The Graphic Design Thread UPDATE: 1st post filled with info. 2nd with NTer's portfolios.

My homie is an awesome illustrator that's trying to crowd fund his illustration book that he and his wife put together.

TATAY'S GIFT KICKSTARTER

It's based off the culture he observed and learned during his mission work while in the Philippines.

He also plans on donating a good portion of the proceeds to help with the ongoing relief of those affected by the typhoons.

Peep it out.

Thanks NT.

Had this idea in my head for the longest to do something spiritual and/or religious. I came up with Good vs Evil and/or God vs Devil. Not the design I'm aiming to publish for this content here but I figured I needed to get something down on paper before I forgot about the idea.
Light casts from above on the Go(o)d or left side and creates downward shadow on paragraphs 'O' and 'A' whereas light casts from below on the (D)evil or right side to create upward shadow on paragraphs 'C' and 'A'.

Positive/Constructive criticism welcome ....please!

^^^^Hmmmmm.....honestly those mixed drop shadows are pretty random. I get your message but sometimes the message has to be more clear than that. Even in your heading alone, you have 3 different drops shadows and that is excluding the drop shadow in your picture and the drop caps. Imo...think editorials should some design messages but not so detailed. Also drop caps should only be used in the first paragraph and not on every one. Also try and have the drop cap go into the text and not have it higher than the body text. Like this:

But nice start and design. I'd even think it'd be cool if you lost the halo and the shadow of the "D" on the heading and just added a halo on one Nixon and devil horns on the other. Kind of make it look like some bathroom graffiti.

Much appreciated FS.

Initially I was trying to get the feel of creating an article in ind with the page layout alone then I kinda got lost in the overall design and started to focus mainly on the heading and the details in it.

I wouldn't say I forced this story to match my theme but I definitely didn't use any critical thought in my approach with this. Again, it was more so intuitive just to get the idea down.

With that said I believe Ill take some time to recreate the theme with a more suitable topic or do it as a logo or both as well as take this one and use the encouragement to give it more of a receptive and pro look.

Along with what FongStarr pointed out I would also add that you need to be conscious of the page. The paragraphs are hugging that red stroke too much. It's cramped. It creates a tension that looks to be unintentional. Removing the extra drop caps might (and possibly reducing the black edges might give the copy more room to breathe and give you the ability to let the copy flow better.

As with the headline, I get the hidden extra "O" and "D" but I don't think it's necessary, as well as the stoke under the secondary headline is extra weight that's necessary.

I would also question the red outline. This article is about the battle of good and evil, but the red stroke reduces that balance and gives it a push to the "evil" side of the argument more based on color balance alone.

It's definitely there though. I just think tightening up will show some improvements. Also overall it is your project and the look on what you are doing is really up to you. This is just what "I would do". But that drop caps do need to go though. That is more of a design rule.

I feel the overload going on here now that you mention it in lamens. I understand that this is my design and that in the end everythings on me. Im reaching out because I need an experienced opinion to find a sense of direction. I realize that I'm headed in the right direction initially but taking the wrong road. I just wasn't sure why I wasn't feeling it before your perspectives were initiated, though I thought it was a good start. Just trying to find myself or my style rather when it comes to designing things and I appreciate the criticism you all take the time out to give for sure.

rejimen rejimen i made some mark ups earlier today (i was bored in class :lol )

these are the few things that caught my eye
1 - text design overlapping the picture
2 - inconsistent spacing (i understand the idea of 'D' drop shadow tho)
3 - give a little more space between the title and headline
4 - inconsistent spacing in the margins
5 - like someone said above, the paragraph text is 'hugging' the red border
6 - line up the paragraph text to the. its just a drop cap issue
7 - line up the end of the paragraph

here are a few things i'd suggest:
- keep the title/headline/paragraph text close together
- with a picture like that (its not a full picture ex. a pic of a beach) i wouldnt have it stretch from border to border
-fix the drop shadows

when i do editorials i tend to always make sure my design is consistent (have repeating elements where possible), has some sort of alignment (text aligned, pictures, spacing from border to text, margins, etc. ) and if i could add some sort of contrast (bold to light texts etc. )

good start tho
:Nthat

man some of yall are stupid talented. made this flyer for a friend on Photoshop. Ive never really used PS

so this took me a while lol. Ive been making Live Wallpaper Apps on After Affects for a couple years ago now, i thought it'd be easy since i know AA but PS is a whole other animal. Any tips? Advice? is Illustrator easier?

Thanks!

@arrjae2 Thanks for the pointers. The map you made is good for me bc I'm a visual learner and not as hip to some of the terms that may be slung around sometimes.

Question: For editorials are there different formats used for page layout or do you all simply work off of principles or rules?

Been grinding really hard these past 2 semesters to get stuff up for my portfolio. If you can update my portfolio link on the front page Mitchell, that'd be great.

It's now cargocollective.com/kevin_agustin

Also anyone have any resume tips on how I should set it up? I want to intern this summer but I have no graphic design intern experience yet so I feel like my resume right now is so empty. Any advice would be great fellas.

Hey dude! I noticed you're at CSULB. Go to the "CSULB Graphic Design Alumni Group" on Facebook. Alumni post a bunch of internships, part-time, freelance, etc.

As for your resumé I would make sure you design that thing properly. Usually that and your cover letter are the first thing they see, so that will set the mood for them wanting to see your portfolio.

If you've freelanced, before, add that to your resumé. It's real work, regardless how big or small the project is.

Yes I am part of the alumni group and everyone in there great posting links to internships and everything. It's really resourceful. And thanks for all the resume tips fam, I'm definitely going to design appropriately now.

For sure.

Check the FB often. I post internships/job opportunities I come across all the time. I just posted that Huge in LA is looking for interns. Deutsch is looking I believe. Ignited in El Segundo is looking.

Good luck.

Anywhere I can find (free) photo collage templates PSDs?

Looking to work on a website for my moms chocolate business and I want to collage different pics of her work together.

We want something cute/playful that shows Easter clothing ideas for kids that we offer. It can be just graphics or it can be graphics and text.
Lady wants me to create a sales ad for her. I'm trying to make it look better than this. Anyone got any ideas? Trying to squeeze it in right now with my schedule and get something done tonight

In the spoiler

My friend at Deutsch (ad agency) informed me that they will be doing a summer creative residency program.

I don't know the details, but it sounds like a great opportunity to do work with and learn from a top player in the advertising world.

Deutsch Summer Creatives

You should be able to get information from them.

We had to design a book for one of my classes. We were supposed to take a question (we did a 100 question exercise in the beginning of the semester with questions that interest us) or a theme from our questions and create images and compile them into an artist book.

A lot of my questions had to do with trust in the government and the media, so this is what i came up with.

Oh, and the pieces were supposed to be quick, no more then 15-20ish mins on each.

Any opinions?

very dope.
i liked that idea. the hand written type over the images design was fitting.
good pics you chose for the 'trust/terror' & 'openess'
