I think i have a good idea of what joyboy and the world gov was fighting about. not sure if this theory has already been thought of though.

so vegapunk said it was a war about ideology. I think joyboy was basically equivalent to being a communist/socialist and the rest of the 20 kingdoms were for democracy.

the great war was essentially world war 2. after the war, the world government erased history because they were scared of the idea of communism would gain traction, just like the US and the allied powers were scared of it post WW2 (the second red scare as historians call it) and it caused the US to go to war in vietnam and korea in order to contain communism.

the world government meets every year for a meeting which is essentially the united nations. the world government being corrupt and Imu being in charge of the world government is basically Oda’s way of saying that democracy isn’t necessarily perfect either and that behind the curtains, there are a select few who really run the show.

Damn sure took them long enough, I loved the first season and its artstyle.
I remember earlier this year my mom asking me out of the blue what happened with Tower of God I guess she must've really enjoyed it to even remember the name all these years later.
Besides the anime series she rates a 10/10 I usually have to jog her memory at least to some extent. She's probably watched more anime than me at the rate she's going.

She first got into anime in her early 60s so it's never too late to introduce your parents to it I suppose. She didn't like the idea at first but Death Note worked flawlessly to demonstrate any age can enjoy anime.

For reference, the anime series she currently rates a 10/10:
