This is what I was talking about:

Adducul shipped to Purefoods

Thursday, May 31, 2007
Page: 1
Rommel Adducul has landed with Purefoods Chunkee Giants after a two-day layover with Red Bull.

Adducul ended up with the Giants following the completion of a three-way trade deal among Red Bull, San Miguel Beer and Purefoods.

Purefoods got Adducul in exchange for Don Camaso after Red Bull earlier acquired him from San Miguel in a surprise deal for Enrico Villanueva.

The PBA Commissioners Office is expected to receive the trade paper any time which league observers deemed one-sided for the SMC group.

However, Red Bull officials maintained they just wanted the best for their players who no longer wanted to play for the Bulls.

Apparently, Villanueva had been asking to be traded as early as last season.

Red Bull cited insubordination in delisting Villanueva from the Restricted Trade List, paving the way for his transfer to San Miguel. Under the restricted list, Villanueva could be traded only to Danny Seigle at San Miguel.

Some quarters said there could be monetary consideration involved in the package despite San Miguel and Purefoods gaining marquee players while Red Bull settled for a third-string guard in Camaso.

But Red Bull officials said they are indeed interested on Camaso, who played for the team back in the PBL.

Purefoods is excited over the entry of Adducul.

Kerby Raymundo, for one, had said hes had long wanted to have a dependable partner to ease the load at the paint.

Ive been playing 4 or 5 and defending against imports and Ive wanted to have a reliable reliever, Raymundo said.

But I was wrong. He did not wear a Red Bull jersey, even for a just single game. Although, PBA graphics had him wearing one.

JAMES YAP ON FIRE, LIFTS PUREFOODS TO WILDCARD
League MVP scores career-high 41 as Giants eliminate Dragons

ed. And we're confident we'll find a way to get to the next level," he added.

Chandler tallied 23 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and missed a triple double by two assists. Peter June Simon, who was celebrating his 27th birthday, scored 16 points and Noy Castillo added 10 for the Giants, who won for just the second time in their last seven games.

The Dragons hoping to force a playoff for the last wildcard spot, did the best they could but couldn't get the break.

The expansion ballclub finished the conference with a 4-14 mark in the elims and 7-29 for the season.

Welcoat shot 47 percent from the field, slightly better than Purefoods 44 percent. But the Giants were steadier from the line hitting 18-of-25 attempts while the Dragons struggled with 8-for-23.

But it was Purefoods' three-point shooting that broke the backbone of the Dragons. The Giants went 11-for-30 from beyond the arc with James Yap going 6-for-14.

Overall, James Yap went 15-of-31 while scoring 28 of his points in the second half. His 3-pointer midway in the third quarter gave Purefoods a 65-38 bulge, the biggest lead in the game.

Wayland White scored 29 points and had 11 rebounds while Alex Compton added 19 for Welcoat, which made just 9-of-25 from 3-point range in what turned out to be the Dragons farewell performance for the season.

The scores:

Purefoods 109 Yap J. 41, Chandler 23, Simon 16, Castillo 10, Yap R. 8, Evangelista 8, Yee 2, Adducul 1, Pingris 1.

Welcoat 97 White 29, Compton 19, Wainwright 16, Cabatu 13, Baguion 7, Gelig 5, Reyes 4, Lopez 2, Sta. Maria 2, Lao 0.
Quarterscores: 25-14, 48-31, 75-57, 109-97.

ALASKA KNOCKING ON SEMIS DOOR WITH WIN OVER SLR
Aces can crash into Final 4 outright if SMB, Air21 win Sunday

Friday, 01 June 2007

ANTIPOLO Rosell Ellis came back from a one-game layoff to give Alaska a good ride as the Aces repulsed the Sta. Lucia Realtors, 99-93, for a guaranteed playoff crack at an outright semis berth in the 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference at the Ynares Center here Friday night.

Ellis, who sat out their last game due to a pulled hamstring, came out with a renewed energy, logging in 28 points, 15 rebounds and six assists to help the Aces close out their elims stint with a 12-6 win-loss card.

Alaska finishes second behind Red Bull and gains automatic entry into the semis should Talk N Text and Barangay Ginebra lose to San Miguel Beer and Air21, respectively, at the conclusion of the double-round eliminations Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

A win by either Talk N Text or Ginebra necessitates a playoff for the second outright semis seat involving the Aces.

