Every time I see us giving QB's in the past the benefit of the doubt due to it being a different league, not saying it isn't warranted, but I always think about what Seattle's defense is doing. We should give them the benefit of the doubt then.

Are they solidified as the greatest defense of all time?

This is the major cause for a lot of the Russ backlash.

Seattle's defense is LEGENDARY. As in, LEGENDARY.

They have allowed the fewest points in the league, 3 straight years. During the biggest offensive explosion in NFL history, that's what their defense has done.


The last team to manage that, the 70's Steelers, in a non offensive explosive era.

Absurd what the Seattle defense is doing. Flat out, absurd.

Some people look at a game on TV and say oh they rushing 3 or 4 guys and think.."oh they are playing a simple scheme" Not realizing there's 5-7 guys you cant see

Like there's no combo coverages, read coverages, brackets, rat coverages, coverages based on sets, peels, green dogs, blitzing to sets

They weren't doing that in 1984, there was no need to. Teams just lined mostly in 21 personnel and wanted establish the run

The game evolved with more passing offenses, so defenses had to get more complex

So "comnplex" and "tricky" is all code word now for soft, flag football style of play in which some QB's don't even need to shower after games, and receivers can run thru the middle of the field with ease.

But hey, stay on with the 80's defense was plain and simple narrative, I like it.

Yes in the original post I said there was pro and cons to any NFL era

In the 1980s guys could play more physical, I remember watching a pass rushing tape from the late 1990s and the hits, defenders were allowed to put on quarterbacks were insane by today's standard

But you have to remember guys weren't as big and fast in the 1980s as they are in the today's NFL.

Marinos 1984 season was great and should be respected but to act like you could put Marinos in today's NFL and that he would improve much his own 1984 numbers is disingenuous.

Theres a point of diminishing returns and also how his strengths would translate into today's era

Marinos strengths in 1984 were that he had all time great passing skills and he played in a innovative offense that defenses weren't accustomed to

Marino's weakness were that he believed in his arm too much, wasn't very cerebral and he wasn't mobile

I could see his weakness in today's NFL preventing him from surpassing his 1984 stats in terms of being efficient

Marino would be great in today's NFL though

Seattle's defense is legendary. Best I've seen.

They allowed 6.5 points per game over the last six weeks of the season. :x

once Bobby Wagner came back they kicked it to another level...
