DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Kyle Singler scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half, and No. 6 Duke bounced back from its first loss by beating St. John's 80-71 on Saturday.

Nolan Smith added 16 points for the Blue Devils (7-1). They scored 17 straight points in the first half, then used a big run in the second to claim their NCAA-record 73rd straight nonconference victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

.J. Kennedy scored 18 points to lead the Red Storm (6-1). The last non-ACC team to beat the Blue Devils there made things interesting late, reeling off 10 straight points to cut Duke's lead to 54-50 on Dwight Hardy's layup with about 10 minutes left.

But Lance Thomas hit a jumper, Jon Scheyer hit two free throws and Singler-- who was 3-for-15 shooting at that point--hit a 3-pointer during the late 14-2 run that put them back in control.

Singler got hot just in time for Duke, scoring seven points during that spurt. Three days earlier, he had a career-high 28 in a 73-69 loss to Wisconsin, the Blue Devils' first in 11 Big Ten-ACC Challenge games. They responded by winning their seventh straight in their series with St. John's.

Scheyer finished with 15 points on 4-of-14 shooting.

Sean Evans had a season-high 17 points while Kennedy led the Red Storm in scoring for the sixth time this season. St. John's, playing its first game against a power-conference team, shot 50.9 percent but lost its 26th straight on a Top 25 team's home floor.

Plenty of the Blue Devils' streaks remained alive, too. They claimed their 33rd straight home victory against unranked opponents while winning their 46th consecutive home game in December, a string that dates back to 1996.

For the first time, Duke had the starting lineup coach Mike Krzyzewski had planned in the preseason with 6-foot-10 freshman Mason Plumlee making his first start after missing the first six games with a broken wrist and making his debut in the Wisconsin game.

But a pair of veterans--Thomas and Zoubek--came off the bench and wound up making a big difference in this one, scoring 11 points apiece.

Zoubek had just his second double-figure performance of the season while Thomas turned in a pair of impressive individual efforts early, knocking down a a baseline jumper and then drawing a charge to spark the Cameron crowd.

Duke took the lead for good by outscoring St. John's 31-9 during a 10 1/2 -minute stretch of the first, with Thomas' three-point play at the 12 1/2 -minute mark putting the Blue Devils ahead to stay.

Smith gave Duke its first double-figure lead with the second of his 3s on consecutive trips downcourt with 9 minutes left, and 90 seconds later, Singler ended the run by following a missed 3 with a layup that made it 31-15.

St. John's lost one of its starters on the first shot of the game. Team officials said Justin Burrell sprained his right ankle when he landed on a Duke player's foot after his short jumper gave the Red Storm a 2-0 lead roughly 25 seconds in.

Solid effort from the boys, only way we can go from here is forward. Take care of Georgia @ the Garden.

My boy venom lyrix was broadcasting from Cameron yesterday

Justin Burrell's injury on the 1st play of the game though was ridiculous. Shouts to Plumlee for stepping into his landing zone smh.

This team has some spunk in my opinion, we outplayed Duke 30 out of 40 minutes. If it wasnt for that 17-3 run in the last half of the 1st we would have beenfine. We look dangerous in the open floor and we had way more athletiicism on the floor than what Duke had.

the trip was amazing. Broadcasting for a place like that gave me chills all night. It is something I willn never ever forget...ill post some pics later and gomore in depth of the time there later.

I went too, we're you sitting on press row?.....Who did you broadcast for?.....I was like 6 row courtside in back of Coach K and the Blue Devilbench........The campus was amazing and the Duke fans didn't bother me, maybe they did our team.

no i was in the press box above the stands. The press row were for journalists and the bloggers. I was broadcasting for St. John's radio - WSJU.

That's awesome, I'm currently doing a little write up on the game and my experience at Duke for the Torch, should be interesting.

One starter was on crutches and three more were bumped from the lineup for disciplinary reasons, but even that couldn't slow St. John's fast start to this season.

The Red Storm took its new and improved act to the city's biggest stage Wednesday night and got good reviews. The Johnnies overcame a foul-prone and sloppy first half with a strong beginning to the second and pulled out a 66-56 victory over Georgia in the first game of the SEC-Big East Invitational at the Garden.

