Webb, Big J top picks for post
By Nelson Beltran
Saturday, August 11, 2007

Two former senators loomed as frontrunners in the search for the PBAs officer-in-charge (OIC) and full-time commissioner.

Freddie Webb, a former player, coach, city councilor, congressman and senator whose passion for sports never wavers, has appeared a cinch to become the officer-in-charge taking over the job left by resigned PBA commissioner Noli Eala.

But sources said that Robert Jaworski, another former senator known as the PBAs Living Legend for being the face of the league in the 70s and early 80s , enjoys tremendous support from the board to become the pro loops full-time commissioner.

Webb is reportedly assured of seven votes as the PBA board of governors meets Monday to name the man who will be entrusted the job of running the daily affairs of the premier league.

Four other personalities in former PBA executive director Sonny Barrios, UAAP commissioner Ed Cordero, womens national coach Fritz Gaston and corporate man Lambert Ramos made it to the short list of candidates for the job.

Webb, an Olympian and former YCO player who also called the shots for Shell, said he welcomes the chance to make the league stronger.

He has good quality and great stature. He has so much experience being a former athlete who dabbled into entertainment and politics and had as much success as a sportsman. He also has good public relations, said one governor.

The mans ready for the job. He can make great decisions, said another governor.

Incoming board chair vice chairman Joaqui Trillo, whose team Alaska is to host the board meeting Monday at New World Hotel in Makati, expects the selection of the OIC to be a short process.

The board has said the OIC will serve on an interim capacity but may be tapped as the permanent commissioner depending on his performance on the transition period.

I know Ill do well, Webb has told The STAR, Itll be a challenge for me and I like challenges. My position is without the public, the PBA is nothing so Ill do what I can to keep public interest always on a high note.

After naming the OIC, incoming board chair Tony Chua said they will form a special committee to work on the search for the permanent commissioner.

While Webb appeared a shoo-in to be the IOC, Jaworski is being considered as candidate to hold the rein in the league for the long haul.

A source said Jaworskis long-time association with the league and stature as one of pro loops big stars in the past could work in his favor.

He was among the first PBA players to endorse commercial brands so he had proven marketing skills. He has tested managerial skills, too, being a long-time player-coach in the PBA and former senator so we really think theres nobody better fit for the job as new commissioner, he added.

Jaworski, who has a standing offer to coach the Air21 Express, is to return from the United States Wednesday.

Coke trades Yeo to Sta. Lucia
By Nelson Beltran
Monday, September 10, 2007

Coca-Cola dealt yesterday former La Salle star Joseph Yeo to Sta. Lucia Realty in exchange for ex-FEU standouts Cesar Catli and Mark Isip.

The two teams consummated the deal, which also involved a Coca-Cola future draft pick, in time for their clash in the 2007 PBA pre-season tourney tomorrow at 6 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan.

It could well be a win-win trade deal as the Tigers have now beefed up their frontcourt on their acquisition of Isip and Catli, who will replace outside gunner William Antonio.

The Realtors, on the other hand, see an able slasher in Yeo following the transfer of Kenneth Duremdes also to Coca-Cola last season.

The two teams last year completed a trade deal involving Duremdes, Alex Cabagnot and Denok Miranda.

The Realtors have found an able replacement for Cabagnot with their acquisition of Ryan Reyes in the recent PBA Rookie Draft and may have firmed up their backcourt on the entry of Yeo.

Yeo was the No. 3 pick overall in last years draft pick behind Kelly Williams and Arwind Santos.

The Realtors picked Isip No. 6 overall last year. They also drafted Catli in the second round in 2005.

We really need a slasher, and Yeo may fit the description, said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez.

Yeo also has a good fans base. He may well boost crowd support for the team, Fernandez added.

As part of the deal, Sta.Lucia takes Coca-Colas second round pick in 2009.

The Tigers, meanwhile, have strengthened their frontcourt on the arrival of Isip, a steady force during his UAAP days with the FEU Tamaraws.

In Catli, the Tigers may have found a suitable replacement for veteran wingman Antonio whom the team decided not to re-sign.

KOREAN KT&G SQUAD NIPS WELCOAT
Devance proves worth, scores 35 in pre-season debut

Monday, 10 September 2007

Welcoat may really have found in Joe Devance the right player to build its team around on.

