Klay Thompson's jumper is so pretty. Everytime he shoots I think of the Wesley/Woody shoot off in White Men Can't Jump.

"it's pretty, it's so pretty"

I still have no idea what aau basketball is
srs??
All we had growing up was highschool basketball
its another form of basketball for kids ages 9-18.....

for basketball, in between the HS season (here its November-Feb/March, later depending on if you make Sections/State aka playoffs).

So essentially during the summers, when school is not in session, the AAU is this other sports governing entity that puts together tournaments thru local clubs. They have this power because this organization has been around since the late 1800s and is relatively well established. There is a membership system and all for coaches and club organizers to become sanctioned AAU clubs.

Hence all these stories you hear about NBA guys, like OJ Mayo+Bill Walker or Dwight/Smith/Rondo or Love being from LA

since these AAU clubs aren't exclusive to HS teams.

Long story short, AAU basketball is basically official form of summer basketball for adolescence.

i kind of figured it was something like that but i dont get why its bad for skill development

is it because star players team up with each other so they breeze through competition without feeling the need to work on their skills?

repped for the info though

where in china will you be visiting this year?

so there are no skill development camps or anything? dont these teams have coaches and practices?

seems like this is a new thing were "todays players" have no fundamentals because of AAU basketball, but if the AAU is really old then why didnt it effect players from the 70s and 80s?

Its bad in part because of the team up aspect, but also because AAU has been mutilated over the years from the team basketball everyone adores to the individualistic 'me-ball' free running dunk highlights and Hot Sauce crossovers that has come with Youtube highlight videos and what not. Think glorified And1 mixtape is what "elite" AAU ball kinda looks like nowadays. Literally every Kyrie Irving joke you can come up with essentially epitomizes AAU basketball nowadays.

A big factor in AAU's downfall is that the club owners/coaches come up with decent dough if they have stud players that are attractive to advertisers, so these coaches do nothing but encourage the YouTube highlight style of play that will bolster their players stocks. And that only stuffs the pockets more of the clubs with more exposure the kids get.

*the money didn't really come into play until the internet/youtube age really started blowing up, and that is what kinda caused the boom in this style of play in the late 00s.

Its not 100%, I need to put in a time off request still but I'll would be heading to HK and maybe Macau in March.... My parents are heading over there and I figured I could stay with an uncle or cousin over there... not sure how many more trips my folks can take over there so I figure I may as well enjoy it while I can. I can't see myself heading over there by myself

So Jimmy Butler or Draymond Green gonna win most improved?
I hope Ben Mclemore is in the discussions tbh

but if it wasnt for aau basketball we might not have gotten the julius randle dunk mixtape

makes sense though, people want the fame before putting in the actual work. growing up with AAU and attending 1 year of college seems to be the cookie cutter path for a big name prospect to get to the nba, just not enough skill development inbetween i guess. EU players still have a ways to go before they can be considered on par with all the talent that comes out of the US every year, but im looking forward to the day everything balances out and americans realize they need to put in the work to get drafted ahead of kids from europe and south america

sad thing is learning proper fundamentals only allow you to be better at all the and 1 crossovers and getting by your defender for highlight dunks

sounds like it should be a fun trip, love exploring HK and eating all the local foods whenever i visit. you can always find some friends to plan a trip to asia with, the experience is pretty different when you're exploring a new city with friends than if you're just chilling with your parents.. i really want to find some time within the next few years to visit tokyo with a group of friends for a week or two and just get lost in the culture (and ramen)

Kobe is so blatantly bashing basketball knowing he's on his way out :lol

On his grumpy old man steez early. Only a matter of time until he says euro league > nba

kobe knows that he already runs china so now he's branching out to the europe market

i see you kobe

I see Kobe's point, but the problems can't be pinned entirely on AAU. AAU may be the worst of it, but what he's complaining about happens in all types and levels of organized basketball in the US, even high school. Kids who show exceptional talent are coddled starting at an early age and not pushed to develop all around skills. Obviously, there are exceptions, but it happens a lot.
