Report: 49ers file tampering charges against Jets
The 49ers have filed tampering charges against the New York Jets for having illegal contact regarding unsigned draft pick Michael Crabtree, the New York Daily News reports. The newspaper cites "sources."
According the report, the 49ers may believe the Jets contacted Crabtree's agent, Eugene Parker, to let him know they'd be interested in trading for his rights, or in drafting him in 2010 with a better salary than the 49ers are offering.
The deadline passed last month for a team to trade an unsigned draft pick. (They are prohibited from doing a sign-and-trade, too.) If Crabtree remains unsigned past through Nov. 17, he can't play this season. The 49ers would then have a seven-week window, beginning March 5, to trade him before the draft.
Deion Sanders, a mentor to Crabtree, recently said Crabtree knows of two teams willing to pay him top dollar.
"We'll let the NFL figure that one out," Jets coach Rex Ryan said this morning on "Mike and Mike in the Morning" on ESPN Radio. "I think it's ridiculous, personally. . . . I wish we were playing them (the 49ers)."
The NFL declined comment this morning.
"We do not comment on reports of tampering," NFL senior vice president of public relations Greg Aiello said. On September 5, the day after Sanders' comments, Aiello told The Press Democrat that it was an issue between the 49ers and Crabtree.
In 2008, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell ruled the 49ers violated the league anti-tampering policy when it contacted Drew Rosenhaus, agent for Bears linebacker Lance Briggs, during the 2007 season. The 49ers forfeited their fifth-round pick, and the 49ers and Bears swapped third-round picks. (The 49ers were originally slated to pick five picks earlier than the Bears in the round.)
In response to the ruling, 49ers GM Scot McCloughan objected to the punishment.
"The 49ers organization respects Commissioner Goodell's ruling, however we do disagree with it," McCloughan. "This was not a malicious act; we believe that our intent was within the NFL guidelines. Going forward, we will take the necessary steps to ensure we are in compliance with the NFL's interpretation."

A 49ers spokesman said the 49ers would make not public comment, saying, "Those are internal matters that are handled by the league, therefore we are not going to discuss the topic."
Something better be done about this
Now I wanna see who the other team is

That's going to be very hard to prove. I think this was more of a statement to Crabtree than anything.Originally Posted by NikeTalker23

unless the Jets are found guilty of tampering..
Deion Sanders probably just wanted to explain to basic cable-watching schlubs like you and me why Michael Crabtree had good reasons to turn down a $20 million market-value contract offer from the San Francisco 49ers.
But Deion's choice of words may have seriously undermined Crabtree's quest for a bigger payday.
A report from ESPN's Chris Mortensen confirms that Deion Sanders' remarks on the NFL Network did in fact prompt the 49ers to suspect that other NFL teams were tampering with their negotiations with the unsigned rookie.
As Tim Kawakami writes on the Mercury News blog, "Deion Sanders is now a key player, which is never good."
What's rotten in the state of Deion's reporting can be summed up in one sentence he uttered on the NFL Network. "There have been two teams that have contacted the San Francisco 49ers desiring a trade and will pay this kid," Sanders said in an interview available online, "And he knows that."
That interview will now live in infamy, and not just because Deion actually went on television in a pastel rainbow-striped shirt with a pink tie. If "this kid" Crabtree actually "knows that" other teams have committed to offering him millions more, then it's an open-and-shut case of tampering. Teams are prohibited from communicating offers to players who are property of another team.
But Deion didn't say anything about any New York Jets in those comments, and the 49ers' charges reported in the New York Daily News do specifically name the Jets. You can bet the 49ers are submitting additional evidence beyond Deion Sanders' remarks, additional evidence we don't know about yet.
And if that's not X-Files enough to give your spine goose bumps, consider that Deion specifically said "two teams". Cam Inman thinks that one over in Tuesday's Mercury News and writes, "Because this report comes out of New York and involves one of that state (or, OK, New Jersey's) teams, you have to wonder if the 49ers have levied charges against other teams and news hasn't leaked out yet. Stay tuned."
Stay tuned indeed, but don't expect to see Deion being allowed to argue Crabtree's case on television again anytime soon.
Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who thinks Deion Sanders' wardrobe makes a good case against the digital-television conversion.
Deion's been acting real shady when ever they gotta talk about the 9ers lately. I still wanna know the other team. It's gotta be the cowboys.

And if they do prove tampering than we would get a 4th or 5th rounder at best. We definitely wouldn't be given a 1st or 2nd rounder or anything like that.
Exactly.Originally Posted by Jehlers02

Thats gonna casue problems if ppl can choose where they can play.
