The one tidbit of UK-related news that came down yesterday was the unfortunate injury of Daniel Orton. The story broke (once again) by Facebook, when Orton posted that he was "out for the year" on his site. Larry Vaught then interviewed Daniel's coach who said that, while he wasnt certain, he didnt believe that the injury would keep Daniel out until January. Apparently he had some damage in his knee, but no ligaments were torn and regardless, he will be fine by his time at Kentucky.

This season, the ACC is viewed as North Carolina and everyone else - and rightfully so.

With the return of five starters - including big man Tyler Hansbrough, thefirst AP national player of the year to stay in college since Shaquille O'Neal in 1991-92 - from a team that won 36 games and reached the Final Four, UNCenters the 2008-09 season as one of the biggest national title favorites since the dominating UCLA teams of the 1960s and 1970s. The Tar Heels are the firstunanimous No. 1 in the history of the coaches' preseason top 25.

But that doesn't mean UNC's chief competition hasn't improved either. A year after sending four teams - a relatively low number by ACC standards- to the NCAA tournament, the 12-team league has a chance to send at least six to the field of 65.

Thanks largely to the return of a wealth of experience, five other ACC teams were ranked among the top 40 in the Rivals.com Top 65 Countdown: Duke (No. 6),Wake Forest (No. 18), Miami (No. 27), Clemson (No. 35) and Virginia Tech (No. 38). Maryland (No. 61) also was ranked.

Wake Forest, which finished in a tie for seventh last season, returns every scholarship player. Duke has four starters back, including 2007-08 ACC Rookie ofthe Year Kyle Singler. The same goes for Miami, which reached the second roundof the NCAA tournament, and Virginia Tech - which was one of the last teams left out of the field of 65. Clemson returns three starters from a team that was aNo. 5 seed in the 2008 NCAA tournament.

The ACC also is adding an extraordinary amount of talent. Four of the five selections to Rivals.com's preseason All-ACC freshman team are five-starprospects. Wake Forest signed three five-star prospects - and two did not make the freshman team.

All-Freshman Team

F DeQuan Jones, Miami, 6-6/217
F Chris Singleton, Florida State, 6-9, 220
F Al-Farouq Aminu, Wake Forest, 6-9/215
Team on the rise: Wake Forest
No team in the league has a bigger collection of young talent. Wake welcomes three five-star prospects: 6-9 forward Al-Farouq Aminu (older brother Alade Aminu plays for Georgia Tech), 6-11 centerTony Woods and 7-foot center Ty Walker. Every starter and 11 lettermen return from a team that finished in a tie forseventh last season. That includes sophomores Jeff Teague and James Johnson, both All-ACC-caliber players. The rotation will be at least 10 deep. Ifthe newcomers develop quickly, the Deacons could finish as high as second.
Team on the decline: Virginia
Two seasons ago, Virginia was a basket away from reaching the Sweet 16; Tennessee edged the Cavaliers 77-74 in the second round of the 2007 NCAA tournament.Last season, the Cavaliers were a basket away from a last-place finish in the ACC, using a win over Maryland in the regular-season finale to finish ahead ofBoston College and North Carolina State. Escaping the absolute bottom of the standings will be even more difficult. No player in the league may have been morevaluable than second-round pick Sean Singletary, who led the team in scoring, assists and steals.

Coach(es) on the rise: Miami's Frank Haith and Clemson's Oliver Purnell
Both enjoyed breakthrough years last season. Purnell guided Clemson to its first NCAA appearance since 1998, while Haith took Miami for the first time since2002. Nobody should be surprised to see Purnell and Haith back in the Big Dance, either. Clemson returns three starters, and Miami brings back four. Both alsoare winning big recruiting battles. Miami welcomes five-star wing DeQuan Jones, while Clemson has a commitment from a five-star big man in the 2009 class (Milton Jennings).