A three-way tie for second among Alaska, TNT and Ginebra ensues if both the Pals and the Kings triumph.

In this case, Ginebra, with the inferior quotient, automatically settles for a quarterfinals berth while Alaska and Talk N Text slug it out in a playoff to decide which team joins Red Bull in an early passage into the semis.

"Im sure youd ask me which team I prefer to play in a playoff. Id rather play nobody," said Alaska coach Tim Cone in the post-game interview.

Sta. Lucia wound up with a 5-13 card but still made it to the wildcard round with the help of Purefoods, which booted out Welcoat earlier in the day.

Though assured of a wildcard berth, the Realtors put up a brave front but floundered at the finish with import Jamaal Williams getting into foul-trouble situation.

The Aces made a decisive run with Williams riding the bench, putting the game away from the Realtors at 92-83.

"We knew its not going to be a walk in the park. (Sta. Lucia coach) Boyet (Fernandez) is trying to build the character of his team and hes doing a pretty good job," said Cone.

"Sta. Lucia has been improving. Dennis Espino and Marlou Aquino stepped up. Theyre not scoring much but they were such big threats out there," Cone added.

It was really a battle until the Aces got a big break with the Realtors forced to sit down Williams after picking up his fifth foul with 8:50 left to play.

Ahead by only one at 79-78, Alaska was already enjoying a nine-point cushion at 92-83 by the time the Sta. Lucia import returned to the floor.

Sonny Thoss, Willie Miller and Jeffrey Cariaso also put in significant numbers for the Aces.

Inspired by the news of his possible stint with the RP team in the FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifier in Japan, Miller churned out 13 points, eight assists and three rebounds.

"Jackpot kapag nag-champion kami tapos mapasama ako sa national team," said Miller.

Kelly Williams, another player being eyed for the Japan joust, went 7-of-8 from the three-point area and led the Realtors with 27 points and five rebounds.

The scores:

Alaska 99 Ellis 28, Thoss 26, Miller 13, Cariaso 11, Belasco 9, Ferriols 4, Cortez 4, Laure 2, Juinio 2, Hugnatan 0.

Sta. Lucia 93 Williams K. 27, Williams J. 22, Omolon 14, Aquino 8, Miranda 6, Espino 6, Gonzales 5, Mendoza 3, Isip 2, Bughao 0, Catli 0.

Quarterscores: 27-25, 48-45, 72-70, 99-93.

RAINY SEASON ON BUT BAGUIO STILL HOT
Player of the Week May 28 to June 3
2007-05-30_cbaguio.jpg

It's hardly surprising that splendid individual performances came aplenty with ballclubs frantically making their final push in the homestretch of the Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference double-round eliminations.

Collectively, the Red Bull Barakos stood out as they won their final four games to emerge the No. 1 team and grab the first outright entry into the semifinal round.

Individually this past week, James Yap, Sonny Thoss, Ronald Tubid and Cyrus Baguio excelled on their productive games keying their respective teams' crucial victories.

In what had become a close four-way fight, Baguio edged Yap, Thoss and Tubid for the PBA Press Corps' ACCEL-Talk N Text Player of the Week honors for the period May 28-June 3.

It's the second time Baguio emerged Player of the Week this season after winning the same accolade before the Holy Week break.

But Baguio shone brighter this time, coming through with 26 points, six assists and two rebounds to lead the Barakos to a 105-103 victory over the Coca-Cola Tigers that secured their outright passage into the semis.

The 26-point output was a career second best for this 2004 slam dunk king who has decided for himself to step up even more on the departure of Enrico Villanueva.

Baguio, a native of Iligan City and a former UST standout, has been up to the task so far, averaging 15.5 points since Villanueva's exit.

"Kailangang mag-trabaho ng husto malaking kawalan si Rico," said Baguio.

Curiously, Baguio and his teammates have made their longest streak in the conference minus Villanueva who earlier joined the RP team in the SEABA joust in Rachaburi, Thailand then found himself being dealt to San Miguel Beer in what turned out to be a three-way trade with Purefoods which also involved Romel Adducul and Don Camaso.

"Cyrus has really matured as a player. He's been working very hard to improve his skills, and his attitude, knowledge and passion for the game is worth mentioning," said coach Yeng Guiao.

