CP1708, recently gave me a heads up about this thread so I thought I'd contribute. Other than the obvious suggestions for films to watch, I suggest
True Romance. I've been going back and forth reading screenplays and watching the films that are developed afterwards. Even though it's not a "great" film, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The final product was very, very close to the original script. Screenplay was written by Quentin Tarentino and directed by Tony Scott. The cast is real strong as well. It was released after Tarentino's first major hit (
Reservoir Dogs), and you can see a lot early influences that carried to his future work.
I've also started watching some of Federico Fellini's films, notably
La Dolce Vita and
8½. La Dolce Vita basically overtook
Girl on the Bridge as my favorite foreign film of all time, but it's tough for me to recommend because it's 3 hours long and to be frank, neorealism isn't for everyone.
If any of you wanted to nice foreign flick to watch though, Ingmar Bergman's
The Seventh Seal is great and more recently I re-watched
Y Tu Mamá También (a coming of age film) which is solid.
