Sure, that's often the response about movies adapted from books, but there's plenty of exceptions. Like I said, Silence of Lambs, Devil Wears Prada, the Godfather.
But in a lot of cases, people say the books are better than the movies because they are. It's definitely true in the case of the Harry Potter movies/books.

As I said before, I was giving my honest/unbiased opinion. I didn't grow up on harry potter or wait for the books to come out.Man, is there ANY movie out that has a book form... that people DON'T say 'Read the book. It's better" about?I feel like that's just a standard response. Like forever and always, if there'ss ever a movie that comes out after a book... "Read the book. It's better." Like if someone actually has experienced both, and someone ELSE asks for an opinion on the movie, and that first person just said "Enh, you don't HAVE to read the book. Just watch the movie," the rest of the community of folks who have experienced both would shun him.
I wasn't saying that he should just read the book and chalk it up. I said that he should read the books before watching the films.
In regards to your first question, I'd answer with fight club. Both the movie and book are great.
Just for kicks, here are some media that are based on books that I'd recommend to someone.
That I'd tell them to skip the book if he doesn't feel like reading.

Most of you on here are probably way too young for the Cheech & Chong movies, but the first 2 or 3 are worth a watch if you have some time. They're completely ridiculous and super dated in some ways, but good for a few laughs nevertheless.

If we're just talking movies based on a book, then Goodfellas also comes to mind. A lot of the dialogue comes straight from the book it was based on, Wiseguy, but the movie is far superior.

Finally caught up on this thread.
Don't know what to make of that trailer for the new season of Dexter.
It looks promising but they've fooled me before.
As much as Dexter has fallen off in recent seasons I will be tuning in on June 30th. I just can't flat out quit a show.
Noble, Grimm was renewed for a third season; should premiere in August like season 2 did last year.
Love me some Grimm.
Might watch Fast & Furious 6 sometime this week.

It looks promising but they've fooled me before.
As much as Dexter has fallen off in recent seasons I will be tuning in on June 30th. I just can't flat out quit a show.

Heard this.. But I haven't read the book so I can't really speak on it.. Same goes for the godfather, which was also based on a novel (with the same name)

I seen Searching For Sugar Man recommended on my on demand. Didn't highlight it to get the gist of it but I'll peep after seeing that trailer.
They delved too deep in to his character and made him relatable enough to me that he wasn't really a villain. He was just doing him. Leo's part was all a revenge story at the end of it.

I have to assume one flew over the coukoo's nest is better than the book. Simply because it's one of the best movies ever made. No exaggeration. Great all time villain. One of the best ensemble casts ever. Jack at his best. Incredible ending. What else can u ask for

I don't know if anyone else caught it, but Behind the Candelabra was phenomenal. It's a shame no studio picked it up but I can see why. It wouldn't have made very much money.
Douglas was amazing. My knowledge of Liberace was minimal before watching the movie. All I knew was that he was a flamboyant pianist. I didn't know he was gay, but it is far from surprising. He and Damon had great screen chemistry, and it was fun to watch Damon's transformation into just another one of Lee's boys. I was honestly kind of surprised both men did so well. It's easy to get slander from a film like this because both act so flamboyant at times, and the sexual scenes can be quite explicit, but it never feels artificial.
The supporting cast was also superb. Speaking of transformation, man Rob Lowe was flawless. I might get chuckles but that might be Oscar nominee worthy. I LOVED him. I don't know if it was the makeup or his acting, but he brought a whole other layer of authenticity to the film. Dan Akroyd was also very good in his role as Liberace's lawyer. He plays a douche bag very well.
I think I knew beforehand that Liberace died of AIDS, but I liked how the film handled it. It was very sad. If this film did nothing else for me, it brought to light the talent that Liberace had, and how he and his lovers were all lonely trying to find solace in sex.