The 26 was Baguios highest output since scoring a career-best 27 in a 124-111 loss to Talk N Text last February 9 in the one-game battle for third place in the Philippine Cup

Yap scored a career-high 41 points against Welcoat, Thoss made a career-best 26 against Sta. Lucia and Tubid matched his career-high 30 versus Air21 as they were also considered for the Player of the Week honors.

TNT SURVIVES ENDGAME SCARE FROM AIR21, ADVANCES TO FINAL 4
Big Mac Cardona erupts for career-high 31 to lead Phone Pals
2007-06-17_cardona_0126.jpg
on Wednesday also at the Big Dome.

I hope we learned something from this series, said Pumaren, anticipating another tough series against the Barakos.

TNT appeared to be closing the series trouble-free following a basket by Egay Billiones that gave the team a 101-80 advantage with 7:41 remaining.

That gave the Phone Pals more than enough reason to rejoice and lose their attention in the game.

Before they knew it, the Express, who refused to go away, had made their way back into the game behind Mark Telan and Shawn Daniels, who combined for 26 points in that final period. The Phone Pals combined for only 25 in that same quarter.

A 3-pointer and a three-point play by Cardona kept the charging Express at bay before Daniels, who scored 15 of his PBA career-best 34 points in the fourth quarter, scored on a layup that pulled the Air21 to within 108-109 with 52 second to go.

JJ Sullinger, who was practically unheard of in the fourth quarter, made his presence felt by knocking in a 3-pointer that made it 112-108 and virtually broke the backbone of the Express.

JJ momentarily disappeared in the fourth but that 3-point shot gave us a cushion when we needed it, Pumaren said.

Sullinger finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds, Anthony Washington added 21 and Don Allado had 12 for the Phone Pals, who gave away 35 points on 24 turnovers, 12 of those they committed in the fourth.

Nino Canaleta scored 22 points and Telan and Wynne Arboleda had 14 apiece for the Express, who didnt seem to have the energy and didnt show any urgency in the first half.

Air21 had a chance to force overtime or even win the game after Washington split his free throws for a 114-112 lead with 8.7 seconds left.

But Jimwell Torion, who took the inbound, threw away the ball with long pass that was beyond the reach of Telan, who was streaking downcourt.

With the loss, the Express finish the season with an even 22-22 record, matching the 0.500 percentage last season that saw them finishing with 26-26 mark.

The scores:

Talk N Text 114 Cardona 31, Sullinger 23, Washington 21, Allado 14, Carey 12, Billones 5, Belano 4, Fran 2, de Ocampo Y. 2.

Air21 112 Daniels 34, Canaleta 22, Telan 14, Arboleda 14, Torion 11, Santos 10, Se 7, Marquez 0, Andaya 0, Dimaunahan 0.
Quarterscores: 28-22, 53-40, 89-73, 114-112.

RED BULL, ALASKA BACK IN ACTION AS FINAL 4 BLASTS OFF
Talk N Text, San Miguel ready to do battle
, was Alaska's import a few years back and would have been the Aces' reinforcement this conference instead of Ellis but passed up on the offer to pursue an opportunity in the NBA that didn't work out well.

"Me and Ro had a lot of battles in the U.S. So this series should be a dogfight," declared Young, who had 17 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and two blocks on Sunday as the SMB eliminated Barangay Ginebra from the playoffs and clinched the last semifinal berth with a 117-114 victory in overtime.

SMB coach Siot Tanquingcen agrees and said the Beermen's ability to defend will determine their fate in the series

NO RUST FOR ALASKA AS ACES TAKE GAME 1
Young's triple double goes for naught
in the series.

The Beermen missed a total of four attempts and committed one error in that stretch.

Earlier, the Beermen unraveled a 21-7 tear to erase a 12-point deficit and surge ahead at 96-94 with still four minutes left to play.

But the Aces refused to totally crack up, going to Ellis and Sonny Thoss as they stayed in the thick of the fight then regained the lead to stay at 100-99 on a semi-hook by Ellis of Young.

Ellis led all scorers with 28 points while also coming through with 15 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks in 42 solid minutes of action.

Thoss added 19, Jeffrey Cariaso 14 and Nic Belasco 12. Willie Miller struggled for only five points in 33 minutes of play.

"San Miguel did a good job keeping Willie out of his comfort zone. We have to figure out to solve it. We cant afford Willie checked throughout this series," said Cone.

The scores:

Alaska 100 -- Ellis 28, Thoss 19, Cariaso 14, Belasco 12, Laure 7, Cortez 7, Ferriols 6, Miller 5, Juinio 2, Hugnatan 0.