The top draft pick had a spectacular maiden showing with the Dragons although he missed two crucial free throws at endgame, costing them the game against the visiting KT&G team of Korea Monday night at The Arena in San Juan.

The Dragons suffered a 91-94 defeat which won't reflect in their win-loss record in the 2007 PBA pre-season tourney since the Korean team is a mere guest squad set to play five games.

Reinforced by imports Marquin Chandler and Robert Cummings, the Koreans will be up next against the Alaska Aces the recent Fiesta Conference champions and defending titlists in this pre-season event. They play at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the same venue.

Devance came through with a splendid 35-point showing, only to spoil his night with the two missed charities with the Dragons staring at a 91-92 deficit and time down to 16 seconds.

The 6-foot-7 center-forward out of University of Texas at El Paso earlier banged away a three-pointer then scored from close range as the Dragons came within one with 37 seconds to go.

He then intercepted a pass by Hee Jung Joo to Chandler the former Purefoods reinforcement giving the Dragons the chance to win the game. Alas, he fouled up from the stripe.

The two teams figured in a close match with neither enjoying a double-digit spread.

The Dragons came out strong from the halftime huddle and led by eight points before settling for a 66-63 lead going into the payoff period.

KT&G trailed most of the second quarter but pulled even at 46-all at halftime as Hee Jong Yang completed a three-point play with time down to 36 seconds.

Devance led all scorers with 16 points in the opening half with Jay-R Reyes adding 10. Yang paced the Koreans with 11.

Welcoat took a 27-26 edge in the opening period on back-to-back baskets by Adonis Sta. Maria and Devance. (NC)

The scores:

KT&G 94 Chandler 32, Yang 25, Cummings 16, Hwang 7, Eun 5, Lim 4, Yoo 4, Joo 1, Park 0, Lee 0.

Welcoat 91 Devance 35, Reyes 18, Gelig 6, Lopez 6, Wainwright 6, Dulay 5, Arana 4. Sta. Maria 4, Mente 2.

Quarterscores: 26-27, 46-46, 63-66, 94-91.

ing out flat, coach Derrick Pumaren ensued for an early timeout and the Pals responded to the call, erasing a 13-27 deficit as they seized the upper hand at 33-32 with 2:14 left in the opening quarter.

After closing the first period at 39-37, the Pals stepped up their attack in the second period and went on to take the half at 75-61. Talk n Text had its biggest lead in the first half at 72-53.

"So far, so good. We had a good training in the US and we are keen on working harder as we resume our training back home," said Pumaren.

"The team is upbeat especially on the return of Asi Taulava, Jimmy Alapag and Renren Ritualo from the national team," Pumaren added.

Pals step up training in Korea
By Nelson Beltran
Wednesday, October 3, 2007

Talk n Text is pressing its buildup for the coming season with a series of tune-up games in Korea, hoping to win a championship after placing third in the All-Filipino and second in the Fiesta Cup last campaign.

The Pals left for Seoul last weekend and played KBL (Korean Basketball League) ball clubs as part of their preparation that included a two-week training stint in San Antonio, Texas.

They have played two games so far, losing close duels with the import-reinforced Dongbu and KT&G teams. The team is to play two more games before heading back to Manila Saturday.

The team needs tune-up games to practice whatever theyve learned in the US. Apparently, it has yet to sink in, said team manager Frankie Lim, who has a personal goal of achieving back-to-back championships after steering the San Beda Red Lions to a title conquest in the recently concluded NCAA season.

Were pushing the team to improve on our third- and second-place finishes last season. Were looking to make the finals again and hopefully go all the way to win it, Lim added.

The Pals welcomed amateur recruit Yousif Aljamal in their fold in Korea.

Aljamal completed the TnT lineup, joining Asi Taulava, Yancy de Ocampo, Jay Washington, Don Allado Harvey Carey, Renren Ritualo, Macmac Cardona, Jimmy Alapag, Don Belano, Egay Billones and Patrick Fran, who are all holdovers from last years lineup.

The team is doing okay, just needing to improve on fluidity, which I think they can achieve in time for the opening, said Lim, optimistic they could make a good run for the championship in the All-Filipino.

Its hard to say what will happen in the Fiesta Cup since its an import-reinforced tourney. But in the All-Filipino, I do believe we have a good chance, Lim added.

