Yup and I maintain that basketball is harder now. More running, more wear and tear on your body.

The pace was 10 possessions higher in most years in the 80s than it is now, and the injuries weren't even close to being as big an issue as it is currently.

On a given possession the players are moving around way more though.

Players are now spaced further apart on the court, which requires more running to cover greater distances for defensive rotations, closeouts, and offensive movement to find open shots. There's just a more advanced offense, which requires the players to move more—both the offensive players to execute the sets and the defensive players to tag along and defend them.

Tracking data shows players typically run 2-3 miles during a game. I don't think it goes back as far as the 80s but the players were just standing around way more.

They’re still fine. The new, super lucrative TV deals didn’t go anywhere. The franchises are still more valuable than ever. NBA players are still bigger stars individually than guys from other sports (except for a few NFL quarterbacks and Shohei Ohtani).

The fact that ratings are trending down a bit in November isn’t really probative of a long term problem.
