Well at least this is progress. Unlike da Ninja, you can actually admit that you may not always fully understand people in different situations.Well I live in NoVa, Alexandria City to be more specific and it's ridiculously diverse out here as well as liberal. But I will say I live in an economic bubble, because of the federal government this area will always flourish economically which makes it difficult to understand the hardships of people in other parts of the country. But because I keep my finger on the pulse it's easy to know what keeps people up at night, and I promise you it isn't voter suppression, the illegal immigrant wall, or transgender bathrooms, it's the economy, stupid.
(That last part was James Carville, I'm not calling you stupid)
I'm guessing this is also why you deny/dismiss voter suppression; you don't personally come in contact with it and struggle to empathize with those who do. Which is understandable I suppose.
If you lived in a state like Wisconsin or North Carolina and were less well off economically, perhaps your view would be a whole lot different. Because you could be one of the many African-Americans targeted by GOP leadership to suppress your vote. The statistics, testimonies and further evidence are clear. In the case of NC even a longtime NC republican consultant explicitly said the voter ID law was made to disenfranchise black voters.
This election has essentially legitimized such practices, as the GOP strongly supports strict voter ID laws and defends them to the very end when courts shut them down for being racially discriminatory. Trump has also supported NC's voter ID law after the court struck down most of it for "targeting African-Americans with almost surgical precision"
I'm sure voter suppression doesn't keep most of the country awake at night, but it is most certainly an issue for those who are victims of it. It is something that should worry African-Americans and latinos, as they are always the main victims of these practices. With Trump's victory, I don't think it's all that unlikely that these kind of voter suppression practices will spread to many more states. And that should worry anyone who believes in democracy and equal rights, whether it personally affects you or not.
