Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Cole been selling more albums than any rapper besides drake and kendrick recent years. I dont personally like his music but if hes selling out arenas on big tours and selling albums like that a lot of ppl must like him

How else would you decide who ran rap this year? By how often you hear them and how often people are talking about. I think Future had a good year but I didn't hear about him or his music nearly as much as Kendrick's. I also heard a lot of people talk about those three albums and how rushed they were and not liking more than one album.

In 98, DMX was everywhere and everyone was talking about him.

In 02, Nelly was everywhere and everyone was talking about him.

Decided by the ears of people who ONLY listen to mainstream or commercial music? I don’t value the opinion of people who only listen to songs because of popularity.

People who have a broad range > people who listen to commercial/radio stuff

We taking the opinions of people who don’t even decipher songs and have short attention spans?

Over the “minority” who really sit back and study most rappers? Nah, it don’t work like that

Tyga could easily be Big Sean if he wasn’t such an Un-likeable clown. Wale is more talented lyrically than Sean....but less marketable, less likeable and swears he’s more talented than he actually is.

I still argue that B.o.B. should be where Big Sean is. He lost his mind chasin' money and pop fame tho

Cole lost me after he made a song about a wet dream and then made a dumb video about it

I don't know why he's so popular

His music IMO isn't as good as Kendrick, Sean, Wale, or Drake...it's just boring and has no replay value

He really needs to get out of his bubble and start working with other people

Imo Cole music is like the soundtrack to the average dude's life. Just regular dude from down the street thoughts and feelings.

Ehhh, that type of music doesn't sell today. I don't see what they could have done and how they would have made money off them.
It sells if you present it properly and it's the artists true vision. There are still guys saying something who sell records. Def Jam just isn't interested in artist development since like you said it's much easier to sell a Lil Pump than a KRIT and takes much less effort.

Man, I been a huge Cole fan since like '09. Saw the dude live like 6 times, but I can't disagree with this.

That last album was a snoozefest. Last project I really enjoyed from him was probably Born Sinner. Not sure if I really liked it, or forced myself to since I was such a Stan at the time.

As others have said, it's a shame too, because he has so many loosies that are classics. I stand my FNL being his best project.

Big Sean top 5. I decided was aight but if he dropped another dark sky paradise this wouldn't even be a debate. This metro tape gone be hard

Surburbanites relate to Drake more, that’s the ONLY reason he’s the most popular rappers. Hence, he appeals to Whites and uppity black folks.

Back in the 80s/90s raps reach usually only extended to the middle class areas.

Once the suburbs and other transitionings happened, that’s when lanes for dudes like Drake opened.

If rap were strictly in the pockets of the slums, ghettos, and middle class areas like it use to be, there would be no Drake.

Rap/Hip Hop needs a subgenre strictly for folks from the suburbs.

I like ghetto rap plight music, I can’t rock with suburb-Drake raps.

There’s no other rapper whos benefitted more from building an aesthetic and image than Cole

His content is not even close to his. ****** praise him as this lyrical savant who has so much depth on his raps when really he’s drake with the content except he sprinkles some basic hot takes abt politics and police brutality and boom

How you’re perceived is all abt image and aesthetic

Sean gotta be the most overrated rapper in terms of “technical rapping ability”. He’s a pop rapper. People are trying to paint him as some lyricist. I truly don’t understand it.

don't let Big Sean's effortless flow fool you into thinking he's not solid on a technical level.. this always got Mase haters outta pocket.

Hate when people just come up with statements out of the blue becauss of disagreements. Nobody said Cole was trash.
Not sure you why you quoted my post twice, but I never said anyone in here ever said that. I said the statements in here make it seem like that's how they feel towards both those rappers.

THIS guy is really the best lyricist at the moment

But his group couldn’t capitlize on a song that organically got 11mil views :smh:

Youtube views meant little to me soon as I figured out Kevin Gates was doin numbers in the 100 millions :lol
