Not very sheltered, lived in Rhode Island most of my life, but I've also driven across the country 4 times and lived in Tucson, AZ for 3 years off/on. Also spent a good portion of my childhood in Baltimore, as well as traveled to the entire UK...
Just have no clue about the Midwest or Chicago in general. It's somewhere I've never had any interest in visiting and never looked into it too heavily

I've been to Chicago. I liked it but I wouldn't live there. Not a big fan of 4 season type weather.

500 - 1000 a week is a huge range. It's gonna be hard to live in the Chi for 500 a week, but 1000 a week is cool. You can find a 2 bedroom on the Northside for 2000-2500, so with a roomate you're talking about a 1000-1250 a month. Northside is probably the best area for a white male (tons of attractive white women). South Loop and Hyde Park are also areas you might consider, and are a little cheaper, but aren't dangerous or anything.
It's a great city, but this whole job situation seems a little suspect. If I were you I'd make the move but as soon as I got there I'd look for something a little more solid.
