As Robert's Rebellion wrapped up, Ned got word that his sister Lyanna was at the Tower of Joy around Dorne. He went with like 6 or 7 people (one of which is Howland Reed, Jojen and Meera's father). They fought off 3 members of the Kingsguard, including the legendary Arthur Dayne, one of Jaime's heros growing up. Ned's side won but only he and Howland were left alive. They went into the Tower and found Lyanna dying in a pool of blood. She made Ned promise something. A lot of people think that this promise is important in the story.

Janos was part of Ned's arrest at King's Landing and was there at the execution. In the books, when Jon is giving him orders and Janos keeps refusing, he keeps thinking about Ned and his lessons. He killed him not only for failing to follow orders but also as a bit of payback.