He considers San Miguel Beer as another top contender with Barangay Ginebra, Purefoods and Alaska the dark horses.

GRUDGE MATCH FOR FIESTA FINALISTS ALASKA, TNT
Purefoods tangle with Sta. Lucia in explosive doubleheader

Tuesday, 16 October 2007

Asi Taulava sports a new look. The 6-foot-9 center of the Talk N Text Phone Pals now wears a moustache and beard that make him look in his own words like a terrorist.

Asi's new image, though, doesn't reflect the complexion of the team that came up short in its championship campaign in the last Fiesta Cup.

Basically, coach Derrick Pumaren will be working on practically the same unit he had last season but self-proclaimed experts contend the present roster packs more strength and power.

That observation is based on the premise that Taulava, court general Jimmy Alapag and hotshot Renren Ritualo have rejoined their mother unit after missing the entire last conference to don the tri-colors.

Their return, undoubtedly, added more depth to a team that came close to clinching the franchise's second championship even without the three superstars.

Not to mention, the Phone Pals also underwent extensive training and tune-up games during the off-season with stints in Texas, USA and South Korea.

"We had a very impressive training in the US. We definitely learned a lot during our stay there," offered Pumaren.

But for all the good reviews TNT received in the off-season, the one question remains: Will the Phone Pals end up as the last team standing at the close of the Smart PBA Philippine Cup?

Their season opener against Alaska 7:20 Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum should be a good indicator for the Phone Pals, who lost to the Aces in the deciding seventh game of the Fiesta Conference three months ago.

Two other debuting clubs Sta. Lucia and Purefoods showcase their potential in the 4:35 p.m. opener.

Except for trading shooting forward Nic Belasco, Alaska coach Tim Cone kept the core of his team intact that should bolster the Aces bid for back-to-back titles.

With a heavy heart, Cone let go of the hardworking Belasco to the Welcoat Dragons in exchange for the youthful Junjun Cabatu. Alaska also netted two promising rookies whom Cone considers steals in the rookie draft No. 6 pick Ken Bono and No.7 pick J.R. Quinahan.

Cone's three new recruits easily provide Alaska with a dynamic and potent frontcourt that should match up well with big and running teams like TNT, Magnolia and Air21.

Quinahan, the power-forward from the University of the Visayas, Bono and Cabatu are expected to give depth to the Aces' frontcourt that has Sonny Thoss as main man.

The sight of Quinahan,Bono and Thoss engaging the trio of Taulava, Harvey Carey and Don Allado in the paint certainly makes for an interesting highlight.

The backcourt should also be a joy to watch with reigning MVP Willie Miller anchoring Alaska's campaign against TNT's dreaded backcourt trio of Ritualo, Macmac Cardona and Donbel Belano.

KING JAMES STANDS TALLEST FOR GIANTS
Purefoods debuts with come-from-behind win over SLR in a highly physical match
2007-10-17_yap_2577.jpg
its campaign in the 2007 Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.

The Giants gave some and took some along the way as they went roaring in the fourth quarter, pulling off a come-from-behind victory in the extra-rugged contest marred by no less than nine technical fouls the most in a game in at least the last two seasons -- and two player ejections.

Hard fouls came aplenty with Purefoods Peter June Simon and Sta. Lucias Norman Gonzales thrown out for flagrant infractions.

"My battle cry in every timeout was that talo ang pikon sa laban na ito. Obviously, mas napikon ang Sta. Lucia dahil noong huli mas marami silang second motion," said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.

"Madali ang away dito. But the officials want this kind of officiating and Im fully supporting it. We just have to adjust with it," added Gregorio, noting a big difference on how the refs call the game from before to the present. "The difference is heaven and earth."

James Yap had a taste of this kind of officiating with the RP team in the Jones Cup but himself blew his top in a collision with Gonzales.

"First time kung napikon sa laro. Pero sino ang hindi, kung babanatan ka," said Yap.

"Yung pinakamabait kong player na si June Simon first time ma-thrown out," Gregorio offered.

The Giants, the preseason tournament champion and Philippine Cup titlist two seasons ago, toughened up in the fourth quarter, overcoming a 77-66 deficit at the start of the period.

Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez rued his team backed down from the fight in the fourth quarter.