Justin Burrell, sidelined with a high right ankle sprain, was replaced by Dele Coker. The Red Storm made three other changes to its starting lineup because Paris Horne, .J. Kennedy and Sean Evans were three minutes late to the morning bus from campus. In their place, Dwight Hardy, Omari Lawrence and Justin Brownlee got their first career starts.

"We have a rule - that everybody has to be on time," Evans said. "If you start, you're a reserve. If you're a reserve, you're a reserve reserve."

Hardy finished with 12 points and Brownlee scored 10, while Kennedy came off the bench to add 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The Johnnies (7-1) weren't bothered by the lineup change - they led 9-3 when Evans and Kennedy entered with almost four minutes gone. Horne was inserted about a minute later. St.John's made it to halftime with a 28-25 lead, then opened a second half in which it shot 61% with a 20-11run to take control. A Hardy three made it 48-36, and the the lead got as big as 61-47 before the Bulldogs (4-4) made a late charge to pull within 62-56 with 1:19 to play.

The Johnnies' three belated ballers were to drive from their off-campus apartment to the bus in Kennedy's car, but he misplaced the keys. Coach Norm Roberts was irked that they didn't call, but Evans said that was because "we didn't know how long it was going to take - he loses his keys a lot."

Ultimately they called for a taxi, which came later than expected in the inclement weather.

"A rule is a rule," Roberts said.

  • I think watching that game last night exposed how much we probably do need Burrell and Mason.
  • Malik Boothe is by far THEEEE worst Big East starting PG I've ever seen. Mark Jackson is rolling over in his grave.
  • Brownlee, Hardy and Omari have all filled roles that plagued us last season, too bad 2 of em are juniors.
Take care of Fordham.

Norm Roberts should start out with full court press. Do we have any commits for 2010 yet?

Yea, Ronald Roberts.
From the summer:

St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) coach Mike Kelly didn't mince words a few days ago when asked about his first year of experience with senior starter Ronald Roberts.

"He has been an unbelievable success story in 365 days," said Kelly. " He has grown to a legit 6-foot-7. He jumps throught the roof and his game has just exploded. If he keeps on this pace, some day he could be a pro."

Roberts started his career at nearby Bayonne High and made the move to the prep school last season.

Roberts' offer list is growing
"Ron is a player that transferred to us out of his hometown after his sophomore year and had never played a minute of varsity basketball," said Kelly. "He's a guy that has decided to turn himself around both academically and athletically."

That late start to becoming a high school star has helped keep Roberts out of the rankings.

"Nobody knew who he was this time last year," said Kelly. "We just played St. Anthony's of Jersey City in our summer league last week and they have three big guys that are all rated ahead of him--there is not one big guy that I would trade him for. His upside is so tremendous."

As a junior, Roberts helped lead St. Peter's to a 22-3 record, a top five state ranking and the school's second straight conference championship. He averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds per game and recorded 23 double-doubles during the season.

It didn't take long for Indiana to get involved in his recruitment thanks in part to former local native and now Hoosier assistant Roshown McLeod.

"Roshown McLeod is here all the time," said Kelly. "They came to a game over the winter, both Coach (Tom) Crean and Coach McLeod. Then Roshown has been in our gym for workouts and a couple other games after that. I know that they saw him out in Vegas just last month."

You people are crazy if you think our rebounding is a problem. Against a big Georgia team we rebounded well in my opinion. I re watched the game yesterday, weneed to finish around the rim more, less turnovers and hit free throws.

7-1 right now, no reason we doing go into Georgetown on December 31st 10-1.

Mase is 2 weeks away so he should/hopefully be ready for Georgetown.

I'm more interested in how soon Burrell can come back, but that's good news I guess.

Anxious to see what Mase has worked on.

hey everyone...just want to let you know we are 8-1 and destroyed Fordham today.

Yea...time to give props!!

Don't expect to see Burrell until the new year. Good thing is he probably will only miss like 2 Big East games. And if Brownlee plays like he did today, then we'll be fine.

St. John's finished the game on an 18-1 run over the last 7 minutes.

Top Hofstra 72-60 at Madison Square Garden. Improve to 9-1 on the season and now face Cornell in the Championship of the Holiday Festival at 9:30pm
