I’m a huge fan of Super 8. I thought JJ Abrams really knocked that one out of the park. I’m a sucker for that group of kid friends on a mission sub genre though.

Goonies, Stand by Me, Sandlot, Attack the Block, Adventures in Babysitting, etc

Check out Vampires v. Brooklyn on Netflix. Solid attention to that sub-genre.

Flame suite ...

I think Imma start a bash my favorite movie segment.

Super 8

Movie is borderline tolerable. The 3rd act doest makeup how trash the other two acts were. Super blah.

Any suggestion?
JJ Abrams is just a rehashing/copying hack of a director.

Good thing Super 8 had Spielberg on board because I'm typically not the biggest fan of Abrams either.

It was like a perfect blend of that mid 20th century sci-fi, the Goonies formula, ET/Close Encounters. Movie magic especially for kids. A lot of nostalgia for adults. I had the chance to see it at a drive-in that summer too so it was perfect.

I Abrams did well with the first few seasons of Lost too 🤷‍♂️

I don't credit anything about Lost to Abrams either.

Didn't he create it? He's the one credited from switching it from a predominantly Lord of the Flies/Cast Away type mashup which it was originally going to be and gave it that whole mysterious and metaphorical angle. He's the one who pitched the entire Hatch and 'others' idea.

What am I missing?

For me, Baby Driver is not horrible not a classic .... its just a good flick and that's where the buck stops. Nothing new and nothing exiting.

Lets start with character development.. although is a movie and we dont need it, it usually helps. And since he took a half *** attempt to explain why Miles was always listening to music he could of at least gone a step further to explaing more. An orphan kid that became a prodigy at car stealing and driving .... how, why, etc .... maybe this is cool for some but for me .... kid is involved in a high risk crime organization with people getting murker and its whatever??? Naaaa ....

Where the **** did Doc come from??? They try to make him seem so well connected yet he hired hot heads. Not to mention he didn't use the same crew twice but yet here we are with the oddest least chemistry group he had?

Then you have Joe ... handicap deaf dude fostering Miles ... I guess this is what makes the movie special??? FOH ....

And after a few weeks a baby sitter is risking it all for an unknown base on the lame chemistry they built on scene?

Lastly ... its hard to feel sorry for a guy thats obviously witnessing murders of innocent people is also a murderer etc and get a 15 year bid with eligibility of parole at 5 year.

Some of this is nitpicking but **** that goes from good to great. This is not a modern day classic and its not genious and its not new .....

Just a more entertaining Driver for me ..

Again not bad movie but way overrated!

PS Spitballing right now as im busy but these are some amonst other things.

Nah he didn't create it.

He's the one that suggested a bunch of mysteries and provided no outcomes,0 solutions or answers

The execution of those ideas were all Lindelof and Cuse.

You should read the Lindelof interviews. He basically sucks off JJ for his contributions early in getting it off the ground and his overall impact before leaving

Crediting him with nothing seems wild.

"Well first and foremost, I think that he sort of really cast the show. I was there, and I'd love to say I had a tremendous amount of input, and I did, but I do think that from the directorial point of view and the star-making and the ensemble building, all that stuff, I think that J.J. just had a tremendous amount of confidence."

Super 8 is to slow and when they figure out what was going on it went from 0 to 100 way to quick .... the adventure/thrill/problem solving/etc was lacking and IMO comparing it to Goonies is not it.

Im not even going into some aspects of the movies like why were the military weapons going crazy? How come there were dudes running in the streets running aimless and shooting aimless .... but again things like that are expected when watching a movie ... and thats not my complaint.. it was to slow and could not be saved by the time everything started kicking in ... just another overrated movie.

Group of quirky, outsider pre-teens attempting to solve a mystery.

Have you ever seen Goonies?

That's the similarity.

This is a crazy amount of nitpicking hate :lol

I have. Its what those guys had to do. Given JJ was the big name director and was still doing/connected to Alias at the time.

But sure give him credit for casting, ensemble building, and star-making (I bet he was mostly responsible for Shannon and Boone tho). That was a part of the show too.

The reason I say comparing Super 8 to Goonies is not it is because Goonies is that much better than Super 8. Tolerable movie with nothing worthwhile or memorable.

Is not though .. cause I'm not saying the movie sucks ... but these are the things that take a movie from good to great ....
To me the movie isn't good enough or great enough for me to care about those things you listed.

They did enough character building, had enough chemistry, made enough sense heist wise for me to suspend belief and not care about getting more of it or explaining more stuff.
One dude said it was a modern day classic ... come on fam. Again highly overrated.
Well ok its not that.

But I've always seen it as a movie that a lot of ppl like for good reason. Not overrated. Let alone highly.
