just before the Seattle announcement, it seemed Everton were as well

im sure Omar has interest, strong physical centre backs are not exactly in great supply..he just needs to tidy up his positioning a bit, he'll be fine

Warren Barton made a good point the other day, Omar does incredibly well in the air and is good at breaking up plays in front of him..its when he has players running off his shoulder, he doesnt always position himself to see man and ball and thats when he gets caught..it seems like such an easy thing to fix really..he has all the physical attributes to play in a top league

If the Spurs were NOT fixated on selling Clint, they wouldn't have put him on the transfer list & remove his image from their twitter page the day he was put on the list (earlier this summer). He didn't fit them tactically & they had no plans on keeping him or loaning him out. They wanted him gone hence all the acquisitions they made in the summer transfer window.

When everyone was healthy for the Spurs last season, they had Aaron Lennon & Gareth Bale on the wings with Kyle Walker at full-back , then Defoe at striker. AVB liked for his side to attack on the counter with speed which is something Deuce struggled with a great deal in fact Deuce slowed down their counter attack quite a bit which led to AVB not playing him much as the season wore on.

Also Deuce's natural position is on the left side which was occupied by Bale leaving Deuce in a more central role last season which he struggled with a great deal. He's not a creative mid at all.

Let's also not forget he burned a lot of bridges while at Fulham. It was a messy separation which might have created a bad reputation when you add that & his difficulties with the Spurs last season.

I've been reading the transfer news religiously all summer (from the UK & Spanish press) & there wasn't any peep about Deuce until just before he signed with Seattle. There was rumors of interest from Liverpool back in Jan & an Everton rumor because he was in San Fran at the same time they were. That's it.

As for Omar, He has talent/ability, even some skill but he can be very lazy. He doesn't chase down balls when he ought to which causes for crosses that lead to scores (like against Honduras early in the year, against Belguim, & Jamaica as examples). He ball watches way too much. He'll start off games really well but the second half of games while playing for the USNT is where he melts down (fatigue perhaps?).

  • Jan. 29, 2013, U.S. Men vs. Canada - It was a clean outing from the LA Galaxy defender. Gonzo would have been the star if he'd been able to put away one of those restarts.
  • Feb. 6, 2013, U.S. Men vs. Honduras - It was a difficult place for Gonzalez to start his first competitive international game. That said, Gonzalez had a poor performance and his passing out of the back also left a lot to be desired.
  • March 22, 2013, U.S. Men vs. Costa Rica - Gonzalez bounced back from his rough go in Honduras with a monster showing against Los Ticos. Gonzalez was not called upon in the early going so much, but he warmed up as the snow came down, his signature moment a block on Ruiz's seemingly open attempt from the edge of the area at the end of the first half. From that point on, Gonzalez grew even more into the game and provided strong, confident leadership in addition to sound distribution. A necessary performance for his accelerated development.
  • March 26, 2013, U.S. Men vs. Mexico - Like the 2012 MLS Cup final, this was a career-defining performance from Gonzalez. Mexico's 20 open-play crosses and 15 corner kicks felt laser-guided to Gonzalez's head. This game probably justifies Klinsmann's decision to start the green Gonzalez in Honduras, and hints at 24-year-old's upside
  • May 29, 2013, U.S. Men vs. Belgium - The inconsistencies that come along with growing pains manifested themselves for Gonzalez on a night when the L.A. Galaxy anchor was matched up against world-class opposition. On Belgium's first goal, Gonzalez let Lukaku roam between him and Clarence Goodson into a gaping hole, and then he was too slow to react when Howard parried the ball away. On Belgium's second goal, Gonzalez ran onto a pass into the U.S. box, but instead of clearing cleanly, his touch handed the ball right to Kevin De Bruyne, who squared to Christian Benteke for an easy goal. For every Costa Rica and Mexico game that Gonzalez has, there is a Honduras or Belgium one. The hope for Klinsmann is that the latter showings become less and less frequent.
  • June 2, 2013, U.S. Men vs. Germany - As he's proven he is capable of doing, Gonzalez bounced back from a poor outing with a strong showing, but his performance waned in the second 45 minutes. He lost Heiko Westermann on a corner kick just minutes into the second half, allowing the Hamburg defender to head home from an uncontested position. Gonzalez was in the thick of it with the defense getting stretched and pressed in the final minutes. Considering how soundly positioned he was in the first half, it showed that he is able to overcome the mental hurdle of a shocker to effectively mark the likes of Miroslav Klose and Draxler.
  • June 7, 2013 , U.S. Men vs. Jamaica - Was dominating in the air and was sure in his tackling. Most importantly, he was much more consistent and remained mistake-free.
  • June 11, 2013, U.S. Men vs. Panama - Gonzalez provided sound cover for Evans when necessary and had an altogether strong performance. His distribution out of the back improved from past showings and he adjusted well when Panama shifted to a two-forward front in the second half. Gonzalez was at fault for Panama's best chance, keeping Blackburn onside and failing to stay with him as he got in behind and fired on goal. But aside from that slip-up, Gonzalez turned in a solid match.
  • June 18, 2013, U.S. Men vs. Honduras - The distribution from the LA Galaxy defender continues to disappoint. One turnover led to the early yellow for Jones. Aside from the persistent mental lapses, Gonzalez held his line well.

