The machine?
I knew absolutely nothing about LOTR when I saw a trailer for it in front of Little Nicky, and some dude behind me was like...Damn! They making 3 of them? Must be good.
That's it. That's all I knew. Didn't pay not no mind to it, until I was at the flea market a couple years later, saw a bootleg VHS of Fellowship of the Ring there and thought...I heard of that, 5 bucks...why not? Watched it with my sis who almost exclusively likes the most ignorant ****, and we both thought it was awesome and needed to see the 2nd whenever it came out.
No machine made me like LOTR. There was no Avatar-ish, okay...I gotta keep reminding myself this looks cool, and that's the point. It was just a damn good movie, that breezed by even though it was 3 hours long. That didn't limit it's imagination by what it could show on a screen, but never stopped being grounded with real characters you knew and cared about immediately.
Every scene mattered, and every moment got nailed, and you never knew what was coming next, but it felt right. The Balrog and you shall not pass. The one ring. The ringwratiths, the elves, the dwarves, Sauron, that music, Galadriel, that orc fight. Fantasy in every sense of the word. And you believed all of it. You were right there with them every step of the way.
I'd seen Willow and Costner Robin Hood and Braveheart...and hell even Dragonheart and Dungeons & Dragons movie :x This made all of those feel ancient. It's just pure genius. When you watch it, you don't quite understand how a person or any group of people could've made it. It feels like it was always here and it'll always be here, and the next 2 never quite recaptured that purity, but you gotta be outside of your Armond White mind to not appreciate LOTR.
**** is 20 hours long and I can still get caught up watching em when they're on TBS or TNT.
