron James also took 1.5x as many 3-Pointers as kobe bryant and so he was taking more shots from further out on the floor.

i'll spare the folks who aren't interested in this topic so i'll just spoiler it:

appreciate the response and introspection. I don't think SAS is intentionally trying to offend and xenophobic, but his comments are a part this country's fascination of "othering" people that don't neatly fit into what it means to be "American." the tradition of xenophobia in the US is cooked into the subconscious of this country and comes in many forms, it doesn't have to be MAGA folks screaming to build a wall or some random karen yelling "go back to where you came from" to non-white folk. the belief that people need to the "speak English" is in the same vane, as it projects non-English speakers as being a part of the out-group. if you speak another language, it's unsavory and un-American.

it's like when the Texas leglislator, betty brown, said Asian people should adopt names that "are easier for americans to deal with." ...someone gonna break it to betty that Asian folk are also American?

for what it's worth, i do think that SAS' follow up response was sincere and a reflection of him taking accountability for his words. by no means do i believe that talking heads need to be perfect at all times or that they shouldn't make mistakes; however, given the platform and audience they have i'd say they have a greater responsibility to be more mindful of the messages they send. we saw what happens to this country when we have a president who is overtly and belligerently racist.

Does he have to learn english? No, not at all.

But it obviously woudnt hurt if he did. If im going to work in a foreign nation, its probably a good idea for me to pick up on the language a bit. Probably woudnt be necessary, but again its be helpful.

Problem really was just how SA said it.