Clint Dempsey isn't a transfer story in early August in Europe. It wasn't in the papers because how many rumors in the papers do you read about West Brom or Everton targets? Not any until right before its done. Just because you didn't read anything doesn't mean its the only offer.

Just because he was listed on the transfer market doesn't mean they were fixated on selling him. You're reading way to much into twitter. It's no secret that Dempsey didn't fit into their long term plans and that Spurs wanted to sell, the point is it wasn't a situation where Dempsey was going to be gone by September 1 at all cost. If the right offer didn't come a long they were going to keep him, with everything so quiet before the Sounders came out of nowhere a lot of journalist thought Spurs might struggle to get the type of offer they wanted and wouldn't have been surprised at all if he remained. 

Either way, if you really think the Sounders were the only team interested in Clint or that there weren't other Prem clubs interested in Clint, I honestly don't know what to say. Same with Omar, he's been on European clubs radar for years.

Bedoya signs with Nantes in Ligue 1. Move up from Sweden, good for him.

JAB not on German U21 roster. Seems likely he will be in Bosnia next week. In typical Klinsmann style, that roster won't be out until Monday.
 
I've done a 180 on Clint's move. I really like it now. My only concern is keeping him healthy in MLS w/ their lackluster officiating.

At this stage in his career, with no future at Tottenham it was a great move to make. Having a major influence on the game in his country is the icing on the cake. His deal broke the MLS's transfer record.... The man's is getting 32 milli over 4 years?! C'mon man... and playing for the team in MLS with the best fan support. His debut match vs. Portland is SOLD OUT. 67,000 tickets sold for the Pac NW derby... 67,000!!! in MLS?!?! C'mon man.... That's crazy. That s**ts on White Heart Lane's 36,000.

The largest home crowd Clint Dempsey will play in front of will be an MLS side. Who would have thunk it?

Dempsey left off U.S. national squad for Bosnia friendly

New Seattle Sounders signing Clint Dempsey has been omitted from the U.S. national team squad for next Wednesday's friendly in Sarajevo against Bosnia-Herzegovina, SI.com has learned.

Dempsey, the U.S. captain, has been a busy man lately and is expected to make his Sounders debut Saturday in Toronto. Players adjusting to new club environments often skip FIFA's August friendly date, which comes at an awkward time at the start of the European club calendar.

It remains to be seen what U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann thinks of Dempsey's move from Tottenham Hotspur to Seattle. Klinsmann has not commented publicly on the move, though he has said in the past that he wants his U.S. players to challenge themselves at the highest possible club level.

Dempsey's Seattle teammates, Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans, will be part of the U.S. squad next week, according to a source with knowledge of the call-ups.

In other U.S. squad news, SI.com has also confirmed that promising 20-year-old Hertha Berlin defender John Anthony Brooks has accepted a call-up and will be with the U.S. senior team for the first time next week. Brooks, the son of a German woman and U.S. serviceman, has dual citizenship and reportedly turned down a call-up this week to the German under-21 team.

Because the Bosnia game is a friendly, Brooks will not be cap-tied to the U.S. next week. But his decision to come into the U.S. camp is a positive sign as the U.S. tries to recruit him to the Stars & Stripes. A 6-foot-4-inch center back with promising foot skills, Brooks is expected to make his Bundesliga debut on Saturday against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Anderlecht say Sacha Kljestan called up to US national team vs. Bosnia

Although the US national team roster announcement won’t arrive until Monday, expect plenty of speculation and some names to be leaked over the weekend.

And the first has already arrived.

According to Belgian champions Anderlecht, US national team midfielder Sacha Kljestan has been called up for the qualifier versus Bosnia on Wednesday August 14 in Sarajevo.

In a roundup of internationals on their website, RSC state that Kljestan has again been selected by Klinsmann. Looks like the Belgians slipped up a little there.

So with Kljestan set for a place in midfield, will we be seeing more of a mixture in the squad, rather than just European based players next week in Bosnia? It’s too early to say, but this indicator that Kljestna is included may means the likes of Mix Diskerud and Alejandro Bedoya won’t be involved as they settle back into the season in Europe following a summer spent stateside.

But for Kljestan — given the incredible Gold Cup performances from Diskerud and Kyle Beckerman plus the emergence of player such as Joe Corona and Jose Torres — this friendly will be massive to prove how far ahead of the Gold Cup pack he really is.

Yes, Kljestan is one of the most gifted players the USA has in their pool, but he has flattered to deceive when given the chance in recent World Cup qualifiers. Okay most of his appearances have been off the bench, yet this match with Bosnia is crucial to solidify his spot as the 12th man, if you like. The 27-year-old midfielder can slot in anywhere across the middle and do a decent job but plenty of players proved they could do that at the Gold Cup.