Coach on the hot seat: Sidney Lowe, NC State
The job security of Georgia Tech's Paul Hewitt and Maryland's Gary Williams also appears shaky, but Lowe doesn't have anywhere near their level ofsuccess to lean on. Outside of a shocking run to the 2007 ACC tournament final, Lowe's two seasons in Raleigh have been rocky. The Wolfpack has gone 9-23in ACC play under his watch. Tying for last place last season was especially hard to accept: The Wolfpack returned four starters and were third in theleague's preseason poll. Lowe lost control of the team down the stretch as NC State lost its final nine games, including seven by double-digits.

Best offensive player: North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough
Even with a shin injury that may keep Hansbrough down in the early stages of the season, it's impossible to pick anyone but him in this category.Hansbrough will be remembered as one of the greatest big men ever in the college ranks and quite possibly the best ever - at any position - at getting to thefree-throw line. Hansbrough is on pace to become the ACC's leading career scorer (he needs 602 points to pass former Duke guard J.J. Redick's 2,769points) and the NCAA's career leader in free throws made (he needs 173 to pass Wake Forest's Dickie Hemric's 905 free throws).

Best 3-point shooter: Miami's Jack McClinton
Ask any ACC coach about the league player he would want to shoot a 3-pointer in a clutch situation; if they don't answer McClinton, they're probablylying. He shoots with deadly accuracy and has tremendous range. He led the league in 3-pointers made (94) last season and shot 42.7 percent (94-of-220) frombeyond the arc, which ranked second. He went 7-for-12 from 3-point range to propel the Hurricanes to a 95-93 win over Virginia.

Best defensive player: Florida State's Toney Douglas
He led the ACC with 90 steals last season, which was 21 more than the next-highest total. Forty-eight of those steals came in ACC games, which is thethird-highest total in league history.

Coach Dino Gaudio has the Wake Forest program on the rise.
Best player you don't know yet: Clemson's Trevor Booker
Booker, a junior, may be the best big man in the league outside of Hansbrough. He was a force on a Clemson team that nabbed a No. 5 seed in the NCAAtournament, leading the Tigers with 7.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. He was third on the team in scoring at 11.0 points per game, but is capable of beinga go-to guy on offense. In back-to-back games last season, he scored 32 points in a loss to Charlotte and had 29 in a win over Florida State.
Deepest bench: Wake Forest
Playing an 11-man rotation is a real possibility for Wake coach Dino Gaudio. Eightplayers who averaged double-digit minutes per game are back, and the Deacons added three five-star recruits. The Demon Deacons have extraordinary depth on theinside with seven players at least 6-8, including 7-footers (Chas McFarland andTy Walker).

Impact newcomer: Wake Forest's Al-Farouq Aminu
Of Wake's three top-25 prospects, Aminu (No. 7 overall in the 2008 class) is the highest-ranked and most ready. Long and athletic, he is an inside-outsidescorer, but probably will make his biggest impact on the glass. He'll likely work his way into the starting lineup by midseason and will create matchupissues when playing with versatile forward James Johnson.

Freshman sleeper: Virginia Tech's Victor Davila
The Hokies are looking for help on the inside and believe Davila can provide it. Davila - a three-star prospect - isn't particularly athletic, but he'sstrong and has an ACC-ready frame at 6-8 and 245 pounds. That size will help him bang down low with the league's top big men. Expect him to earn a startingjob by the time ACC play starts.

I am surprised by this. I thought you could have had Jai and Kenny together in the starting lineup since Calathes is likely to leave after this year. Wherey'all expect him to go, Oklahoma State? I remember that was high on his list before + him and james andersen would be a nice duo. Sorry, I just don'tsee Wall doing Duke. If I were him I would rather play at NC State with Favors, cuz you know if Favors commits (even though it seems G. Tech is the favorite toland him) that team would be scary to see.

Isn't (or wasn't) UF strapped for 'ships?

Maybe Donovan gave him a heads up...?

actually...Gary Parrish wrote about it this week prior to the transfer..

Dear Gary: Florida landed Kenny Boynton (last) week. The only issue is that including the other players they received commitments from in the Class of 2009,they have exceeded their scholarship limit by two. By all accounts, Nick Calathes has one foot out the door already, but that still means they exceed the limitby one. How common is this?

-- Stan

Very common.

And it's no big deal.

