ive heard people argue DeBlasio was good, and the hatred of him at the end was totally irrational.

I worked for the city then and a lot of the hate was irrational, BUT at the end there all the skeletons came out like the deal he made with La Marina to get the TLC support, and the questionable donations he got during his first mayoral run. His incessant push to make his wife a politician. None of is Eric Adams bad but he had issues that mostly came to head the last year of his mayorship and became larger than they were due to recency bias.

The other reason could just be his style of governance wasn’t likable. De Blasio was very quick to fire or remove agency heads or staffers who messed up. It was the opposite of Adam’s who keep around the scumbags years after they should have been jettisoned. He got into beef with the cops, got into a feud with Cuomo, and brought DEI to the city. Honestly he was always more intellectual than charismatic, so not being scared to do something controversial didn’t help him.

However, as big city mayors go he was good, and better than most of NYC’s recent mayors. He kept crime down, introduced 3k, tried to face the homeless crisis with an emphasis on mental healthcare and further support, and he did an admirable job during Covid. He didn’t get any of the flowers he deserved because he had lockdown going but I think everyone appreciates him more by default due to how bad Eric Adam’s has been at the job.
