OFFICIAL COMIC BOOK THREAD

I've been totally fed up with Snyder :lol

If it wasn't for Detective I think I'd drop the Batman books.

I have dropped the Batman books for the most part. Only one i'm still following regularly is Nightwing. I still tune into Detective for the most part, but everything else i'm done with. Couldn't stand the main Batman title and All-Star fell off hard.

The first arc of ASB was meh, but I like this detective quest Bats has been going on currently. Freeze to Ivy to Mad Hatter. Detective is still one of my favorites. Love this current Orphan arc with Lady Shiva. Batwoman is the only other Bat family book I'm reading right now.

I just started Batwoman as well. Only 1 issue so can't say either way.

ASB has been flailing to me. It's going somewhere but it's like I almost fell in to another Snyder trap.

Marvel VP says fans don't seem interested in diversified/female characters

http://www.vulture.com/2017/04/marvel-sales-vp-fans-not-into-diversity-female-characters.html

Id say the thing is, while the readership is getting to be more diversified, the readers don't want to see people show horned into existing roles. For example Jane Thor or RiRi Iron man. If somebody is an Iron man fan, do you think they are going to take it in stride where he is temporarily replaced by a black girl etc. or is miles morales really going to pry away Spider-Man fans from Peter Parker?

They would be better off creating original characters that are diverse instead of just making female iron man/Thor, Asian hulk etc

Also maybe they could try and get those books into areas where for example a black teen could buy a Mile morales Spider-Man book.

I'll piggyback off of this, because it notes some of the things I feel about the situation. Sometimes I feel that the higher ups ignore the obvious in order to make these silly arguments. At the end of the day, execution is key. This guy takes the downturn in sales as proof that people have an issue with diverse characters in general, but that's not the case at all. Two prime examples of this are Miles Morales and Kamala Khan. Diversity is welcome and it can work, as evidenced by how warmly received both of those characters have been. What separates them from characters like Black Wally West or Amadeus Cho Hulk or Riri Williams? They don't see the predecessor being jettisoned or thrown under the bus to make way for the new kid. I've said it before, regardless of what happened to Ultimate Peter Parker, 616 Spider-Man was always still around doing his thing if you wanted stories of the OG Spider-Man. Regardless of what Sam Wilson is doing as Captain America, Steve Rogers is still heading his own title, with his own unique storylines. Regardless of what Kamala Khan does as Ms. Marvel, her book makes a real effort to connect to the original Ms. Marvel, who was also promoted to the role of Captain Marvel shortly before or around the same time that Kamala was showing up. These are all completely different than the ways that other characters have entered the fray.

Black Wally West just straight up replaced the original for no reason. The fact he was taking his name was probably the worst decision DC could have made. Amadeus Cho was actually very popular before he ever became a Hulk, with storylines that centered around his intelligence and ingenuity. Writers then went against what originally made him popular when they made him a Hulk, and killed Bruce Banner off shortly afterwards. Riri Williams is probably the best of the 3, but people don't want to see a bunch of Iron Men flying around, especially if one of them isn't Tony Stark. Riri's then got to compete with Doom in the role, who is still the super popular Dr. ******* Doom at the end of the day. They should have just made her the new War Machine if anything, though that also isn't set up well, since Rhodey was randomly killed off as part of that crappy Civil War 2 event. There are really a number of reasons as to why we've seen some of these new characters work, while others aren't working as well, but I believe it all comes down to the initial execution with which they're introduced to the readers.

I'd rather see a new female hero than a girl becoming wolverine let's say. Spider-Gwen works but that's like it.

Anyone pick-up X-Men Prime this week?

I'm beyond ready for the O5 to go back. Had enough of that. They'll probably stretch that story out though because the O5 are getting their own book still...

:{

I liked it but I feel the same way. Been saying they need to go back. Would love to see the Jim Lee era roster/teams back but of course with updated costumes. There is no denying that every since the movies have blown up, Marvel has bee putting more into the characters they own the rights to. It sucks for the X-Men franchise because its been suffering, and you can argue that without the popularity of the X-Men, maybe Marvel doesn't make it out of the 90's with all its money issues....

