NBA commissioner David Stern claims that only half of the teams in the league are making a profit, but an executive believes that only "five to seven" are doing well.

"If you are alive in this world and you have access to that ancient form of communication - the newspaper, which I do and I have - you can't help reading the headlines with what's going on," Stern said. " ... So if you're having a business discussion, you just have to understand what's going on in the world around you, and we did that. That said, the owners were remarking upon the strength of the sports business and the value that it provides."

One team executive told Newsday on Thursday that owners are worried about the economic downturn and might be inclined to let the current CBA with the NBA Players Association expire after the 2010-11 season rather than extend it.

That executive said only "five to seven" NBA teams are profitable.

"You're going to have owners pushing for a better deal," said the executive. "This is one of the years the NBA is worried that overall revenues may be a little bit down."

Damn how I wonder which teams are actually profitable and also why the hell are the Grizzlies still in Memphis? Toronto, Knicks, Lakers, Phoenix, andBoston?

My guesses would be Lakers, Celtics, McCains, Cavs, Nuggets, Knicks and...a wild card...

I'm gonna guess that the large market teams are the ones making a profit

New York
Chicago
LA
Dallas
San Antonio
Detroit
????

I would guess Warriors are making a good amount of money seeing as how they have the record for largest attendance for a basketball game in California. Othersare Lakers, Raptors, Pistons, Spurs...

Probably the big market teams: L.A, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Boston/Dallas....I assume Cleveland does well just off LBJ.

One of them has to be the Mavs
The Mavs have sold out 276 consecutive regular season games at AAC and 333 games including the pre and postseasons (20 consecutive preseason sellouts). Dallas currently owns the longest running sellout streak in the NBA. The Sacramento Kings previously held the streak.

The Mavericks sell out games like crazy, but I wouldn't doubt if they were in the red right now because Cuban is paying luxary tax dollars out hisrear-end...

Hopefully this is the impetus that gets Stern fired. I'll never understand how the owners allow Stern to take home $11 million a year in base salary andflush another $12 million down the toilet each year to keep the WNBA afloat... meanwhile some NBA teams aren't even turning a profit.
