Watched a couple of movies this week
Patriot's Day 6.0/8
I've said it before...Peter Berg + Mark Wahlberg, and I'm in. Loved Lone Survivor and also Deep Water Horizon. Lone Survivor is the crown jewel of the Berg/Wahlberg pairing, but DWH and Patriot's Day are probably neck and neck following.
We all know the story of the tragic events that unfolded 4 years ago at the Boston Marathon. Even with knowing what was going to happen, it was still an intense movie. The Watertown shootout scene was gripping and true edge-of-your seat excitement.
What got me at the end was hearing the story from some of the survivors and seeing them running the marathon past the location where the bomb went off. Not to mention, Berg perfectly punctuating the movie with the David Ortiz speech at Fenway. I just thought the movie was really well done. If you're looking for a solid film to watch, PD is it.
Silence...MY rating 4/8. However, I can see why it was critically acclaimed and was deserving of the praise it got.
I knew nothing about the movie other than it was a Scorsese film with a solid cast (Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson, and Adam Driver.) I'm thinking, "hmmm...going to be an epic film along the lines of The Departed!" Nope, not at all. Might be the slowest movie you'll ever watch in your life. 3 hours of almost straight dialogue. From reading about the film after I finished watching, I learned that this was kind of a pet project of Scorsese that was about 20+ years in the making. He seemed to make this film for the love of movie making. True movie buffs will find the entertainment with this film, but for my short attention span, it just wasn't for me. That being said, I did make it through the whole move without falling asleep, but I did start messing around on my phone about an hour in. The acting is top-notch and from a historical context, it was interesting to see how Catholicism was viewed in other countries around the world when the religion/Christianity was seen as "taboo."
Anyways, my rating is low just because it didn't hold my attention. That shouldn't take away from how solid of a project this actually was.
