The whole ratings discourse definitely reflects all the changes in how the league is discussed and followed nowadays compared to traditionally.
So much less focus on actual storytelling in favor of attention bait and hot takes.
All the changes within media have impacted sports as much as every other venue, the NBA especially so.
RIP to Greg Gumbel, one of the last real giants to do it
I’d argue that KD going to the warriors was an inception point for the league
the league had a regular season people were heavily invested in along with a great playoffs and an even better finals
KD’s thunder team was a huge part of that.. and would have continued to be a huge part given the move they made for sabonis and oladipo
But KD going to the warriors made the league basically a foregone conclusion, when it arguably could have been at its highest points with multiple high level legit contending threats
But I don’t expect KD to speak about his role.. just like I don’t expect draymond to admit to his stupidity and costing his team probably multiple championships
Great NFL game on right now BTW. Superior product I was told.
Draymond is the Anthony Mason of Robert Horrys
(Or maybe the other way around; I’m not good at this new game).
Definitley think the combo of the Warriors not winning the Finals after 73-9 and KD joining the following season turned off casual viewers and made them ignore the regular season even more. And then it became reality when they breezed through the league that first season and into the next season besides the Rockets WCF.KD to the warriors was a three year stint. He last suited up for them six years ago. The league has since experienced significant parity and had the most even-playing field since many of us started watching hoops in the 80s/90s. There’s no clear dynasty and no clear favorites, just “multiple high level legit contending threats” especially in the West.
We really blaming a steph/kd run for being the inflection point for nba ratings? Iirc, ratings were not an issue then even though people knew it would just be a warriors vs cavs finals. If Bron hadn’t left Cleveland, it probably would have been a fourth match up in 2019 and ratings would have still been good that season