Bosnia are a very good team, ranked 14th in the latest FIFA rankings and have huge hopes of making the World Cup next summer. This friendly will go a long way to showing the progress Klinsmann’s squad has made over the past 12 months. He may well learn much more about his squad from one game in Sarajevo, than he did during the whole of the Gold Cup campaign.

Like I said, for Kljestan and plenty of others this friendly represents a huge chance to impress. If he’s in the squad that is…

Kickoff at Asim Ferhatovic Hase Stadium on Wednesday is set for 2:30 p.m. ET (8:30 p.m. local), and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2, WatchESPN and UniMas, and on ESPN Deportes Radio. The first ever meeting against the host is the only match before 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying resumes with matches against Costa Rica on Sept. 6 in San Jose and Mexico four days later at a sold-out Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

The roster is comprised largely of European-based players who are coming off the summer break and beginning the new league campaigns.

“This is another opportunity to give ourselves a benchmark against a great opponent and one of the top teams in Europe,” said Klinsmann.

“Our European-based players are just getting started with their seasons and this gives them a chance to get going a couple weeks before our big World Cup Qualifiers. We’re also excited to bring some new faces into the Senior Team and have them start to become part of the group.”

The U.S. is currently riding a record-setting 11-match winning streak that began June 2 with a 4-3 victory against then second-ranked Germany in the Centennial Celebration Match. The streak includes three wins in World Cup Qualifying and six straight victories en route to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup championship.

Bosnia-Herzegovina is ranked No. 13 in the world, its best-ever ranking in its history, which is due to its impressive performance in European qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. After six matches, Bosnia-Herzegovina leads Group G with five wins and a draw, and holds a three-point lead over Greece. Overall, the Dragons are on an undefeated run of nine matches.

Klinsmann just passed the two-year anniversary of his tenure with the U.S. Men’s National Team and has compiled some impressive results, including a record-tying winning percentage in 2012 (.750) and a record-setting winning streak that utilized 35 different players.

ROSTER NOTES

Tim Howard is the leading cap-winner on the roster with 90 appearances.

Jozy Altidore has scored in his last four matches for the United States and is one of only six U.S. players to accomplish this feat, joining William Looby, Eric Wynalda, Brian McBride, Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan (twice). He would become the first player in history to score in five straight matches if he were to find the back of the net against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Six players on the roster appeared in all three of the USA’s wins in World Cup Qualifying in June: Altidore, Michael Bradley, Brad Evans, Howard, Eddie Johnson and Fabian Johnson.

A total of seven players were part of the Gold Cup-winning squad: Alejandro Bedoya, Edgar Castillo, Joe Corona, Mix Diskerud, Eddie Johnson, Michael Orozco Fiscal and Michael Parkhurst.

Leagues from 10 different countries are represented on the roster. Seven players come from playing in England, and five from Germany.

Five players on the roster are based in North America, with the Seattle Sounders sending the duo of Evans and Eddie Johnson and Club Tijuana contributing Castillo and Corona. Puebla defender Orozco Fiscal rounds out the group.

Evans scored the game-winning goal in the 2-1 win against Jamaica on June 7 in Kingston, the first ever road victory in qualifying against The Reggae Boyz.

Corona scored his first and second career goals for the National Team during the Gold Cup.

Having joined the squad after the group phase, Eddie Johnson scored 15 seconds after he entered the game in the 60th minute of the USA’s 5-1 win against El Salvador in the quarterfinal.

Johnson is tied for the most appearances this year for the MNT with DaMarcus Beasley, each having played in 12 matches.

Bedoya, who recently transferred to Nantes in Ligue 1 in France, also got on the scoresheet for the first time in his international career when he tallied in the 6-0 win against Guatemala on July 5 in San Diego.

Four players are in camp with the senior team for the first time: John Anthony Brooks, Cody Cropper, Aron Johannsson and Bobby Wood.

Cropper started all three matches for the U.S. at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

A native of Hawaii, Wood played in CONCACAF qualifying for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The 20-year-old 1860 Munich forward could become the second player from Hawaii ever to play for the full National Team, following Brian Ching.

Brooks has been a part of the U.S. Youth National Team program at the U-20 level. He made his debut appearance in the Bundesliga this past weekend and did so in style, scoring the game-winner in the 6-1 win for Hertha Berlin against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Johannsson has applied to FIFA for a change of association after having represented Iceland at the U-21 level. He has scored twice in as many games for AZ Alkmaar, including a penalty in the 3-2 win against Ajax on Sunday. Born in Mobile, Ala., he makes his debut in the U.S. set up and awaits the completion of the process in order to be eligible to participate in matches.

Terrence Boyd finished his first season at Rapid Vienna with 15 goals in all competitions.

With two straight clean sheets in March, Brad Guzan now has five shutouts in seven matches played in qualifying in his career, posting a 4-1-2 record.

Guzan was voted the 2013 Aston Villa Player of the Year by both players and supporters.

Danny Williams moved in the summer from Hoffenheim to Reading of the English League Championship.

Tim Ream returns to the fold for the first time since October of 2011.

Six players participated in the combined U-20/U-23 MNT camp in November of 2011 in Duisburg: Boyd, Brooks, Corona, Cropper, Diskerud and Wood.