Quick story: Before I got this job I covered a program that over-signed nearly every year, it seemed, and every year fans would write and ask whether the coachhad any idea what he was doing. I mean, the emails were countless. So I pretty much had to develop a stock answer that included a phrase about how it would allwork itself out because, you know, it always did. And it always does. And that's why anybody worrying about Billy Donovan's recruiting habits shouldworry about something else. Trust me when I tell you there is nothing a coach spends more time doing than projecting his roster as it pertains to recruiting, and most live by the theory that it is never bad to have too many good players on board because if worse comes to worse there's always a way to balancethings if they don't balance themselves.

So how could Florida get down to 13 scholarship players?

Calathes could turn pro, as you mentioned.

Let's assume that's one, in which case Donovan would have to clear just one scholarship, and there's about a million ways that could happen.Somebody else could turn pro. Or somebody could flunk out. Or somebody could get dismissed for a variety reasons. Or somebody could choose to transfer. Orsomebody could be encouraged to transfer. Or ... you get the point.

Of course, there's also always the chance a recruit could decommit. Or fail to become eligible. Or go to Europe. So again, just trust me, come next Augustthis will not be a problem. It's not always easy to see in advance or even understand. But like I said before, it always works itself out, one way oranother.

How is this not UMD?

Virginia at least has a nice class this year followed up by Spurlock next year.

Arizona still has achance with Solomon Hill after all.

Solomon Hill won't make a college decision until the spring.
Solomon Crawford, the father of the 6-foot-6, 195-pound Los Angeles Fairfax small forward, informedGOAZCATS.com on Wednesday that his son would be waiting until the spring before making a final college decision, and that the Wildcats would remain a seriouscontender to land him.

"Solomon Hill, aka Shonuff, has decided to wait until the spring and see what Arizona does," Crawford said. "We'll see what coach theydecide to bring in there.

"His heart is still with Arizona. He told me he would love to play for Arizona. I tell my son to be a leader and if he has to take the bull by the horns, then he'll do it. It's not like he can't get into another school or he can't get other offers."

On top of Hill's continued interest in Arizona, because of the limited time to go through the recruiting process before signing day, it's beendifficult for him to make an informed decision.

"He didn't have enough time to get to know anyone," Crawford said. "It would be a big rush right now and it wouldn't be a good decision. We'll sit back, concentrate on Solomon's studies, see who Arizona brings in, see who is leaving the other schools he's interested in and see who iscoming in."

Crawford stopped short of saying that Hill would definitely go to Arizona if he liked the new coach, but did say that talking with the UA's new hire wouldbe a priority.

"We'll have to sit down with the (new) coach, see what his game plan is for Solomon, see how he plans to utilize him and we'll take it fromthere," Crawford said.

Hill plans on taking official visits to Arizona, Kentucky and Georgetown, as well as a couple others, before making his decision.

While other schools will continue to recruit Hill, UA won't be at a complete disadvantage because of the family's relationship with Arizona assistantReggie Geary.

"Reggie is still in constant contact with us about the situation and we'll see who Arizona brings in at the end of the season," Crawford said."We're still planning on taking our official visit out there during the season and we'll just take it from there.

"We'll see what the coach they bring in says and what kind of direction they're going; what kind of style of play they're playing."

And, yeah, that Lucas transfer right now seems feel weird. I mean, why not just play the season and then leave? You've basically been playing andpracticing for the last few months to get to this point and then be like "Nah, coach, I'm gone." Makes no sense.

I hear the team is a little more tight this year...and the division isn't there with the senior class...

you find that to be true?

Maybe he'd rather sit out his sophomore year than his junior year...it makes perfect sense to sit out this year.

This way he has two years to focus on progressing with his future team, as opposed to wasting a year with a team that he probably doesn't care as muchabout anymore...

That's true...everyone is close. Last year there was a definite division between Pat, Roy, Ty, Jon, and everyone else on and off the floor.

My dude Sapp and Vernon clowned the hell out of them for gettin it in with somewhite chicks off campus instead of hanging out at a black party on campus one night....LOL. Some dudes feelings were hurt that night.

