In his speech today, trump is extolling the virtues of the Western world and calling the fight against Isis a battle over Western civilization.

Does he (or his followers) not see that liberals and Democrats are the ones most in favor of Western values?

It relates a bit to the paradox that liberals often find themselves in, where they are on the same side of those who are completely illiberal (Iran, Palestine, etc). And, conversely, conservatives often find themselves claiming support for liberal values elsewhere while treading on those same rights here at home.
