The College Basketball Post

Hunter Mickelson to transfer from Arkansas.

The UF sites never mention Gonzaga when it comes to Grayson Allen .

From an interview on the Duke Scout site in late march
What's your thoughts on Gonzaga?

They've been down about three times during my high school season. They offered like two months ago, as well. In watching them play, they recruit differently, since they are considered the #1 team, and it's a big honor to be recruited by them and it's definitely somebody I'm interested in.

Which schools are in contention for that one May visit?

I'm not 100% for sure, but one school would definitely be Gonzaga. Since they are so far away, that's some place I definitely want to take a look at so I can see what the campus is like, the facilities because I definitely like how they do things from a basketball perspective up there, seeing the campus I think will be good.
Insiders just felt Gonzaga would be the toughest competition to land this kid, however one reliable guy said tonight that he thinks Allen will be the first commit of 2014

How much does this go back on Roy and development? Come in as a top 5 pick and spend 2 years and you're mid-late first round pick in a weak draft

Word to Barnes stock dropping as well, all the players from the Hansbrough Years, 05 championship team, he just doesn't produce good pros. UNC still gets kids off their history but I'd be wary if I was a top 5 projected kid. Ty Lawson is the best recent UNC pro player. Interesting to see how he plays Britt and Paige. If he gets Wiggins though man...

When you return after your peak for another year of school then you're going to go lower. That had little to do with Roy. Name some players that Roy had who should be better than Ty? Don't let stars fool you into thinking players are better than they are. Ed Davis got much better and bolstered his draft stock under Roy. Zeller improved. Ellington was who he was. That's usually the case. Players have their limitations.

You just named 2 players who got better under Roy and they are still only backups. Davis may start down the road, I liked what I saw of him at times in Toronto but he's not a star. I don't think Barnes peaked after his first year either he's going to be very good. But I feel where you're coming from, he did have guys who peaked at college. I don't understand how he gets guys to stay for so long as well so he's doing something right

Ed didn't get starter minutes his freshman year but came in and was ready for the college game. Sophomore year he broke his wrist and missed over half the year so I don't see how Roy helped him.

Harrison was told by Roy he wouldn't go lottery after his freshman year which was a lie, he's always sold kids low on their draft stock.

Zeller is the only person in recent memory to get better but that had alot to do with Kendall

Look at how much Danny Green has improved since he got to the league.

Marvin had his limitations but he cashed out on that opportunity to go top 3 in a loaded draft. Brandon Wright is probably the only one who should have came back and developed but he didn't pass up the lottery

Go back to Kansas, who came in and was developed by him?

What does Ed Davis and Tyler Zeller not being stars in the L have to do with Roy Williams? That just makes no sense.

So Danny Green becomes a decent role player, who still has major flaws in his game and Roy is to blame for that?

Ed and Henson both got better. Zeller got better.

And let's be serious, I don't care what rumor you heard about Roy telling Harrison that his draft stock wasn't lotto. I don't believe that he didn't come back for that reason.

Get Roy duck out your mouth Matt ...everybody that goes 1st round isn't a superstar no matter where they're from...UNC put solid pros in the league and most of them work hard and continue to improve and then you have your mccants and mays that don't make it cause of their own issues

But shout out to them "superstars" K is putting in the league these days :lol and don't bring up kyrie cause K didn't develop **** in 11 games...boy was just naturally raw

And JMM got his hype coming off the bench fr year...when everybody left and he was the target he folded...that's on him and he'll get it right but I don't think he was ever the player people hyped him up to be...

You can say that for alot of players that go pro after their fr year and never do ****...just how **** goes these days

I'm sorry but what does Coach k have to due with Roy's subpar development?

That used to be UNC's claim to fame... we produce GREAT pro's... well that **** isn't ringing true as of late.

but they're doing better than your pros.....you comparing pros today to pros coming out in the 80s/early 90s....**** different now...the game changed....the college game changed...

only coach putting out high level talent consistently is Calapari and he's getting dudes that are #1 or #2 in their position outta high school every year

Roy Williams' UNC players coached that have been in the NBA at one point.

