On his DS2 track “I Serve the Base,” Future asserts, “Tryna make a pop star and they made a monster.” Now, it seems Hendrix is continuing his anti-radio friendly trend. In a new interview with Zane Lowe, the Atlanta rapper says his new album will have a more underground sound.
The Beats 1 Twitter account posted a preview of the interview today (Feb. 15). “I just feel like I want to go back to being a more underground [rapper],” Future tells Zane Lowe. “Just reconnecting with the fans, just more hands-on, being back with my fans.”
The full interview will be played Thursday (Feb. 16) on Apple Music. You can check out the preview below, along with another quote from Future and Lowe’s conversation. “I’ll always keep you guessing,” Future says. “I’m living up to the name. It’s powerful. That’s just what I do.”
In another audio clip from the forthcoming interview, Future says he doesn’t want to be attached to recent projects like What a Time to Be Alive and DS2 because he wants each new project to have its own identity. “This album might be tied into my first mixtape that I ever dropped or might be tied into my second mixtape so everybody can really understand visually and creatively where I can go with it when I make music. I’m not just doing it just to put songs out.”
Future’s new self-titled album is slated to drop on Friday, Feb. 17. Pre-orders are now available via iTunes for $11.99. The tracklist is still a mystery, but it’s a good bet the album will feature 17 tracks. The upcoming project is Future’s first body of work since his joint mixtape with DJ Esco, Project E.T.
The “March Madness” rapper is also set to go on tour with Migos, Kodak Black and Tory Lanez starting in May for their Nobody Safe Tour. Tickets are available to the general public on Friday, Feb. 17.
