The budget thing did creep into my mind a bit, but it didn't ruin the scene for me. When you first hear Drogon off in the distance... everyone freezing... then seeing the fire and him coming in.. that was just awesome.
Yeah, it would have been better if the show had a major Hollywood budget, but it doesn't so oh well. The budget on this show is already huge, and they do a lot of impressive stuff with the budget they have, so I can forgive that.
I shouldn't have been surprise since they heavily hinted at it, but they really killed Shireen like that. I shouldn't be surprised, from the first introduction of Stannis, it's been all about him believing in the Red Woman and the Lord of Light, so this is the price he pays. Either his men starve trying to make it to Winterfell.. or they make it and are defeated.. or they try to make it back to Castle Black. Or he makes this sacrifice.

I think Dany has a deep, almost telepathic connection with her dragons and Drogon sensed she was in dire straits.

I think DROGON ain't the ground warrior... His ground game weak, need to work on his cardio/stamina to keep his lighter fluid consistently to torch these bums...