Am i the only one that thinks Marvel needs a "Rebirth" like event? DC restarted twice and it worked out well. Surprisingly well the second time.

Too many time displaced characters, too many Thor's running around, main X-men dead that shouldn't be, Captain America is evil and Iron Man is brain dead or whatever....

Just Start all over. Instead of doing all new #1's just go back to the original titles and numbering.

just finished "bloom" it was cool for me...picked up the first collection of rebirth as well...i'll give it a read on wednesday....

any of y'all up on batman rebirth...?

This whole weak *** bogus diversity should be "done right" by angry fans is just the same bull ****.

Iron Man and Cap have been being replaced multiple times since the 60s. If fans aren't use to this and know their heroes will come back then they're stupid. Enjoy the ******* ride.

As far as sales, this was a retailer event where Marvel met with them. For the past 18 months, a good deal of retailers have been saying they don't want this, refusing to sell or order it, directing customers to buy other ****, and treating certain customers in a particular way. Not all but a good deal where it's been noticed.

Now no doubt, the execution and stories have to be good but pretending there's no push back from retailers is crazy.

There's many problems with this happening a lot;

- The best creators are not willing to just give their creations to the big 2 profit off of. They'd rather lose the shared universe connection and go independent.

- Fans do not buy new characters en masse. Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan is the latest rare exception. Before her Deadpool was the last success which was like 30 years ago. No matter what fans say they're not gonna back it up with their cash. Wouldn't matter how much the publisher pushes the character.

Yup. I think we've both made this point before.

In 2016, in a post Image comics world no way established creators are giving away new ideas...

And as far as career company men like Slott, Bendis, Snyder, Johns (he does have incentive given his higher position), etc. they'll give new characters but it won't be their best work possible.

Johns and Bendis are the only ones making enough paper to justify it, I assume they might be able to get points on the package.

but even Snyder or Slott would have to think twice before they give up a great idea.

I don't know. I've seen more than a few people who are happy that Marvel's never done anything like Rebirth and has instead just stuck to their guns and done things their own way. The way I see it, DC's had some success with their route and Marvel's had some success with their. Both sides then have their fair share of strangeness or just outright terrible ideas sometimes. Though I will admit that Marvel's reaching the point where it seems like too much has been tossed aside that didn't need to be.

I heard Jim Starlin got a pretty nice royalty check for Anatoli Knyazev appearing in BVS. Which was the definition of a bit role.

Either short memories or their satisfaction making them ignore facts but the main reason DC had to do Rebirth is cuz they **** the bed with New52.

You'd have to go back to the 90s for a time Marvel **** the bed like that.

Its just a knee jerk reaction with some fans who are currently unhappy. Not a lot changed from before Egret Wars to after. Same kind of fans were saying Marvel should reboot when DC had increased sales with the New52.

People complain about all these #1 issues but what a whole continuity reboot? Nah. I'm good. Just do less company wide events that "Change the Universe" .

And yeah people don't support new characters. Its why your old favs get replaced with Legacy characters. No one buys Mosaic, Moon Girl, etc

Actually Moon Girl is huge with scholastic. It's just comic book stores that can't sell her to their customers.

This is another problem with the comic industry decisions from what I understand tend to get made purely on whats sells well via DIamond to comic stores and not what might sell well in book form or on digital.

As I understand it Ms Marvel doesn't exactly tare up the sales chart via diamond, but has a bigger following in digital and in trade.

and comic stores are not exactly welcoming places for a diverse audience of readers. Especially women.

That's the whole circular and insular nature of the comics industry.

No other medium has a built in buyer of their product the way comics has. Once they left news stands things changed.

Its cuz of that ppl think they know what they're talking about when get be in up comic sales or when they talk about working at a comic shop or knowing a retailer. Especially when the big 2 got in to digital and are back to exploring other avenues to profit.

Reading early X-Men on MU. As brilliant as Stan Lee was in creating these characters, he sho told some crazy *** stories.

I said it before but when I was younger I simply wasn't ready and in a different head space trying to read early Marvel comics.

A few years back I tried again and I was thoroughly enjoying Amazing Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, Fantastic 4, etc.
