Can someone please explain what an HDR image is? And what's the difference with that and a regular photo...also so examples? That would be very much appreciated.

^ a HDR is a photoshop techinque. stands for High Dynamic Range. basically you're pushing the high and low values to extremes and it makes it look like luminism painting. The difference between a regular photo is simple that values havent been pushed or atleast not to extremes... Basically as far I'm concerned its like alot of other photoshop techniques, in that yeah its cool, but if you have adjust the contrast on your photos that much and make them look like paintings there is problem... It's one of those things "professional" photographers (note the qoutes) do to spice up their otherwise mediocre and kinda boring photos. End of the day if you want to try it more power to you but I'd put a million dollars no one in the art photography industry who is anyone does it...

HDR stands for high dynamic range.

What it basically means is...

A set of techniques that allow a far greater dynamic range of exposures (i.e. a large range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to the deepest shadows.

For example using whthalos pics. Not the best HDR but its close.

^^^ Your HDR's are alot less extreme then most of i've seen. literally alot of them look like oil paintings from like 1860... Yours still actually look like photographs.

So are you just messing with the levels of the pictures? Seems like HDR is is just another way if say "intense photoshop". I thought you had to take like 3-4 different pics of the same thing, all at different levels, and composite them together. In that case, every damn photo I take is like a diet-HDR cause my photos are never the way they should be.

I have to cover a concert and all I have is my stock 18-55mm lens for my Digital Rebel XT. Now I know the ISO is gonna have to be pretty high in the 800-1600 range but also do you think I should go with the flash or keep it without flash and use the lights that the stage has provided. I will be on stage so I'll be close, but I was checking Okayplayer.com

I use flashes quite often, I have 5 of them... but I would say ultimately it depends on what you want the photograph to look like. I think it can be a successful photograph either way. Personally I would go no flash. I when I use flashes I use diffusers and/or bounce them off walls in reasonably small spaces... As a result I get a reasonably good difusion when things are working as they should. (things get complicated with 2-3 flashes all working together).

Anyhow, to effective use a flash you're going to have to fire it directly at your subject because there is no where to bounce it effectively in most music venues... that's going to give you a very amateur ala like american apparel photography kinda look. like hipsters types are all about photography so if thats your market that might be your answer...

But honestly I would go no flash and just open the lense up if its just the one person and rely on the lights most music venues I go to provide a reasonable amount of light if you open the lense up and are relatively close or on the stage... I would also always go down an f-stop or shutterspeed because any meter reading is going to be probably pretty inaccurate thus giving you underexposure...

Personally that situation doesnt strike me as idea for a flash. but just a peice of advice is if you do go the flash way make sure its an external one and get a flash bracket. the further you can get the flash from the lense the better... Also the one advantage you have with a flash in this situation is there is little place for a shadow to be created.. so end of the day I think either can be done successfully. but definately a flash bracket would help if thats the route you go...

Btw, I like your work, but I wish they weren't all 45 degree's counter clockwise from horizontal but I suppose if that's your steez you do it well...

Haha. Well whthalo already had the border on it so it HDR'ed the whole thing.
As for designs.... ugh I dunno. I havent been into it lately. With the move
and the printer dude closing out his business I gotta do some searching.

Well it takes time to upload all those pics and post! haha.

As for the quote. Umm I didnt get it from picasso. I forgot where I heard it
from but it kinda stuck to me because I wanted a saying/quote that
stands out and I thought it was powerful, and plus the only available
domain name was realizethetruth because all of the realize.'s were taken.
But with your extensive knowledge of ART... I am really digging that
quote and possibly do a design playing off of Picasso with that quote.

Yeah hit me up bro. Theres a lot of different looks with HDR so let me
how you want it. Also if you want me to touch it up more in PS and add
a gaussian blur overlay or whatever.

I would say yes and no. It can be done with a lot of tweaks and work in
PS but Photomatix does a lot of the work for you. Also there are plug-ins
in PS that will do it for you also, but I like photomatix outcome a lot better.

so, i pretty much had no idea that you can create HDR's just from using what they give you in PS. i've spent this entire day, just trying to figure out how to get an HDR perfect, by taking several different shots and then combining them...eff that.
