Wright getting a chance
(02-24) 22:43 PST Oakland -- Had he returned for another year at North Carolina, Brandan Wright would be a sophomore. A star sophomore, no doubt. Instead, he chose to enter the NBA.
Of course, being 6-foot-9 with leaping ability helps, and now Wright is on the verge of getting more playing time with the Warriors as they confront the last third of the season with less than a full squad.
Golden State plays Seattle on Tuesday night at Oracle Arena and Wright figures to get some minutes at the power-forward position. He caught the attention of coach Don Nelson in the last game against Atlanta when the rookie played a season-high 26 minutes and produced eight points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
"I think he's maybe ready now to help us a little bit," Nelson said after Sunday's practice, at which he sat back much of the time and watched Wright specifically. "He wasn't ready at training camp. Coaches have been doing a marvelous job working with him. He's probably improved as much as anybody. Let's take a look at him, see what he can do."
Wright has one obvious flaw in his game. Or rather, his post game. He speaks softly, almost sub-audibly. A listener has to lean in close to hear the young man from Nashville.
"I come to practice and try to work hard every day," he said while sitting on an exercise ball after the workout. "Just try to get ready for the opportunities in the future. The main thing is when you get an opportunity to be ready."
With center Andris Biedrins out indefinitely following an emergency appendectomy and forward Stephen Jackson hobbled with a sore left foot, the Warriors had to adjust their lineup on the front court. Thus, Wright and his 26 minutes at the No. 4 spot against Atlanta on Friday night.
"The times he gets in games this year, he's played well as a rookie," Jackson said. "The only way you're going to get confidence is by playing. With Andris out, I think he's going to get more of a chance to play. We need rebounding bad. I'm pretty sure he'll get a lot of minutes."
If and when that happens, Wright sounds ready.
"It'd be good," he said. "We've got a lot of guys (who) are injured. We need guys to step up and fill their roles. When you come in (to the league), you're never completely ready. You just adapt to your surroundings, use your talent to the best of your ability."
At a listed 205 pounds, Wright doesn't have much beef for the power-forward position. Still, that's eight or nine pounds more than he carried at the start of training camp. He won't be a bruiser or a banger, but he does have the leaping ability to be an excellent rebounder and shot-blocker near the rim.
"I don't want to lose my quickness, but getting stronger is always a goal," Wright said. "You can't really rush the process. You have to continue to work hard."
And the hard work is being noticed.
"He's been playing hard in practice, getting better every day," Nelson said. "I certainly like what I see."
Briefly: Jackson, who is getting over a bruised bone in his left heel, worked up a sweat Sunday in an individual workout and said he expects to practice today and play Tuesday against the Sonics. ... Biedrins reported for work, but only to pose for the official team photo. No word on when he will be able to return.
Hope B Wright can crack into the regular rotation with this opportunity.
Good to see Stephen Jax may come back to play next game.

I kinda like it, but not really. The mixture of the early 90's Warriors Logo with the mid 70's Warriors Patch on the back throws me off a bit. A little nostalgic and tacky with the shiny cheerleader stripes on the sleeves. But I'll probably cop for the collection. Eh..
