Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Imma just say it in case it hasn't been said already.

Meg > Tory. Don't care about that Canadian leprechaun. Starting to think NT might have an issue with women rappers.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm on that Sean Price type of time when it comes to women rappers but mostly because I just don't like the content and messaging that they're sending out to impressionable young girls.. I will say that both Meg and Glorilla are the only two mainstream women rappers who I can listen to because they have elite level delivery and mic presence... I also agree with you about Tory, mans made the most derivative, mid music I've ever heard in my life but the way people talk about him, you'd think he was making Luther Vandross level rnb.. idk why cats are so enamored with these Canadians Drake/Tory.

Just now listening to this new Tyler joint, this sounds really damn good.

Yeah, it's solid. Didn't expect another project so soon.

I didn't hear the Kendrick in it all that someone else stated.

I have no issue with your dislike of their content.

My only question would be does the same standard ring true for male artists rapping about degeneracy?

Flex is saying Ambassador Shyne is sending goons after him over his comments

Hip hop is like a soap opera
Flex be lying though.

100% I've been very vocal in my disdain for modern mainstream hip-hop both male and female. I've been saying we need a hip-hop culture reset for a minute, at this point we are literally championing degeneracy. The women are bragging about essentially being prostitutes while the men joyfully rap about murdering other black men. Even with this Lil Durk stuff, you got folks more upset with the alleged snitch than the actual alleged murderers. I'm pretty consistent when it comes to voicing my displeasure with the degeneracy running rampant within hip-hop culture at the moment whether it's male or female.

As long as you're consistent.

So do yall actually hop in the whip and put on meg or glo or any of these chicks? Not hating cause they doing they thang and from what little I've heard the music doesn't sound terrible but yall actually vibing to these songs? I just can't do it, can't relate to the subject matter at all and honestly it seems a little weird for grown men to be listening to this type of content. Idk, never could get in to female rappers even back in the day.

I give them a listen just to make sure it's something I'm not missing out on.

Gorilla is pretty close to a rapper I would normally listen to. Meg talks about a lot of sexually vulgar stuff that should cater to women though.

Beyond that, I haven't really listened to to much Ice Spice, Latto, etc.

Can't speak for the other guys but when I say I can listen to glo and meg, that just means I won't skip their songs when it comes on the radio or a playlist  I don't actively search for their songs to play em.

I rock with female rappers. Always have. Growing up we listened to everybody in my house, so the women rappers got their play as well. MC Lyte, Salt n Pepa, Lauryn Hill, Lil Kim, Da Brat, Missy, Eve, Mia X, Queen Pen, Foxy, Gangsta Boo, Trina, LaChat, Vita, Charlie Baltimore, Rah Digga...list goes on. Some are better than others but I got no problem saying I am a fan of many of them.

Now fast forward to modern day. I feel like there are hella more acts. But some are obviously the cream of the crop (Nicki, Cardi), then you go the upper mid tier Megan, Glo, Sexxy Red, Latto, (City Girls once upon a time). The up and coming acts (Monaleo, Doechii etc) and then you got the joints you just dont take seriously (Ice Spice , Saweetie'nem).

My wife listens to a lot of female rap so Im constantly hearing it, some I enjoy and some I dont really care for. I think its ok to be critical of female rappers. Its hard to do so in this day and age with all the PC talk and you have to really be careful in how you word your critique because then people will think you have something against women. But as long as the conversation is done in good faith it can happen.

In my opinion the content these chicks are rapping about aint too too far off from what was being said back then. Trina and Lil Kim definitely had some WILD lyrics in the 90s/2000's, but they was just talkin they shxt. So when I hear the female rappers of today talk bout how they finessin dudes or how good they P is or other sexual exploits it doesnt ring an alarm because ALL artists talk about this.

The content in women rap is by far a lot less scathing than the things we have to hear men rap about. I just feel a lot of people have certain expectations of women overall, and when they see/hear them talk about vulgar topics (things that everyone talks about anyways) it turns them away, which at the end of the day is perfectly fine, but I think its silly to have this double standard when ppl dont trip off what the guys be rappin about.

When you refer to Nicki and Cardi as cream of the crop are you referring just popularity and influence? I ask this because Cardi dropped one album half a decade ago and she didn't write anything on it...

Speaking of that, most of these modern day women rappers have men writing for them so it's literally just labels picking pretty faces and putting them in a booth.

Edit: just finished reading the rest of your post and there's no way you can say what they rap about isn't a big deal considering that their target audience is young women. This is why I say fans are just as culpable as the artists. Just because you grew up listening to music you weren't supposed to be hearing at the time, doesn't make it right .. we've been so desensitized to the degeneracy that we got grown men saying that rapping glorifying prostitution to their young female audiences isn't a big deal.

No.

But when Friday hits, and that Don Julio is opened we need the yambs on go.

Tyler's project overall is t for me but definitely want to got to the tour. I think the album would go crazy in concert and from what I've seen, he's a great performer.

I definitely have a few Glo songs on my gym playlist. Doesn't bother me at all. I think some of yall looking too deep into it lol

Got a few Cardi songs too but those are usually the ones where she's a feature.

My bad I should’ve been more clear, but when I said “cream of the crop” Im speaking specifically on popularity/influence/sales. Nicki and Cardi are in a tier of their own. When we get to talking talent/skill the list shifts quite a bit.

Im glad you mentioned men writing their lyrics. Thats why its always been funny to me cuz a lot of ppl down female rappers when some of they favorite male rappers are the ones writing they music.

And Im speaking solely on adult men having an issue on what the ladies are rapping about in terms of their personal listening preferences as that is how this whole convo originated….When you talking bout younger audiences and being impressionable thats a whole separate convo detailing access to media and parenting preferences. Not what I was gettin at in my post.

Ok my apologies brother. Yeah I agree that sexualization has always been apart of women's raps but those same ladies would still give you joints like this where they just spitting and flowing...

Kim gets thrown into these topics a lot and her image she displayed plays a huge part in that but she was an MC at heart and most of her music was not about sex and that goes for most of the ladies you listed in your original post.

Eve had substance. Not sure if Kim or Fox did. Not going to act like them spitting mafioso bars are less degenerate than the sexualized raps.

eye just think the main difference is that you don’t need to jump on a man’s song these days and now dudes feel left out.
