McHale: Garnett's Salary Kept Wolves From Adding Other Stars
Former Timberwolves executive Kevin McHale was at Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday night and discussed with FanHouse his time with Kevin Garnett in Minnesota.

Garnett admitted last month that he wishes he would have pushed for a trade earlier than when he did. McHale and the Timberwolves traded him to the Celtics after the 2006-07 season.

McHale says the huge contract extension that Garnett signed in 1997 hampered the team from building a proper supporting cast.

"That's always a tough thing," said McHale. "He signed that huge contract, and that huge contract was somewhat prohibiting the team from going out and finding other people (due to Garnett eating up so much of the salary cap). So it was a two-way street. He did the right thing. The money was offered. He took it. It was right before the new collective bargaining agreement."

The NBA locked out in 1998-99, in part because of Garnett's contract, and McHale admitted that Minnesota could have added "three or four players" to help the forward had he signed a maximum contract like the ones currently begin offered.

Yeah that contract was the reason I believe Garnett couldn't get any help.

Being a Philly fan, I say we draft Cousins (I know about his anger issues) but his talent is NBA superstar level and if put into the right situation, i can see him being our franchise leader for years (Same with Favors but for i now I'll say Cousins)

A starting line-up of:
Jrue/Williams
Iggy/Kapano
Young or Nocioni
Brand (Hopefully we get him traded off to a whole different time-zone smfh) & Spieghts
Cousins/Hawes

What do ya think? Should we draft Turner or Bring in Cousins/Favors?
This is basically a trade before another trade/trades happen. This means Thad or Iggy will be traded because Nocioni will be getting minutes off the bench. He's the perfect Philly hard worker type player we needed since we traded Reggie Evans last year for bum ++$ Kapono. Considering Turner was in our locker room yesterday talking about which number he's going to choose, I'm pretty sure you guys can please stop listening to Chad Ford. I'm just so relieved I won't have to see Dalembert goaltend like 8 shots a game anymore. Not sure what this means for Speights and Jason Smith though since they're kind of similiar to Hawes.
Wow...i didn't hear about that....That changes everything then. I just want Brand &/or Iggy out and bring in Turner/Favors/Cousins and sign a major Free agent this summer. That'll be a perfect summer

Was this a salary cap move for Philly or did they really want Nocioni and Hawes ?
Cavs reach out to Paul, Kidd about Scott
As Byron Scott establishes himself as the clear frontrunner for the Cleveland Cavaliers’ coaching vacancy, team executives have reached out to two of LeBron James’(notes) friends – Chris Paul(notes) and Jason Kidd(notes) – to discuss their former coach.

Cavaliers general manager Chris Grant and assistant GM Lance Blanks made an initial round of calls to New Jersey Nets and New Orleans Hornets officials to research Scott shortly after the firing of Mike Brown, but are now digging deeper as they inch closer to making him a formal offer.

The Cavs also had every one of the Nets’ 2002 and ’03 playoff games, including the Finals, sent to them for review, a source said.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo was the No. 1 choice of owner Dan Gilbert, but Izzo’s belief that James won’t re-sign with the Cavaliers was mostly responsible for him turning down a $30 million package.

Scott had a combative history with Kidd while he coached the Nets, and ultimately Kidd played a part in the coach’s 2004 dismissal one season after the team made consecutive trips to the NBA Finals. Kidd had issues with Scott’s preparation, but never had a personal problem with him. Still, it seemed doubtful Kidd would blast Scott to Blanks, who was making those calls.

As for Paul, he’s an immense supporter of Scott and never wanted him fired in New Orleans last season. Paul played his first four NBA seasons for Scott and remains close to him. Paul’s personal endorsement to James has gone a long way for Scott’s candidacy with the Cavaliers.

How quickly Scott would leap at a Cavaliers offer is still unclear, because he remains mostly interested in trying to get the Los Angeles Lakers job should Phil Jackson decide to retire after the Finals. Scott is a candidate for the Los Angeles Clippers job, too. Southern California is home for him, and he’s hesitant to jump at a Cavs offer without fully exploring the possibility of staying west.

Take this for what it's worth but... a Minneapolis radio host that's been in Minnesota for years and has connections will post on the radio message board every so often. Usually only when he has information. He posted this earlier today:

Later on people were throwing out ideas and he said Not Lebron, Not Bosh, Not Wade, Not CP3, Not Josh Smith, Not Danny Granger, Not J.Johnson, Not Rudy Gay. Some were speculating that it's either Melo (Nuggets wanting to blow it up), Pau Gasol (seeing as how they might bring Bosh in), Amare (dissatisfied with the Suns), Yao, etc.

We'll see in five days I guess.

Im interested to see what the Wolves can do.

Maybe Rubio would come over if they can get one of the leagues best

Not to be picky, because we need a star or semi-star in here desperately, but I hope it's not Amare or Gilbert Arenas.

And the reason Pau Gasol was brought up because of all the rumors about Bosh/Bynum trade and also Rubio might love playing with another Spanish player in Pau.

Your move Kahn.

please let whatever this is happen!!!! I'll be listening to KFAN lots now

The thing is...we've all got different definitions of "the game's best" and "upper echelon player" (a term the guy used later).

It'd be a major buzzkill if he considered guys like Monta Ellis or Andre Iguodala in that category. I wish he'd provide an example of a player that is similar in quality so we know we're not setting ourselves up for disappointment.

And to answer Bigmike's question, 1.) can they really play two PFs together, despite their talent? and 2.) how would Kobe, Pau and Bosh be able to keep them under the cap?

He could very well not be the guy, it's just speculation right now.

I doubt it'll be Yao. Highly doubt it.

He's one of the most loyal dudes out there, and would def. resign after his contract ended. it'd be a shame if their organization didnt feel the same way, even though hes always injured.

Morey must be really confident about Bosh...

Btw, i dont see why a Pau and Bosh wont work.

The rumor for bosh was the lakers trading bynum for him. The lakers are already over the cap they would just have to pay even more $$$$ on the luxury tax

gasol plays center for the lakers alot so I don't see that as a problem

^What do you mean?

If LA can pull off a S&T with Raptors (and if contracts match), why wouldnt it work salary cap wise?

But yao? That doesn't seem right. I would hope it's Melo. They don't have a real chance at all. Why not blow it up? They can't add anyone plus if you trade you may have to give up one of their top/important guys. I say wolves save your money and go after melo now or next off-season.

I have a feeling this story/rumor will either be much ado about nothing, or the "one of the game's best" will be someone like Iguodala .

You might be right about it being Iguodala.