Sean May
Rashad McCants
Raymond Felton
Marvin Williams
David Noel
Jawad Williams
Brandan Wright
Tyler Hansbrough
Ty Lawson
Wayne Ellington
Danny Green
Ed Davis
Harrison Barnes
John Henson
Kendall Marshall
Tyler Zeller

Drew better then all of them pimp. 11 games needed thats it.. Jabari shall be better then all as well.

Roy doesn't have that dude. Wiggins would be ridiculous but who knows

Yes, but what's the point? How many UNC guys as of late had the talent to be great pros and have disappointed? We all follow this stuff closely and no that just because you're an McDAA doesn't mean you're a future pro. You can't name one game who came through as of late that was just a surefire great pro and Roy inhibited his development. Duke has grabbed some of those guys as of late, when you think about Kyrie and Luol. I guess  Parker is in that boat now as well? Roy missed on Kevin Love, probably will miss on Wiggins, turned down John Wall due to shady recruitment, etc etc. It's cool to say that UNC hasn't been producing great pros like they're known for, but don't misattribute it to "Roy's development." You're better than that.

You know I'm a student of the game, so I'm not strictly basing that on UNC, even going back to Kansas that was his rap sheet. For as much flack as K gets, Roy has always had AMAZING college teams who turn out to meh pros. He developed Drew Gooden into a monster at KU, I'll give him that, Kirk, & Paul (although Paul was that dude as soon as he got there) This isn't me trying to throw him or UNC down, we're actually making the same point: times have changed. I'm just saying that the rep that was frequently threw in Duke fans face of creating great players on the next level isn't necessarily accurate anymore, You're right Cal has that title, he is that guy.

As far as Love & Wall go the same can be said for K, we were also in on Love and pulled out of the John Wall situation due to his handlers. For the most part, guys who are killers on the next level are already going to be that before they come to a school, every player that is a savage in the L right now it was already written on them when they were in H.S. Its all about whether or not you can get that kid to come to you school.

Aside from Kevin Love, Roy missed out on Durant. Both had UNC in their last 2 choices. And we all know JR would have been a Heel if he didn't light up the McD's game.

kevin love was going to UCLA the whole damn time.

and i thought grades was a reason teams like UCLA,UNC and Gtown couldnt take KD?

Honestly, Duke is just one of those teams that people love to hate and revel in any failure that they can find in them. K produced Elton, Maggette, Jay Will (would've been great), Boozer, Deng, and now Kyrie. It's just all about getting those blue chippers. Boozer was the only one that he really really developed out of that bunch, no? Any of the other guys could've went ANYWHERE and found the same results.

KD's UNC recruitment gets a different story each person you ask. Some say Roy pulled his scholly for Brandan Wright, some say it was a grades issues, and others say Texas came through with a check.

I think ComeUp was touching on it, but The degree to which players get developed at place A compared to place X just isn't that great.

Most is correlated to HS rankings and misses and hits on those guys. Jeff Green was unranked and Otto Porter wasn't sniffing anyone's top 50 until spring of his SR year and both turned into lottery picks. Georgetown didn't sprinkle magic dust on them, that's just oversight related to perception and dumb luck in landing them.

Take the Wear twins or someone like McAdoo who was ridiculously overrated - that's not lack of development, that's just lazy recruiting and evaluation by their own staff or outsiders who hype these kids. Coach K went on a dry spell of 'developing' guys like Shavlik, Sean Dockery, DeMarcus Nelson, Greg Paulus - but it was really just because they all ******g sucked. Like, look at Nate Britt already - hyped for years, UNC snags him early and now he's tapped out his ability out by his SR yr. He's awful but still a name that won't become what he was supposed to be.

Coach K wasn't turning Harrison Barnes into a monster. Nobody was. He was overrated from the jump.

Once in a while you get a kid who really turns himself into a different player at that usually just comes from hard work they put in themselves.

I don't look at too many schools and notice their player development standing out. Kansas under Self is definitely one, but there aren't many.

^Agree with everything.

Also, giving the ball to one player and telling him to do w.e the **** he wants to do is technically not developing them. I think work ethic, fundamentals, and IQ outweigh everything else (athleticism, length, etc).
