If true then I think I see the play being made here. China gets US out of another asian country further solidifying their dominance in the continent.
And NK no longer has to worry about the US being right across the border while still having big brother China around to have their back.

Xi is consolidating power across the continent. Pull NK strings and promise them a role in future world politics, weaken SK and the US' role, and compete with Japan for dominance over the next generation. Scary thought having Xi and Putin in charge of the east, with basically uncontested power.

Putin influences the election to help Trump get elected and then lets America shoot themselves in the foot with their new reductive foreign policy.
With USA out the way he and Xi look to divvy up the eastern hemisphere and step into the roles they've always wanted, leaders of the not-so-free world.
I doubt they consulted with each other on this but Xi can clearly see what's going on and is making the appropriate moves to help China.
And to think they're teaching children in textbooks that the Cold War is over, when it's simply moved into another phase. One we're currently losing.
