The federal government can incentivize local law enforcement support in ways that bypass the influence of the local elite: more money, more equipment, more protection against the local constituency would make quite a few PDs act in support of the WH.

In addition, most American cities are within the jurisdiction of Border Patrol (which extends 100 miles from any part of the US border), so all BP enforcers really have to do is set up shop on American roadways, while the state police watches complacently. The last 10 years have shown that American laws are very malleable, and whoever chooses to go against the norms for their own benefit won't be stopped by traditional institutional bodies because of those very norms.

The next Trump term won't be mild for most people. The destruction he plans to bring about will be a window of opportunity for Democrats, as they have an excellent chance at redefining the entire legacy of the GOP as agents of social destruction, from Reagan (genesis of anti-government sentiment) to Gingrich (agent of anti-compromise) to McConnell (norm breaker). But for this message to stay implanted in peoples brains beyond the next couple of years, they need to let the full force of the Trump administration come down on folks.

People need to ******* wake up and realize the only folks for whom politics is a game are those who can check in and out of it without worrying about their material future.
