School Me NT Vol:External Hard Drives

Looking for a 320-500gb HD. Needs to be portable/small, great for backups and quickly transfer videos ranging from 6gb-18gb. I'm positive that when I get the HD it won't have 320gb etc so how much should I expect it to have? A 1tb HD has like 931gb of space, how much gb should I expect for a 320/500 HD?

Suggestions please or thoughts on these HDs? Any help would be much appreciated.

Western digital, mine is going 4 years strong. Survived multiple power outadges. Desktop version not a portable version. My 320gb drive 294 of it is usable

Seegate is supposed to be top noch too.

one of those two brands is your best bet.

Damn I thought I'd have at least 305gb. What's the biggest transfer you've performed on it and how long did it take.

I was actually looking at one just a second ago. It looks okay but I'm hearing their backup features don't work on macs. Something about encrypting then it corrupts the files that are transfering.

If you going to put information in a hdd, iomegea is the only brand to look at. All of there external hdd enclosure is made out of steel or aluminium. Never plastic like WD or Seagate. Great if you have a Macbook with firewire or any laptop with firewire and you they also offer lifetime warranties on there products.

i mostly use it to put my music on, i.e. download albums to desktop, extract, copy to external, delete from my desktop, drag to itunes.
but my largest transfer was 7gbs/7000pics a few weeks back, i THINK it took like 30-45 min? i dont remember, but theyre quick. i think now the portables are just as fast as the non-portables. if you plan on leaving it connected all the time then dont get a portable, they dont have fans or a power supply you plug into a wall socket.

i think the western digital drives as well as the sea gates are compatible with mac, they just need to be reformatted to work.
this one is mac ready but i dont know if it has that backup feature youre talking about

Yes firewire gives you a faster transfer rate up to 800mbits than USB 2.O that 480mbits. Let me extract to what i said, no they actually do not give you lifetime warranty for buy there hardrive just 3yrs which is still pretty good than seagate and WD. Also don't buy it from Best Buy, here's a link to from another store i like to buy my products and they sell it for less.

If you want you can go to your local best buy store print out the one you want from bandh, and ask for a price match. Also Keep in mind, if your running windows 7 64bit this hardrive would not work unless you find some kind of 3rd party software for you to mount the hardrive. It only works on win7 32bit. If you have a Apple computer you have nothing to worry about time machine will take care of everything for you.
