you can use the mixamp or the turtle beach dss (they do the same thing) to run any pair of headphones or headset @ virtual 7.1

some headphones/headsets that perform great with the mixamp/dss and will be less than the whole a40/mixamp combo

sennheiser hd595, hd555, hd598
audio technica ad700, ad900
jvc rx700, rx900 (close to same sound stage as ad700 but for less)

turtle beach hpx
razer carcharias
sennheiser pc360
steelseries v2

like zk1mpls says it depends up to your budget, the new a40 are great but very expensive you can eventually spend less and get more with some of the ones i listed
^ This. I've heard really good things about the Astro MixAmp x AD700 combo, albeit the AD700 doesn't have a mic. What mic do you use?

I also heard the Sennheiser PC360 is really nice, but it's $250. Pricey, but it's cheaper than the Beyerdynamic MMX300, which is $350 for the headset only (but reportedly sounds incredible).

PO, for your budget, I heard the Razer Carcharias are great. They're $80. [Link]

Reviews on the SteelSeries Siberia V2s are favorable as well. $87 from Amazon. [Link]

Oh, and if you're interested in that new Official PlayStation 7.1 Wireless Bluetooth Headset in the video a few posts back... I think Amazon had a preorder discount on them. About $65 from the $99. Not sure if the promo's done, though. But that's taking a risk with an unproven product.

EDIT: Btw, if you're looking for a wireless headset, just be sure the headset doesn't run on 2.4GHz, since that might cause interference with most of your household radio devices.

And, if you plan on purchasing a surround sound processor (Dolby Headphone/Pro Logic IIz) in the near future, you basically have two popular choices: the Astro Gaming MixAmp and the Turtle Beach EarForce DSS.
  • The great thing with the MixAmp (Dolby Headphone) is that you can use any stereo headphones that have a compatible 3.5mm jack. But it costs $130 for the wired; $140 for the wireless... pretty steep. Plus you need an optical audio output to have 5.1/7.1 surround (MixAmp 5.8 - optical only; wired MixAmp - can accept a variety of inputs).
  • The EarForce DSS (Pro Logic IIx) retails for around $89.99, but you can get it on Amazon for $70. Accepts Optical Audio Out only.
I just went with the Astros since most said they're comfortable, well-built, sound great, and have really good customer service -which is important for me, since I live halfway around the world.

Shipping is just ridiculously expensive, though ($209.85 with taxes to the P.I. via FedEx). I just had it shipped to me using a US-based Philippine Forwarding company for a fraction of the cost -duties and tariffs included.

In other news... I just learned yesterday that Skullcandy recently acquired Astro Gaming for $10.8M. I hope that doesn't affect Astro for the worse.

for him to use the razers or the steelseries he will still need the dss or mixamp for voice chat cause they are pc headsets

for 95$ just get the sonys, but if you play on wifi you might have a problem with interference...only if you have a lot of 2.4ghz in the room you play...but if you live in a apt complex then pass

^ Oh. That's right. I didn't mention they both needed the MixAmp or the DSS. My bad. Same goes with the rest of the headsets that you mentioned.

Yeah. Most routers run on 2.4GHz. Then you have the cordless phone, the PS3 controllers, etc. Even the Turtle Beach PX5s have taken some flak for running at 2.4GHz. The wireless MixAmp 5.8 runs on 5.8 GHz. The only other wireless headset that I know of that runs on 5.8GHz are upcoming Tritton Warheads (which are XBOX360 exclusive).

How about the PX21s? Compatible with the PS3 out of the box. They are decent if they are working. And they're widely available -at least it's easier to get them replaced if they screw up if you're in the US. *shrugs*

just got a PS3... took advantage of the price drop.  Anyone here played or recommend that DC online game?  Looks pretty sick, but is paying a monthly subscription worth it?

Platinum'd Transformers.
Could have been a great game, but the control is a little shaky. Online was pretty fun.

Taking it back to get one more game before the deal ends. One week with Hunted: Demon's Forge and hopefully Two Worlds 2.