San Miguel 99 -- Young 27, Wilson 13, Villanueva 12, Ildefonso 10, Tenorio 9, Calaguio 8, Pena 8, Racela 7, Gonzales 5, Adriano 0.

Quarterscores: 25-28, 52-44, 84-73, 100-99

ROUND 1 TO RED BULL
Penny, Fonacier-led Barakos take best-of-7 semis opener vs. TNT
the third quarter but they needed Fonaciers clutch shooting when the Phone Pals threatened one last time with 5:47 remaining.

Jay Washington scored 19 points, including 12 straight that pulled the Phone Pals within 86-87.

But Fonacier, who spent most of the first half on the bench, knocked in successive jumpers to key an 18-13 that would keep the Phone Pals at bay. He closed that flurry with a running layup, then made two free throws before breaking the heart of the Phone Pals by knocking a huge three that made the count 105-99 with 44 seconds to go.

Most of the time Larry finishes the game for us. I guess he proved that decision is well deserved, Guiao said.

Fonacier , who played for just 13 minutes, finished with 14 points -- 11 coming in the fourth -- had two rebounds, one assist and one steal.

The Barakos, who showed signs of rustiness due to the two-week break after topping the eliminations which earned them an outright Finals berth, appeared in trouble in the second quarter as the Phone Pals opened the period with 12-0 run to build a 34-19 advantage.

But Penny kept Red Bull in the game with strong moves in the lane before Leo Najorda, who finished with 12 points, and Cyrus Baguio, who had 13 points, teamed up with their hardworking import so that by halftime TNTs lead was trimmed to just 45-44.

When we pulled within one point at halftime I knew we can pull this one, said Guiao.

J.J. Sullinger led all scorers with 27 points but his inability to control the game didnt help the Phone Pals.

The scores:

Red Bull 107 Penny 26, Fonacier 14, Baguio 13, Najorda 12, Valenzuela 9, Alvarez 8, Robinson 7, Hrabak 7, Sharma 4, Ybanez 3, Bugia 2, Cruz 2, Camaso 0.

Talk N Text 101 Sullinger 27, Washington 19, Cardona 15, Allado 15, Carey 10, Billones 8, de Ocampo Y. 5, Belano 2, Fran 0.
Quarterscores: 19-22, 44-45, 75-72, 107-101

CARDONA VIRTUALLY UNSTOPPABLE ANEW AS TNT TAKES 2-1 LEAD
28 points for Captain Hook and a career-high 10 rebounds
2007-06-24_CARDONA_0902.jpg

Mark Cardona led Talk N Texts third quarter assault with 11 points as the Phone Pals went on to dominate the Red Bull Barakos in Game 3, 106-98, Sunday night for a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven semifinal series in the Talk N Text-PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

Game 3 was surprisingly easy for the Phone Pals, who are hoping to bury the ghost of losing 2-1 leads, the most recent in last conference's Philippine Cup semifinal series against the Barangay Ginebra Kings. TNT also held a 2-1 lead at the time but lost the next three games and the series.

The Phone Pals have actually lost their last three best-of-7 series, 2 of them in the Finals, after taking a 2-1 lead.

Talk N Text separated from Red Bull after a close first half as the Barakos experienced an offensive meltdown in the third quarter that saw them shooting a horrendous 21 percent (4-of-19) from the field, including 1-9 from the three-point range.

That turned out to be the break the Phone Pals had been waiting for, outscoring the Barakos, 34-14, with Cardona leading the way in that telling charge that propelled them to leads of as much as 17 points in that period.

We really wanted to take the lead and the players made things happen in the second half. They shot well and made key stops that I though frustrated Red Bull, said TNT coach Derick Pumaren.

But theres nothing to celebrate. Were also in this position last conference only to be beaten three straight games by Ginebra. I hope that wont happen again, Pumaren added.

Game 4 of the best-of-seven series is set Wednesday also at the Big Dome while Game 5 will be held at the Cuneta Astrodome on Friday.

J.J. Sullinger led all scorers with 31 points and had 12 rebounds while Cardona tallied 28 points and cornered career-high 10 boards for the Phone Pals, who outrebounded the Barakos, 55-45.

It was also the first double-double performance for Cardona in the league.