In case any of you care,

COMMITTED TO KU (rivals.com ranking in parenthesis):
Thomas Robinson (18)
Elijah Johnson (27)

KU is STILL RECRUITING:

John Wall (1) - we're pretty much not an option for him anymore since signing Elijah Johnson
Xavier Henry (3) - our #1 target. He's either going to follow his brother to Memphis or he's going to be the next generation of Henry's at KU (hismom and dad both played at KU)
Lance Stephenson (9) - it's looking like he's going to sign in the spring. He's going to take an official visit to Lawrence, it just hasn'tbeen scheduled yet
Michael Snaer (11) - many believe he is a lock to Kansas, IF Henry goes to Memphis
Dominick Cheek (16) - right now he's our third target. If Henry chooses Memphis and Snaer goes elsewhere, most are saying that Cheek would come to KU

Roy was always good at recruiting. He always landed one top 50 guy every year, but Bill Self is a recruiting machine! During the Roy years, we never receivedthis much interest from this many top 20 recruits.

A&M is looking pretty weak right now against A&M-Kingsville. We're up 10 early in the 2nd half, but we haven't looked very good at all. Toomany 3 pointers for my liking...

Just back from UConn's first scrimmage against AIC, team looked solid 83-58 win, Walker looks like a stud, a matter of weeks until he is starting, Thabeetwith 21 10 and 6 Blocks but didnt seem that dominating defensively.

I see y'all picking up Snaer out the bunch. I don't think Cheek wants to wait along for y'all so he is out to me. I'm sorry Lance is just tooConey to come to Kansas. Y'all heard Sebastyian on Through the fire, if you aint from NYC, you country. Henry's basically a lock for Memphis and Wallhad his free pick. Snaer is the only one who seems like a sure thing to come to me.

I was there as well. If you want a chance to stop UConn then play as much zone as possible (F' Syracuse). AIC hit us with the zone theentire game and it frustrated us for parts of the first half until we figured it out. The one good thing was UConn's guards played with patience anddidn't force too much. Alot of quick ball movement on the perimeter and a drive and kick or pop and pass to a big man at the free throw line. It stymiedour offense every now and then but UConn was good about trying to slowly break the zone down.

On that note, that boy Kemba is a baller. Dude is gonna eat this year, especially if the opposing squad is playing man or doesn't get back on D quickenough. He showed good range (hit two 3's I believe), drove the lane and finished nicely with a chique floater and gave a couple dudes the shakes on thebreak.

AJ looks healthy but wasn't called on to do too much. He left most of the playmaking duties to Kemba and Craig Austrie. He did get off the ground prettyquick for a block attempt on a fast break so it's safe to say his knee is fully healed.

Dyson isn't himself, plain and simple. He was real hesitant on the perimeter and passed up a couple open 3's. He was more so trying to fit into theteam rather than go for his and honestly, it was that killer instinct he played with the last two years before the suspension that made him a potential star. I gotta stop gettin' this dude bent at the bar and get him focused on ball.

Hasheem looks like he's ready to do big things offensively, yet didn't have to show any improved one on one moves to get his. Most of his points werefrom positioning himself perfectly on the blocks and catching lobs or taking a quick step, squaring up and going up strong. I was slightly surprised at hisdefense and expected more blocks as he let his man who was like 8 inches shorter than him score over him a couple times, but I think that was a case of himbeing more patient on the defensive end and not trying to block every shot that goes up. I like that because it means less stupid fouls for him and keeps himin the game longer.

I like the make-up of the squad right now. It's a nice collaberation from the 1st man to the 9th man. Once Stanley Robinson comes back, he's going toadd a whole 'nother dimension to our squad athletically, defensively, and size wise and will allow them to go with a bigger but equally athletic line-up asopposed to the 3 guard line-up UConn started with last night. I was a bit hesitant on them being ranked #2 but I'm starting to see the pieces cometogether and think they deserve a solid top 5 ranking.

I hope he turns it around. When we played them, I most def thought he would be 2 and out. Especially when I found out about Marcus leaving, Ithought he was going to shine last year. The games I did catch he didnt look as aggressive as his freshman year.