Trailing by as many as 16, the Giants opened the payoff period with a swashbuckling 18-4 run to surge ahead to stay at 84-80.

The Realtors, who got tremendous boost from their new recruits, took control for most of the first three periods, sitting on a 52-47 cushion at halftime.

But the Giants never shied away from the highly physical battle, going to their veterans as they stemmed the tide in their favor in the fourth quarter.

The two teams engaged in a nip-and-tuck duel in the opening period with Yap, the 2006 MVP winner, scoring 17 points the most by any player in a quarter since Mike Hrabak made the same output in the first quarter of Red Bulls 111-112 loss to Talk N text in Game Five of their Fiesta Conference semifinals showdown last June 29.

Yap ended the 2006-07 season with back-to-back 40-point games against Welcoat and Coca-Cola.

Marc Pingris and Roger Yap came alive in the payoff period and finished with a combined production of 30 points and 14 rebounds. Kerby Raymundo wound up with 13 rebounds and nine points.

Kelly Williams, the 2007 Rookie of the Year, had 19 points and six rebounds for the Realtors who drew significant numbers from new recruits Christian Coronel, Joseph Yeo, Dennis Daa and Ryan Reyes.

Yeo finished with 11 points but had a crucial trey miss with Realtors down by only three at 89-92 with 30 seconds to go.

The scores:

Purefoods 96 Yap J. 29, Yap R. 16, Pingris 14, Simon 9, Raymundo 9, Salvador 8, Adducul 4, Lanete 3, Sanz 2, Larong 2, Evangelista 0.

Sta. Lucia 89 Williams 19, Coronel 12, Yeo 11, Espino 11, Mendoza 11, Daa 8, Reyes 8, Omolon 6, Gonzales 3, Miranda 0, Aquino 0.

Quarterscores: 31-29, 47-52, 66-76, 96-89

FIBA ASIA VETS RETURN, STAR IN TALK N TEXTS AUSPICIOUS START
Aces sign Miller at 11th hour, then records career-high
in the tourney where theyre among teams expected to figure prominently in the championship race.

Tokushima FIBA Asia championship veterans Asi Taulava, Jimmy Alapag and Renren Ritualo made their presence felt instantly, creating much problems for the Aces, who beat the Pals in their absence in the recent Fiesta Cup finale.

Taulava scored nine of his 19 points in the second quarter, spearheading a run that broke a close game open.

The Pals opened a 59-45 lead at the turn and led by as many as 20, 87-67, before facing a minor Alaska uprising in the final period.

"Its either you bump or you get bumped. No room for soft players and the boys showed theyre up to the challenge," said Talk N Text coach Derrick Pumaren.

"Its a matter of adjusting and the boys are ready to do that. They played well on defense and did the needed hustling," Pumaren added.

Alaska coach Tim Cone did much complaining on the refs calls and was banished from the game towards the end.

Also drawing solid games from Jay Washington, Harvey Carey and Yancy de Ocampo, the Pals established control in the second quarter and enjoyed a safe lead all the way to the finish.

Washington, Taulava, Carey, De Ocampo and Alapag each scored at least 11 for the Pals, who negated Willie Millers career-best 35-point explosion.

Miller, the 2002 and 2006-07 MVP winner, signed his new contract with the Aces a few hours before the game.

After a long-drawn negotiation, Miller and the Alaska management on Tuesday reached an agreement for a contract-extension worth P12.6 million in three years.

"It took us a long while to come to terms but it had never been a problem. Length of the contract lang ang hindi natapos agad," said Alaska governor and team manager Joaqui Trillo.

"Willies a pro. Hes religiously attending practice and team functions even when he was unsigned," Trillo added.

Miller had a solid all-round game against the Pals as he also collected seven assists, six rebounds and one steal in 38 minutes of action.

The scores:

Talk N Text 113 Washington 20, Taulava 19, Carey 15, De Ocampo 13, Alapag 11, Ritualo 9, Belano 8, Cardona 7, Allado 6, Aljamal 5.

Alaska 106 Miller 35, Dela Cruz 13, Thoss 12, Quinahan 10, Ferriols 9, Bono 7, Hugnatan 7, Cortez 7, Cariaso 4, Laure 2, Cabatu 0, Juinio 0.

Quarterscores: 22-23, 59-45, 87-70, 113-106.
