***OFFICIAL PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 2011 SEASON THREAD***

Well, our season is officially over..Anyone else worried that the Eagles keep Castillo because of the defense over the past few games and then he does a crappy job to start the season again next year?

Yeah I'm worried about them trying to keep Castillo too, took him too long to figure his job out and it cost us in the end. No doubt Reid is gonna stay since we finished strong and he couldn't help that Mike Vick got injured but some changes gotta come sooner or later right?

Sucks that we dominate our competition within the division but lost so many winnable games early on, that Cardinals loss infuriates me to no end

I'm with you man..Every time I think back to those games we blew, I just think "All we needed was ONE more win, and we'd be in the playoffs"

When I was mathematically trying to figure out how this team could make the playoffs after that miserable start of the season, I kept telling myself "10-6 gives us a good shot at making it but it's gonna be close"..Now that I realize even 9-7 would have gotten us in, I get frustrated

sadly, i think our coordinator position comes down to whatever happens in st. louis.. if HE isn't fired then we end up keeping castillo (not that he hasn't gotten better)

just focus on the positives.. we still have a young team.. and we have a ton of draft picks

dont dwell on what could have been, it will only be infuriating

merry christmas guys!

strong finish to the season despite all the speed bumps we hit earlier in the year

can't be any worse for us next year, we should rebound strongly

I honestly have no idea what our coaching staff is gonna look like next year other than keeping Reid, same with Desean Jackson

tough season; what could have been...I really feel like we are the best team in the division and it gives me hope for next year. Now let's hope this season wakes Andy Reid up and we draft a LB and time to give DeSean a contract unless they plan to draft one of those WR's in the first round.

Extremely disappointing season, especially after all those high expectations the majority of fans had..But I'd rather finish 8-8 due to a winning streak after a horrible start, than to be 8-8 because the team started hot and fizzled out..A team finishing off a season strong shows their character, especially when they know they can just phone it in and get on their vacation.

There were many negatives this season, but here are the positives from my perspective:

#1: 5-1 record in the division..Only divisional loss was early in the year, then the team had no issue beating teams in the division from that point on.If I'm not mistaken, they were 5-0 after that initial divisional loss.

#2-LeSean McCoy proved to the people that sleep on him that he's one of the top RB in the league..Along with his breakout year was the recognition that Peters finally got for helping McCoy break off some of those big runs.

#3-Defense..yes, yes, I know..The team played horrible defense the first 65% of the year, but the past few weeks, that defense has looked great..if this team continues to play that kind of defense, they're in a good position going forward

#4-Celek and Maclin developing as receivers..Celek continues to get better and Maclin would be up there in terms of yardage and receptions if he didn't get hurt...Also, if Vick didn't miss those games, he would have had an even better year.

If I'm not mistaken, we a also led the league in turnovers. Gotta find a way to cut those down. We'll be alright.

Andy will be back as coach next year. IMO its a good decision. You don't get rid of a head coach that has done well for you the best decade. Just a bump in the road to glory.
5 things the Eagles must do in offseason
(1) Hire a new defensive coordinator. It's very possible Juan Castillo has turned the corner after a rough transition, but as Remo Gaggi asked in the movie "Casino," why take a chance? Lots of good people are available, including Steve Spagnuolo.

(2) Add a proven personnel man or consultant to the front office or scouting staff. This person's role would be to better evaluate college talent, particularly top-end defensive talent, which the Eagles apparently have no clue how to judge anymore.

(3) Change quarterback Michael Vick's mind-set. Short of using electric shock therapy or torture, use whatever means necessary to keep him from getting too aggressive with both his throws and his runs, thereby reducing his turnovers.
(4) Get wide receiver DeSean Jackson motivated again. Jackson is a proven talent whose value to the offense and special teams (when properly motivated) cannot be denied. Show him the money, and the offense will be better for it.
(5) Use considerable resources to move up in the first round of the NFL Draft to land their quarterback of the future. Even if Vick does turn it around, it can't hurt to have his successor holding the clipboard next season. And when Vick inevitably goes down, the new guy (Andrew Luck? Robert Griffin? Landry Jones?) might just be better than Vince Young or Mike Kafka.

I did notice Vick made a conscious effort to not play as risky in his last 4 games, he didn't take too many unnecessary hits like he was earlier in the season. Missing the playoffs by a single game just shows how much we need him to be healthy for a full season. He needs to get in the weight room this offseason if he wants to be more of the pocket passer he's shown the last 4 games of the season

^ like i said before.. this teams needs quality over quantity.. we NEED impact guys at very specific spots

so i want us to use the 10 draft picks we have and asante, who will be traded, and figure out who it is we want and go after them

also they QB comment is a very key one.. the eagles are really only on the books for next year with vick's deal (12.5 mill).. we have alot of young guys on the team (mccoy, maclin, celek, maybe desean, etc.) so i could easily see us trying to pull a rodgers

I've been saying that for weeks..RG3 fits perfectly into this system and since he won't come out and start right away, it would give him time to learn the offense and also hit the weight room so he can get stronger so he doesn't get crushed like Vick does.

I also agree with itsaboutthattime's list that he posted, where they say that the Eagles need a better college scout..That is crucial because the Eagles have so many draft picks this year, that they can't keep picking average/slightly above average players anymore..They need to draft an impact player that can come off the bench if a starter gets hurt and not be a huge liablity, like Casey Matthews was last year.

