I'm all for bashing the North Korean government, but I feel like a small but vocal amount of Trump supporters could potentially become a group that hates Koreans in general, even if they really are South Korean.

Yeah that was basically where I was going, just couldn't put it so eloquently. Luckily most of my family live in liberal cities.

As someone that is Asian, I know how emboldened some of these racists are after the election, hate crimes against Asians have spiked as of late.

Anyway I been noticing on twitter and other forums that CNN anchors and employees are getting doxxed by trolls and Trump supporters...

Speaking of hatred towards Asians, I have to fly to South Dakota for work for the rest of the week :x Looking forward to my quarterly "Let's all death stare at the only non white person in this city" trip

I actually don't mind going out to small towns/villages in Asia and Europe, because even though I get curious looks here and there, it's never THAT type of look that minorities in US know all too well :{

CNN discovers identity of Reddit user behind recent Trump CNN gif, reserves right to publish his name should he resume "ugly behavior"
u/anauthor

http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/04/politics/kfile-reddit-user-trump-tweet/index.html

Quote:

"After posting his apology, "HanAholeSolo" called CNN's KFile and confirmed his identity. In the interview, "HanAholeSolo" sounded nervous about his identity being revealed and asked to not be named out of fear for his personal safety and for the public embarrassment it would bring to him and his family.

CNN is not publishing "HanA**holeSolo's" name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.

CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change."

Happy 4th of July, America.

Yikes
This is where I actually have to say CNN is in the wrong for trying to shame the creator of the gif to just stop posting
Its just a gif, although very childish of the president to tweet it out.

Do not underestimate the power of subreddits and online forums in radicalizing and recruiting extremists. Terrorist groups have shown how effective they are, and the neo-nazis are learning and applying those lessons too.

It doesn't help that for far too many people, understanding of politics doesn't go beyond the meme level. Remember that pre-election video of Trump supporters coming up with all these ridiculous ways to build the wall or deport foreigners and how serious they were?

See this is where there's a slippery slope imo
I don't like to see xenophobic or racist imagery...but I don't think a media conglomerate has the right to threaten a user of reddit to take down his work
The act of doxxing and threats could be used very well against anti Trumpers as well by the pro Trump media and supporters, as they are trying to do right now.
The best would have been for CNN to just report to Reddit instead if the gifs and images violate the TOS instead of adding extra drama and hyper backlash.

The article above goes at length about the nature of the creator's reddit posts.

I am aware of the slippery slope, which is why it is important to consider the context in which CNN's actions take place. The guy was fairly anonymous. However, he was tweeted by Trump, who is a political figure, which brought scrutiny to the other stuff he created. In addition, some journalists critical of Trump have started getting death threats and the guy had another post with many CNN journalists tagged with the star of David on a rather anti-semitic subreddit.

If a "democratically" elected president is not going to stand for one of the pillars of democracy (the press), I won't fault media outlets for taking the steps they deem necessary to continue covering the administration and informing us (BTW, I am not at all fond of CNN's general coverage).

And I know I'm probably going to sound alarmist, but I come from a country where journalists get jailed for years for reporting on the health of the president. If we get to point in the US, it's gonna be too late to ever come back to a democratic society in our lifetime.

I don't mind CNN getting down in the mud. The damn president is tweeting these stupid gifs/memes/statements and they and other press outlets have had to take it on the chin for over a year now. Give his name to the lawyers and let them law.

I'd be all for a press boycott/blackout of Trump. I don't eem care if he's the president. Report relevant actual news and don't mention him by name. No more stupid tweets.

edit: I just thought about it THE DAMN PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS RETWEETING GIFS OF HIM ON A WWE SHOW PUNCHING A GUY WITH A CNN HEAD. THIS IS FREAKING RIDICULOUS.

WATTBA. :{

I'd want that too, but all outlets aren't PBS/NPR/CSPAN, which focus on what is happening and how lives/society might be affected. For most outlets, the focus is on ratings first. Unfortunately, those are the most watched channels and Muricans are allergic to reading.