The Phone Pals performed so well in Game 3, resulting in Pumaren getting to rotate his players with ease and without any dip in intensity. Seven of nine players Pumaren fielded saw action for 20 plus minutes or more and each of them contributes at least six points and two rebounds apiece.

The Barakos were in the thick of things only in the early going but lost momentum after their key players Junthy Valenzuela, James Penny and Cyrus Baguio went into foul trouble.

Valenzuela, who showed the way for Red Bull with 22 points, picked up four fouls after just two quarters while Penny who had 15 points and 11 rebounds -- had three at halftime. Baguio, who added 10 points, picked up his third foul early in the third.

With the three spending more time on the bench, Red Bulls offense considerably deteriorated as nobody managed to pick up the slack.

But Pumaren is wary of the Barakos capability to bounce back in the series.

We cant be too complacent. Red Bull has the ability to turn things around when their backs are on the wall. So we have to keep our focus, Pumaren said.

The scores:

Talk N Text 106 Sullinger 31, Cardona 28, Washington 15, Carey 10, Belano 8, Billones 6, Allado 6, de Ocampo Y 2, Fran 0.

Red Bull 98 Valenzuela 22, Najorda 16, Penny 15, Baguio 10, Hrabak 10, Fonacier 7, Ybanez 5, Bugia 4, Cruz 3, Alvarez 2, Robinson 2, Camaso 2, Sharma 0.
Quarterscores: 24-31, 52-54, 86-68, 106-98.

SMB FINALLY GETS ONE OVER ALASKA
Tenorio, Ildefonso come off the bench to lead Beermen
San Miguel Beer is again back in business.

Forty-eight hours after being utterly outclassed by the Alaska Aces, the Beermen got back fighting with great resolve Sunday night and avoided falling into a 0-3 hole no team in PBA playoff history has ever gotten out of.

San Miguel Beer played a well-balanced game with Danny Ildefonso and LA Tenorio delivering huge numbers coming off the bench as the Beermen drubbed the Aces, 91-81, in Game Three of their 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference best-of-seven semifinals series at the Araneta Coliseum.

"At least, weve got one. The key was making it sure we do things correctly. Its tough to beat Alaska if you commit many mistakes. Theyre scrappy and good at the same time," said coach Siot Tanquingcen as his troops narrowed down the Aces lead in the series at 2-1.

"Its hard to hold them down. Theyre big and strong. We have to battle and dont let them outhustle us," Tanquingcen added.

The Beermen did all those things Sunday to get back in the thick of things in the season-ending tourney where they have become the "Miracle Team."

Galen Young led all players in scoring and rebounds with 22 points and 12 caroms with Ildefonso and Tenorio adding 18 and 16 points, respectively, although playing limited minutes this time.

"It showed that we dont necessarily need one or two guys playing big. We need a total team effort," said Tanquingcen.

Ildefonso and Tenorio proved themselves to be ideal subs, supplying the team instant offense coming off the bench.

And saving their best for last, Ildefonso and Tenorio, more importantly, delivered lethal blows on the Aces at the finish.

The two combined for 16 of the Beermens 28 points in the final quarter with a triple by Tenorio breaking Alaskas back at 89-81 with time down to 1:11.

But it was a fierce battle until the Beermen got that margin.

Willie Miller, who had his breakthrough game in the series Friday, titillated the crowd with back-to-back three-pointers as the Aces came within two at 77-79.

But after Ildefonso answered with a short stab, Miller had their fans moaning and groaning as he tried another three-pointer that didnt hit the rim then let Brandon Cablay complete a three-point play in transition on a useless foul.

Alaska used a nine-point lead to cushion the impact of San Miguels strong second-quarter finish as the Aces took the half at 42-41.

The Aces led by nine at 40-31 before the Beermen made a 10-2 run to close the first 24 minutes of play.

The Beermen sustained their charge in the third quarter and surged ahead by eight at 54-46 before settling for a 63-61 edge going into the final canto.

The scores:

San Miguel Beer 91 Young 22, Ildefonso 18, Tenorio 16, Cablay 10, Gonzales 7, Villanueva 7, Calaguio 5, Wilson 4, Racela 2, Pena 0.

Alaska 81 Cortez 14, Ellis 14, Miller 12, Belasco 9, Thoss 8, Hugnatan 8, Ferriols 8, Cariaso 6, Laure 2.

Quarterscores: 19-24, 41-42, 63-61, 91-81
