Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Richman’s buzz started when yo worked with Brent Fiyaz and some local rapers…Then he came out with his biggest songs which sounded like a lot of the r n b/rap mixtape music at the time

Alot of his album wasn’t like that tho (mostly techno, electronic n dance music) so that may be why he said he’s not hip hop..But it’s obvious the r n b n rap lane got him the most attention and success so I’m not surprised he’s going back to that after his statement…The money for him is in hip hop even if he doesn’t want to admit it

I always said that record sounded like a gentrified Brent Fiyaz

Yeah I think this is a better way to look at it. Its less about him being hip-hop and that some successful pop, r&b, etc has a hip-hop influence.

The same reason Beyonce submitted Cowboy Carter and 3 songs off of it to all the Country categories. Dude didn't say he didn't want to be associated with it.

Completely different situations. When did Beyonce explicitly say she wasn’t a country artist and didn’t want to be “boxed in”? And she was snubbed from the CMAs. Again, make whatever music you want but don’t submit it for the damn Grammys if you don’t want to be associated with the genre

Gotta give that title to Boldy.
Dude been releasing fire albums like every other week.
Le$ has been at it since the Blog Era. He drops just as much if not more than Boldy and even makes his own beats. It’s not a competition, both are prolific. Big fan of both.

Saying I’m not hip-hop and I'm a singer doesn’t mean I don’t want to be associated with hip-hop.. He says he grew up on it so the influence is there. He's just saying thats he's does other music.

Beyonce’s has submissions for all of this years Grammy Country categories (Cowboy Carter, 16 Carriages, II Most Wanted and Texas Hold ’Em). All this while saying Cowboy Carter "ain’t a Country album".

why didn't she submit it to the grammy's "beyonce" category then? obviously it's a country album.

She's not a country artist. Thats her point. She can make country a country album, an R&B album, a Dance album etc. She doesn't want to be boxed in. Which was the point in saying that (just like dude did).

HankHill HankHill Words have meaning. He could’ve easily said I’m hip hop, rnb, pop, etc. but instead choose to single out one genre he absolutely didn’t want to be exclusively associated with or “boxed in” as he put it. His words, not mine or yours.

Agreed. Which is why he corrected himself when the initial words didn't convey the meaning he meant. Problem solved. What the concern?

He dumb, why not just add the "I'm a singer" part at the end of the not a hip-hop artist tweet?

Freudian slips happen all the time. My comments are directed more to the industry versus the individual. For some reason he was compelled to say and even double down in the clarifying tweet on not being “solely” a hip hop artist. I’m curious how his biases and prejudices towards hip hop formed. Nothing about his music (which I like mind you) sounds inherently hip hop. The only thing tying him to the genre are his songs genre tag and his decision to submit only to hip hop categories. Both things he had full control over.
