TENNIS: OFFICIAL US OPEN 2011 THREAD! hawt.

I was hoping so. I can always change up the title on the Wimbledon thread but if Frank changes the title I'd be cool with that.

SP have you been following the US Open Series? Djoker killed MonFECES last night and it was a joy to watch. When MonFECES was getting destroyed in the second he started acting like a clown again with his antics and disrespectful shots.

^ Nah... I caught some of the earlier rounds (like Murray's loss) but missed that match as well as Jo Willy taking out Fed. There's a 12-hour time difference between us and Montreal so catching the late-afternoon/night matches is a bit tough for me. Been a wild tourney thus far, no doubt.

Anyway, posted this in the Nike Tennis thread, but figured I'd post here as well...

Does that basically mean before they named Wimbledon and the US / French / Austrailian Opens the official Grand Slams?
You guys think they'll ever add other grand slam events?  It'd be good to see one or two more major tournaments.  Maybe something in Asia or a place like Spain.  I know it'll mess up people's grand slam totals and records and the whole "grand slam" concept if there are more than 4 events.  Maybe just call them slams like in golf.

Before the "open-era" basically means before the time professionals could play in the big tournaments.  Before the "open era" only amateurs could play in the big tournaments we call "Grand Slams" (Australian Open wasn't played back then).  The reason some people question Laver's accomplishments is because of the competition he played against which I think is a bogus argument.

As far as adding grand slams I think China will be the next location.  However, the issue with adding more "Grand Slam" tournaments is the injury factor.  Tennis players already have a super short off-season to begin with and adding another slam would be difficult to coordinate.  If we look at the schedule the players play three slams in a 4 month period (French Open in May, Wimbledon in June/July and the US Open in August/September) followed by the end of year series which typically takes place between October and December followed by the Australian Open in January.  Unless you can shorten the season, adding another slam right after the Australian Open in March or April will significantly reduce the quality of play due to injuries IMO.

^ I kinda doubt they'll bring in a 5th slam... too many traditionalists would disagree with it. China (a true "Asian" slam vs "Asia Pacific" slam at Oz) would probably be a good choice. but I just don't see it happening.

The thing with breaks/holidays for the players is that the ATP/WTA/ITF didn't want the players playing in so many off-season exhibitions (which can earn the players quite a bit of $$$). The ATP wanted to force the players to not play during the off-season, but that was never gonna happen cuz some do exo charity matches as well, which would be unfair to those organizations. There was quite a debate about it towards the end of 2010...

Anyway, how about Djoker? Winning 5 (!!!) Masters in a year... and we're only in August! That's the most any player has won! He's alone in that category too! And yet ESPN doesn't even bother mentioning it on their website. No surprise, Serena's victory made the news-list... SMH. No disrespect to Serena, but Djoker deserved some coverage.

I bet if it were Nadal or Roger on this streak they'd get tons of press. The lack of Novak coverage has been consistent since the clay court season when he was beating Roger and Nadal every week. Not cool.

As far as Serena goes, I didn't think she would come back from the almost dying earlier in the year and I definitely didn't see her playing this well.

Djoker's easily having potentially one of the best single-seasons ever, but ESPN decides not to give a #$&* about it... typical.

Yeah, I was expecting Serena to bounce back, but not this strong and not so soon. Shame none of the ladies (thus far) have been able to really put up a good fight. Right now, probably only Maria has what it takes. Caro's game isn't aggressive enough, while Kim just keeps getting injured.
EDIT ~ Forgot to talk about RodDick... that guy.

Considering how big his serve is, he should be holding all his serves. He takes the 1st set, goes up a break in the 2nd and normally you'd expect him to close it out. He gets broken twice, loses the 2nd set and the 3rd set 6-1. In the process, he throws his racquet (code violation) and after double-faulting in the 3rd set, hits the ball out of the stadium and gets a point penalty. He also goes on the berate the umpire, who was just doing his job. I've tried to support the guy before, but he just doesn't get it... What a d!ck.

Please tell me I'm not the only one watching Djokovic struggle against Monfils.

nvm, Djoker was just waiting for Monfils to get tired.

^ Missed it... but did watch Murray cruise, Fish play well against a bad and exhausted Rafa and Berdych out-hit a error-prone Fed.

Fish looked very good, but dunno it he'll ultimately have the consistency to keep it up for 2 weeks.

Rafa was still feeling the effects of his match vs FeVer, but hasn't looked good all week.

Berd was just hammering a lot of shots, especially against Fed's 2nd serve.

qft.  Dude could win 3 slams, W T F, best single season record and still only get a mention on ESPN.

But yeah, Fed...

Berdych has his number.
