I think it’s because he’s a defending champ. There’s kind of a precedent for it. Craig Hodges got to compete in the 3 point contest when he was out of the NBA because he was defending champ.

Last year was the first year. The previous rule was pretty lenient though, because all you had to do to qualify was be active on an NBA roster at some point in the season.
