OFFICIAL NEW YORK KNICKS OFFSEASON THREAD: TRAINING CAMP

I thought Utah owns our 2009 pick, but it looks like they just own 2010.

Looking back at all the things the Knicks has gone through during the last decade, it's just one big dark era.

I just hope to everything that is good, we need up with Derrick Rose. Donnie Walsh likes him as well, and I think if we had the chance to draft him, Walshwould do so without any doubt.

Lebron is going to play for the Nets in 2010. No matter what Donnie Walsh does, or how much money we throw at Lebron, Jay-Z is on his shlong so hard thatLebron wont even consider going to the Knicks.

This is how the Nets will be looking by 2010
KNICKS' NEW BOSS: MARBURY A 'KEY PLAYER'

By MARC BERMAN
article_storybottom.gif

April 4, 2008 -- NEW ORLEANS - Stephon Marbury Stephon Marbury sounded like he was doing cartwheels yesterday as he praised owner James Dolan for hiring DonnieWalsh as president and removing Isiah Thomas from power. Marbury now likely will outlast his feuding partner.

The rehabbing Marbury, who is not traveling with the club, told The Post by phone that Walsh brings three things Thomas did not bring - a New York sensibility,a vast amount of managerial experience and the truth.

Marbury also knows Walsh's presence means he has a legitimate chance of remaining with the club next season in the final year of his contract, with Thomason the verge of getting the boot from the bench after the season.

"I think the hiring of Donnie Walsh is a great move for Mr. Dolan as far as bringing in someone with his experience," Marbury said. "Heunderstands New York being from New York. This is his bloodline. It's a great situation having new blood come in.

"Bringing in someone who's proven himself over a 25-year period is just going to allow everyone to see his pedigree. He's a guy who knowsbasketball, understands basketball and the best part of it he's from New York. He understands what the fans want."

Marbury said Thomas, who will coach tonight in New Orleans, wasn't straight with the fans. Marbury believes his Knicks New York Knicks stint was hurtbecause Thomas, a Chicago native, didn't get the Big Apple, complaining too much about the Garden booing.

"The fans have a right to feel how they feel," Marbury said of their distaste for Thomas. "Our fans aren't ignorant. They're smart. Youcan't tell them one thing and do another thing. Be truthful to them. You can't lie to our fans. If you play bad, don't blame it on someoneelse."

In his press conference Wednesday, Walsh not only said he wanted to meet with Thomas, but also that he wanted to air it out with Marbury, too, and find outwhat happened between him and Thomas this season.

Walsh is taking it slow, though. He spent yesterday in the Knicks' offices, meeting front-office employees, but today is returning to Indiana for severaldays.

According to a team source, Walsh will have his showdown meeting with Thomas on Wednesday at the earliest. Walsh plans to attend his first Knicks game as teampresident Wednesday against Charlotte. Walsh still doesn't have his own office at the Garden.

Had Thomas remained in power, Marbury likely would have been bought out. Walsh said he still considers Marbury a key piece to next season. He's reluctantto sign a free agent point guard and give him a long-term deal with the Knicks eyeing getting under the cap after 2010 for LeBron James' free agency.

"I really want to sit down with [Marbury] at some point," Walsh said. "I know he was injured. I know about what happened earlier in the season.I do want to sit down and know what the issues are because he's a good player. I don't know where Marbury is and he's a key player."

The feud between Thomas and Marbury that came to a head in Phoenix in November set an awful tone. Thomas tried to remove Marbury from the starting lineup afterfive games with the team at 2-3. Ironically, Thomas has repeatedly blamed the season's failures on Marbury playing in just 24 games, even though he triedto remove him.

"I obviously wasn't in Isiah's plans," Marbury said. "He talked about the guards going to be here next year. Maybe I'll be inDonnie's plans. If not, it will bother me not to play basketball here. I feel I got something to prove. I feel like I'm motivated in a different aspectafter what I went through this year. I don't want to play anywhere else. I feel I have five years left at a high level. I'm 31, not 40."

*

Thomas confirmed the Post's report that, whether Walsh was in power or not, the club's chief goal is to make an attempt to get under the cap for 2010when the Cavaliers' James is free.

"I think we understand 2010 is an important year and we've all been targeting that year," Thomas said.

Mark Jackson emerging as favorite to replace Isiah Thomas

BY FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Donnie Walsh has the keys to the franchise and is about to face the toughest challenge of his professional career. Over the coming weeks and months, the newKnicks president will evaluate every member of the organization - players, coaches, support staff - and make some difficult decisions about who stays and whogoes.

Removing Isiah Thomas as coach is one of the easiest moves Walsh will make. Finding a replacement will not be as simple. Former Knick Mark Jackson is emergingas a favorite to succeed Thomas. Jackson has no previous head coaching experience, but Walsh did give Larry Bird and Thomas their first head coaching jobs.

However, there is some sentiment that Walsh may look to hire Jackson as his general manager, according to a source close to Walsh. Last year, Jacksoninterviewed for the GM job with the Memphis Grizzlies.

If Jackson - who had two stints as a player on Walsh's Pacer teams - joins Walsh in the front office, there are several coaching candidates that couldappeal to them. Walsh admires Scott Skiles, an experienced coach who could achieve Walsh's first goal: making the Knicks competitive every night.

Another name that cannot be ruled out is Louisville's Rick Pitino, the former Knicks coach. Jackson considers Pitino the best coach he played for and thetwo have remained close throughout the years. Whether Pitino would leave college and return to the NBA for a third time is not known. The fact that Pitinowould be answering to both Jackson and Walsh might also keep him from taking the job.

Walsh will allow his head coach to hire his own staff but Walsh will make suggestions. It is believed that former Bucks coach Brian Winters, Pacers scout JimmyPowell and Spurs assistant coach George Felton - all three native New Yorkers - could end up with the Knicks in some capacity.

Walsh says he is also willing to embrace the Knicks' past but that he isn't about to give "every Tom, !@%# and Harry" a job. However, a newadministration would open the door for Patrick Ewing to return as an assistant coach.

Three current assistant coaches - Brendan Suhr, Mark Aguirre and George Glymph - were hired by Thomas. Dave Hanners was brought in by Larry Brown, and HerbWilliams was retained from Don Chaney's staff, while strength and conditioning coach Greg Brittenham originally was hired by Pat Riley. Walsh willdetermine the futures of those assistants as well as the fates of GM Glen Grunwald, the scouts, training staff and media-relations officials.

^^man im lovin Walsh 2 great articles

i agree we need to keep Stephon at all costs i dont care who we get (bsides obvious players like Kobe, Bron, etc.) We need to keep Stephon on this team. WENEED HISS $22 MIL OFF NEXT SUMMER!! and maybe you know maybe the new look Knicks will bring out the old Stephon and he can have a good year next year and makemoney elsewhere during the summer. As you know im a big Marbury fan and i feel bad for him because i believe we $%*+@% him up, i wish him the best but we needRose and therefore next year will be his last year as a Knick but we need him for next season.

and yall know how i feel about Mark Jackson