^ the situation was just unfair for casey.. he isn't a MLB in any scheme.. and shouldn't have been forced into that position from day 1

but the problem was compounded by making him the MIKE in the wide 9 scheme.. dude is a WILL in a regular 4-3 alignment.. and did play pretty well there when he came in, in the nickle packages at the end of the year

but we have no real MLBs on our roster, just WILLs and SAMs.. i would love to see us get a guy like kuechly in the late first (could trade up) or early second

also if we are able to bring back spags, i would shop babin hard since i dont think he will be as effective in a regular 4-3 scheme (which i assume spags will go back to).. and his contract is relatively cheap for any team that would/will run the 'wide 9' (but is a bit expensive for a situational pass rusher).. maybe we can send asante and babin to the lions for their 1st (only team i can think of that run the wide 9 off the top of my head.. they also need a corner)
Source: Spags to Coach in '12; Open to Birds
Steve Spagnuolo, fired this week as head coach of the St. Louis Rams, has considerable cachet as a defensive coordinator, despite his 10-38 record in three seasons running the Rams. That's because Spagnuolo was the Giants' DC when they won the Super Bowl four years ago, and is considered by many to be the architect of that triumph. Before that, Spagnuolo was among the best and brightest on Jim Johnson's Eagles defensive staff.

Sometimes when a coach is fired with a year left on his deal, he prefers to sit back and watch, maybe do a little TV work, collecting the paycheck. A source close to Spagnuolo said today that is not Spags' mindset. The source said Spagnuolo, 52, expects to coach in the NFL next season, and would be interested in any opening that might occur with the Eagles.

That's news because the Newark Star-Ledger last week implied otherwise, noting that Spagnuolo was not happy his final year in Philadelphia (2006). When then-Birds offensive coordinator Brad Childress got the head coaching job in Minnesota, Childress wanted to take Spagnuolo with him as defensive coordinator. But Eagles coach Andy Reid said that when he was in Green Bay, Mike Holmgren had a rule about assistants who left to become head coaches -- they should build their own staffs, not pilfer from his. Reid said he wasn't letting Childress take anyone with him.

Of course, a year later Spagnuolo left for the Giants, and that all worked out pretty well for him. And last year at the NFL Scouting Combine, Spagnuolo took part in a dinner orgasnized by former Reid assistants, Spags speaking appreciatively of his former head coach.

The source did not say Spagnuolo definitely is coming back here. He expects to have options, the source said, and no doubt he is interested in weighing them. We still don't know there is an opening with the Eagles. Team chairman Jeffrey Lurie seemed to send mixed signals on defensive coordinator Juan Castillo in Lurie's Tuesday press conference. There has been speculation that even if Castillo stays, Spagnuolo might return as some sort of assistant head coach, adding defensive savvy to the mix and perhaps positioning himself as Reid's logical successor.

All we know right now for sure is that Reid isn't going to do any sort of season wrapup press conference until the Castillo situation is resolved. And no such press conference has been scheduled.
News and notes: Bowles interested; Cooper re-signs
By Cody BenjaminPublished: January 4, 2012Posted in: News/Features

If the Eagles would have made the playoffs, the storylines revolving around the team likely would have focused on the game ahead, but as is the case when the Birds fall short of their expectations, just about anything anybody wants to discuss in the offseason is what’s to come. For Philadelphia, a head coaching change won’t be coming as 2012 approaches (owner Jeffrey Lurie made such clear in a recent press conference), but there could very well be some headlining moves at other positions on the staff and roster, especially with the club looking to make a major turnaround from a disappointing ’11 season. Here’s a bit of news and a few notes on the latest rumors and happenings pertaining to the Eagles:

Bowles interested in defensive coordinator position: According to a report from Tim McManus of Philadelphia Sports Daily, interim Dolphins head coach Todd Bowles is interested in the Eagles’ defensive coordinator position, should it become available. While former offensive line coach Juan Castillo remains in place as Philadelphia’s coordinator, there has been much speculation regarding Castillo’s future after an up-and-down showing from the defense in 2011, and Bowles would reportedly be willing to come to the Eagles, assuming he doesn’t land a head coaching gig with a needy team like St. Louis or Miami, where he’s being interviewed.

RB Graig Cooper re-signs with Eagles: On the same day they announced the return of former fourth-round draft pick Trevard Lindley, the Eagles have welcomed back running back Graig Cooper, an undrafted rookie free agent in 2011 who spent time with the team last offseason. The 24-year-old Miami product was once regarded as an early-round college prospect because of his size and athleticism, but saw his draft stock plummet as a result of a severe knee injury. Competing for the Eagles’ No. 3 RB job last summer, he scored a touchdown in the preseason, but was released as part of the team’s final roster cuts in September. With additional depth needed for the offseason months ahead, Cooper has returned on a short-term contract in hope of earning a job with another opportunity.

Spagnuolo open to returning to the Eagles: A report in late December suggested that then-Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo would be returning to the Eagles as a replacement for Castillo as the defensive coordinator, and Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News has followed up ongoing speculation with a tidbit of his own. According to Bowen, Spagnuolo fully plans on coaching in 2012 after being fired by St. Louis, and would be interested in rejoining Philadelphia for “any opening

Spagnuolo sounds like a good pickup, but I dunno about completely changing the defensive scheme AGAIN
