Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Puff, Hov and X. They tried to put X in the Pac slot early on, because he embodied that familiar conviction, vulnerability & sex appeal for the ladies, and passion, but instead of filling a void, the dog dug his own hole. His rise was ridiculous.
Puff????

Naw ..... you tripping ....

DMX and Jay .....

X was even doing movies ....

Drugs did him then and now.

Bad Boys ... not Puffy ....

Mack
Mase
Faith
Lil Kim
112
Black Rob
Shyne

And who was over all of that, dancing all in the videos, on the magazine covers, cutting the small checks, overseeing the production, the face of the entire movement? Puff, Puff Daddy, P-Diddy, Diddy, whatever he was going by those days.

Are you not reading the question ....

But lets put it like this, besides Lik Kim none of thrn bums made anything that out up numbers ....

If anything you had weat coast and south rap making a major move.

Snoop
Juvenile
Hotboys
Outcast

But to say superstars....

No one like Jay Z and DMX ....

However things were so close that we can start putting a bunch of names from Ja, to Lil Wayne to Eminem etc.

Puff was no major star ...

How you argue about Puff's buzz?

Him and Made was murdering the radio and videos. Albums was selling 5-10 mil. Didn't No Way Out a grammy also? That's when ODB ran on stage.

The question is, Did YOU read the question? Puff rose into a superstar position after BIG's death in a major way. We're not even talking about Mase's debut album. You can deny all you want. It's not even about liking the guy. He was everywhere for a hot minute.

98 was the biggest year of puffs career

Id argue that run he had was and will be unmatched.

Music, movies... he was THAT guy
DMX's run from 98-03' with 5 #1 albums and doing movies is truly untouchable (Year of the Dog was #2 and his was clearly on the decline at that point). RIP to one of the best to ever do it, guys energy was unreal. Just wish I'd have gotten to see him once live.

This **** must be region dependent.... because Puff was not sounding anywhere in GA (South) not Cali .....

DMX was all over the place ....

Places that were only playing

Scareface
8Ball
UGK
Outcast
GoodieMob etc

All played DMX ....

Cali DMX was alll over followed by Jay Z as far as eastcoast rapper.

During that time I heard more Missy Elliot. Method. Busta rhymes than I did Puff in the west coast for sure.

So yeah pull numbers and pass them like he was a superstar but like I said ... it must be region because dude wasnt it ....

Plus Puff was not in movies and branching out like DMX . so no the next super star after Pac and Big was X not Puff ... not even close.

Dudes here pulling up singles data and trying to elevated Puff is crazy to me. Thats not to say he didn't do a lot for the industry and perhaps all his SOLO albums were banging in NYC ... but outside of featurea or Collabs or getting on getting on videos ... i dont know.

One said that BadBoy was cutting into Roc A Fellas wave when BadBoy was already established had a major following and had talented artists.

I didn't even want to argue that **** ....
