A solid summary of how big city politics actually work
Also, on the subject of big cities, I think one big reason why conservatives hate big cities (along with the usual racism, xenophobia and homophobia) is that unlike in the suburbs and rural areas, where poverty is hidden and sequestered from pockets off affluence, you can see poverty and human misery on display. Our system of capitalism requires there to be people poor and/or unhoused people, that’s true no matter the local population density. In big cities, especially on public transit and in central business districts, you have to see the human costs of capitalism and the suffering is made all the more dramatic because it’s so physically close to such extreme affluence.
As a result, conservatives pretend that poverty only exists where it’s undeniably visible and then blame that poverty on the “Democrat” mayor and not the fact that big cities are dictatorships of capital, just like the rest of the country.
