Whole theme of this thing has been universal values, unity and stuff so it's why they've invited artists, singers and athletes from all over outside of France to take part in it.

That sort of thing has been big for the French since the Universal declaration of rights of man and of citizens was published during the French revolution.

They should’ve just done the walk-through ceremony from the Arc de Triomphe down Champs-Élysées. Bus all the athletes to Trocadero and watch the Eiffel Tower light show and call it a day.
