**Official USMNT Soccer Thread**

I don't know what to tell you man. :lol

He didn't literally mean position specific training should start as early as possible.

There's no such thing as position specific training for a 7 year old. The terminology just isn't even applicable.

For God's sake, at U8 they play 4v4 no keepers. :rollin

:lol Dude, you are so hard headed... He was literal about it.

I applied the link again, please listen... There is nothing in his tone that suggested otherwise. What he said was very succinct. There was no sarcasim or any innuendo, or anything in the way he presented what he said that would suggest otherwise.

I get if you disagree, that's fine. :lol

If you don't feel like listening again, here's what he said.

At Ajax Cruyff & Rexach one of the things they’ve always done although they might say differently at Barcelona but if you really look at it it’s not, position specific training the earlier the better.

And I hate to say it because it goes against what all people teach but when I grew up through Ajax at 12 they said you’re going to be a right fullback in practice situation even in warms ups you’re gonna play that right side all the time because you’re going to get the ball with the right feet from the center back and play it forward somehow & you’re not gonna hang out on the left side playing possession and when you lose it there’s functionality to our session all the time in all of our exercises that we do actually & that makes sense because I think the game, we have more specialist now it’s changed a little bit from Total Football fluid interchanging even Brazil right now they gotta holding midfield they play very structured now it’s different you know and he feels in order to maintain your status and become and stay on the top that you gotta create specialist in every position…

And going back to Johan Cryuff again, Johan thinks if you find a position, your coach finds a position, your clubs finds a position, if the specialist that know the game & are good coaches finds a position you gotta hone your skills in that position each & every day, each & every game & not change from one position to another which the fluid total football at one point in time was and Barcelona to a certain extent you know?

Jeez... :{ :lol

Anyway, I was one of the people championing Jurgen to be hired years ago prior to him coming on in 2011 & now I wonder if the entire program is headed in the right direction...

Could it be that it's too big a mechanism to change quickly to what Jurgen envisioned? Are there too many things working against him? Did he bite off more than he could chew?

When I look at the talent in the youth ranks compared to what has been years before, the program from top to bottom should be better than it ever has & yet the players aren't achieving the type of success one would expect.

• MNT suffered their worst finish in the gold cup last summer.
• U23 missed back to back Olympics (first time in 50 years).
• U20 didn’t win one game in the 2013 U20 World Cup.
• U17 missed U17 World Cup for the first time ever in 2013. They qualified in 2015 but they didn’t win a single game & got knocked out early.

Despite some great talent, that U23 US side looked completely out matched against Colombia & I happen to think Herzog is a decent smart coach. I know there was some organizational issues with Herzog getting his players at the start of the Rio Olympic qualification process... MLS/Garber were really slow to release players which resulted in Herzog not knowing what players he would have almost 2 weeks prior to the beginning of qualification....

We're at a cross roads my fine NT friends...

I think its a combination of all 3, with emphasis on the first question you raised

Jurgen's vision is still something that can be accomplished and I think he should be around in some capacity with the authority and power to see it through... his coaching of the MNT is another issue tho

@Ecook0808
in here! I see you bruh
You know I stay coming in when USMNT has matches etc lol...

On another note, I was super close to pulling the trigger on Galaxy season tix but games on weekends kind of killed me. Let's plan a match out! When you down here again?
Not sure when I'll be down in LA again, my friends down there are all coming up to Sac for a week and we're driving down to Santa Clara for the Colombia game and then catching the next match somewhere here in Sac.... but I def want to make it down to StubHub Center at least once or twice for a few Galaxy matches, I'll let you know if I'm around!

My man I'm not hard headed, I just actually know what I'm talking about in this area.

I listened to the podcast. Years of experience and study in the field lets me know he's saying position specific training should begin as young as possible within the scope of youth development methodology, which would mean generally starting at U10-U12. I can go into a lot more detail here if needed.

There's no such thing as position specific training for players U6-U8. It's just not a thing. It does not exist.

I can't possibly be more clear, the terminology "position specific training" does not apply to players that young. It's a nonsensical concept.

Common sense tells us all that the words, "do  _________ as much or as little as possible", is rarely if ever a literal statement. Tone and delivery are irrelevant.

To points that are often overlooked,

1) We're getting better at development but so is almost everyone else in the world, some countries at an even faster pace than we are.

2) I don't think competition results are a particularly valuable measuring stick when the data set doesn't span across many years. If the aggregate trend across our programs continues into the next decade then I'd be concerned.

If the US top athletes played soccer we would've had a couple world cups and a top 5 team.

so if soccer was the most popular sport and everyone played it you still think we would be a middle to mediocre team ?

I'm with you, you just went a little overboard there.

You're right in that any kind of growth in the talent pool will help develop a stronger senior team.

Got a pre-sale code for Copa America Centenario finals. Worth traveling across the country for a tourney that has nothing on the line?

I heard Messi and Neymar won't be in attendance. Not really worth it to me

Probably not if their teams don't make the finals. Messi has been confirmed as playing in the tournament to my knowledge. Neymar is eager to play in both this and Olympics but Barcelona are hesitant to allow him, so I think he needs to chose one or the other (probably Olympics) unless Barca eases up. Neymar also suggested just playing in half of the Copa Centenario so only time will tell.
